This video documents the process that went into applying the Air India livery/gloss to the model 777 I'm constructing. The actual painting process took over a month, and there's a lot that isn't shown in this video, simply because there wasn't enough time (in the song). You might ask why I even bothered to "paint" on the livery, given how subtle it is—I didn't want to ruin the manila folder look with actual paint, so clear gloss seemed like a better option. It's hard to see under normal light, but at the right angles it's definitely visible. Andrew Kuo's diagrammatic paintings are dissections of his likes, loves, and anxieties. Occupying the space between graph and color field painting, Kuo's paintings fuse the objectivity of information, with the subjectivity of personal experience into "abstract" geometric images. Kuo is also well-known for his New York Times music infographics, which charts the artist's experience of live music and newly released tracks. Andrew talks with Alia in his New York studio about his painting process, color theory, instagram, sports, The Simpsons, and beauty. When multiple currents of creativity move in the same direction, their meeting point becomes a nexus from which something greater flows. For some time now two such currents have been gathering in Jonas' artistic headwaters: the urge to create very large paintings and the desire to further explore flow painting. Large canvases are where Jonas' creative spirit soars best. Reminiscent of his early days as a dancer, his abstract, gestural style is in peak form when his brush has plenty of space to roam, not confined by the canvas' edge. The other creative current propelling him has been a call to return to the flow painting techniques he first explored in his 2011 FLUID POETRY show. Working with fluid acrylics takes him deeper than ever into his philosophy of "letting go". Forgoing expectations and control, he allows the colors to find their own paths, and the art that emerges is imbued with that spirit of flowing freedom. With this show we celebrated the CONFLUENCE of these two powerful currents. When flow painting meets large canvases, the spirit of freedom is given the space to be free. This liberty has re-energized and refined Jonas' work in all sizes. Small and mid-sized works are displayed alongside the larger paintings whose creation was their inspiration. For more than 30 years, Wyoming artist Neltje (American, b. 1934) has explored a variety of materials and media to visually express her life and experiences. Her earliest paintings incorporated found objects, she explored composition through collage and assemblage, and she learned the creative expression of line through sumi-e ink drawing. All of her research in these media, combined with her literary writing and her strong emotions, has been the underpinning of her primary mode of expression: painting. Neltje. Painting. 1990 -- 2012. is the first exhibition to explore the evolution of her work in this media. Subjects have evolved from landscape to figurative to abstract expressionism. Palettes have progressed from dark and somber to bright and clear. The scale of her paintings has always been large but her most recent Moroccan Suite establishes a new dimension to her large-scale work: 10 x 30 ft. Funded in part by FMC Corporation, Rocky Mountain Power, Wyoming Public Media, UW Art Museum Gala Funds, and the Wyoming Arts Council through the Wyoming State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
