Colombia builds houses with blocks made of discarded plastics
Colombian architect Oscar Mendez is building a house with blocks and cuboids made of discarded plastics. (Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO Concepts Plastics. "We are creating economic value from plastics that have no market. They are contaminated plastics, but now with a market after being recycled." The idea came from musician Fernando Llanos and was later adopted by architect Oscar Mendez, who through several years of research managed to develop bricks from processing all types of used plastics. (Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO of Concept Plastics "This is an initiative of triple impacts: economic impact, environmental impact and social impact." Now the invention has started to benefit thousands of homeless, who are having their own housed built mainly in suburbs with the special chunks. (Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO of Concept Plastics "The housing deficit in Latin America is tremendous. 40% percent of people in Africa, Asia and Latin America do not own a home. One in seven people in the world lives in extreme poverty. Then we want to improve this situation by offering houses." With wide use of the new building components, Colombia also expects to downsize contamination caused by thrown-away plastics. (Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO of Concept Plastics "On the environmental side, only in Bogota 6,300 tons of waste is thrown into the landfill is (each year), of which approximately 12%, or 750 tons, are plastics. Only 100 tons are recycled. We are recycling more of them to build hundreds of houses (for displace people)."

Expanded Panama Canal opens with Chinese ship making first passage
COSCO Shipping Panama, a vessel belonging to China COSCO Shipping Corporation, sails down the expanded Panama Canal in the morning of June 26, becoming the first ship to mark its official opening. (Soundbite) Jorge Luis Quijano, Administrator of Panama Canal Authority "The Panama Canal 102 years ago hit two oceans. Now we connect the present and the future. It is an honor to announce what we did together: expanded the canal. Thank you." The Chinese container vessel opens a chapter in the global shipping history by marking the conclusion of the nine-year expansion project of the canal. (Soundbite) Xu Lirong, Chairman of China COSCO Shipping Corporation “The new set of locks shortens the traffic time and downsizes the cost. It is very competitive. I believe it will boost China’s overseas trade.” The expansion of the Panama Canal will bring the traffic through the inter-oceanic passage to a new level, which already handles around 6 percent of global trade transportation. (Soundbite) Juan Carlos Varela, President of Panama "I would ask all the present to look up to the only flag that must always sway over this channel, which is the flag of Panama. With pride, God bless Columbus! May God bless the people of Panama! Thank you very much.” With the expansion of the canal's width and depth, the traffic volume will get tripled, further boosting the 1 billion U.S. dollars that the Panamanian government collects each year from its operation.

Sanctuary takes care of 800 stray dogs for adoption in deep mountains of Costa Rica
In the mountains of Santa Barbara de Heredia and Carrizal de Alajuela in Costa Rica, there is a large shelter for abandoned dogs now living in freedom with relative comfort. (Soundbite) MARCELA CASTRO, Territory Worker "Over the years we have neutered, collected and castrated thousands of stray dogs. If we do the math, billions of dogs are less on the street. We try to give a home to the dogs that had no chance of finding a family." The sanctuary to over 800 dogs is known as "Territory of Zaguates," over hills and grassy slopes. (Soundbite) LYA BATTLE, Territory Founder "I started with a dog that is still here called Bear, with whom I opened my eyes and I said, a cute dog, a good dog, a dog deserving a home." Supported by volunteers, all the dogs are sterilized, vaccinated and de-wormed, so they can live happily on the 1,000 square meters of territory, roaming free while receiving proper care. (Soundbite) BRIAN ALVAREZ, Territory Worker "Here we take care of the animals. They do not fight, do not get sick, and they really have freedom to walk, and zero bad actions against animals." Each dog has its own name, as the 8-year-long shelter bases its logic on unique personality. (Soundbite) EMMA RAMIREZ, U.S. Visitor "I came because I love dogs and want to come and see them. They are absolutely charming. It is very funny walk and all these dogs are adorable and great." The shelter prohibits any sacrifice and a dog can live here until an adoption is arranged. (Soundbite) KELLY O'FARREL, U.S. Visitor "I think they do a very good job with dogs. You see they are going very well, have a lot of freedom here and everything that a dog would want." If a person wants to adopt any of them, he has to book an appointment and take a long walk down the mountain with the dogs. (Soundbite) LYA BATTLE, Territory Founder "Somehow we made it. Veterinarians help us establish credit. Some people help us and give us time, and so we go out of inches, and we live a very simple life to give something to them." Magic attachment occurs during the walk, which assures an adoption forthcoming with love.
