Colombia builds houses with blocks made of discarded plastics

01:37
Colombian architect Oscar Mendez is building a house with blocks and cuboids made of discarded plastics. (Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO Concepts Plastics. "We are creating economic value from plastics that have no market. They are contaminated plastics, but now with a market after being recycled." The idea came from musician Fernando Llanos and was later adopted by architect Oscar Mendez, who through several years of research managed to develop bricks from processing all types of used plastics. (Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO of Concept Plastics "This is an initiative of triple impacts: economic impact, environmental impact and social impact." Now the invention has started to benefit thousands of homeless, who are having their own housed built mainly in suburbs with the special chunks. (Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO of Concept Plastics "The housing deficit in Latin America is tremendous. 40% percent of people in Africa, Asia and Latin America do not own a home. One in seven people in the world lives in extreme poverty. Then we want to improve this situation by offering houses." With wide use of the new building components, Colombia also expects to downsize contamination caused by thrown-away plastics. (Soundbite) Oscar Mendez, CEO of Concept Plastics "On the environmental side, only in Bogota 6,300 tons of waste is thrown into the landfill is (each year), of which approximately 12%, or 750 tons, are plastics. Only 100 tons are recycled. We are recycling more of them to build hundreds of houses (for displace people)."

600 years of Chinese bloodline in Kenya

02:09
According to legends,a team of Chinese sailors survived a shipwreck in the Indian Ocean waters and settled in Lamu Island. Historians contend the sailors were part of a fleet sent by the legendary Chinese navigator Zheng He. Six centuries later, the descendants of these Chinese sailors are visible in Lamu where China's ancient Maritime Silk road terminates. In Siyu village, archeologists have discovered artifacts like porcelain and coins that were symbols of the Ming dynasty. Mwamaka and her family are among the ones who are living testimony of the earliest contacts between Kenya and China. It was in 2002 that a team of distinguished Kenyan and Chinese researchers carried a DNA analysis on Mwamaka's 63-year-old mother and discovered that she has Chinese genetics. Soon afterwards, the Chinese government offered Mwamaka a scholarship to study Chinese traditional medicine in China. Kenyan and Chinese archeologists have been tracing evidence of ancient contacts in the Kenyan coast .They hope to find the the shipwreck to help unearth all artifacts symbolizing ancient cultural and trade ties.

(Soundbite) Xu Lirong, Chairman of China COSCO Shipping Corporation “The new set of locks shortens the traffic time and downsizes the cost. It is very competitive. (Soundbite) Juan Carlos Varela, President of Panama "I would ask all the present to look up to the only flag that must always sway over this channel, which is the flag of Panama. With pride, God bless Columbus! May God bless the people of Panama! Kenyan man uses invasive plant water hyacinth for paper production

01:29
Water hyacinth, a fast-growing floating plant, has long been a headache for fishermen and locals near Lake Victoria in Western Kenya. But now, 31-year-old Evince Oloo is making efforts to use the problematic species for recycle production. Oloo mixes water hyacinth with waste paper to produce paper products and liquid soap. The procedure is simple but a finicky job. First, he chops the fibers into smaller pieces and then mashed into a thick pulp. The pulp is later mixed with waste paper, which have been soaked for two to three days and mashed. The mixture is then poured into a big metallic trough filled with water after which it is sieved to form soft wet paper on top of a plastic or woody sieve. The wet paper takes 30-40 minutes to dry, then the refined product is cut into different sizes. Oloo makes folders, gift bags, A4-size papers for printing, photo frames and other woven products, which he exhibits at the local markets. But now, despite the growing market demand, Oloo can only produce such productions on a very small scale. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) EVINCE OLOO, Kenyan entrepreneur "We are happy and we will try and recycle this things and make environment habitable. We hope to grow the business if we get sponsors to help us expand our business."
