Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes, and the Cult of Silicon Valley

Elizabeth Holmes became a Silicon Valley celebrity after she dropped out of Stanford at 19 to start a company called Theranos. We sat down with John Carreyrou, the Wall Street Journal reporter who unmasked Holmes. Established in 2003, Theranos promised to save people from pain and disease through early detection and lead the way into an era of cheaper, more consumer-driven health care. Holmes' big idea was to replace traditional venous blood draws in a doctor's office, hospital, or lab with simple finger pricks. One day, she said, patients would be able to do the tests at home and upload the results for their doctors. Holmes stacked her board of directors with heavyweights such as former and future cabinet members George Schultz, Henry Kissinger, and Gen. James Mattis. She held fundraisers for Hillary Clinton and cadged hundreds of millions of dollars from investors such as the Walmart heirs, Rupert Murdoch, and Betsy DeVos. For a time, her company was worth more than Spotify or Uber. Today, Theranos is on the verge of liquidation and its backers have seen their investments wiped out. Holmes may face charges. The man who looked closer at Theranos is John Carreyrou, a veteran investigative journalist at The Wall Street Journal. His dogged reporting revealed the tactics of flattery and intimidation that fooled Holmes' investors and the press, allowing her to keep up the deception for as long as she did. When Carreyrou's stories on Theranos started appearing in 2015, Holmes went on the offensive, depicting herself as a Silicon Valley disrupter who had become the target of a smear campaign orchestrated by established interests. Reason's Nick Gillespie sat down with Carreyrou to talk about his new book on Theranos, Bad Blood: Secrecy and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, which has made the New York Times bestseller list and will soon be made into a movie starring Jennifer Lawrence as Elizabeth Holmes. Bad Blood raises tough questions about regulators' failure to stop Theranos, the infatuation of the public and the press with the mystique of Silicon Valley, and the shadowlands where innovation, capitalism, and deception meet. Reason's Katherine Mangu-Ward on the Future of the Magazine

48:11
Reason's new editor in chief Katherine Mangu-Ward sat down with former Reason editor and author Virginia Postrel (now a columnist at Bloomberg View) at Reason's Los Angeles headquarters to talk about the future of the magazine as it nears its 50th anniversary. "Nick Gillespie—and to some extent Matt Welch—their version of Reason was sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. Mine is more like sex, drugs, and robots," says Mangu-Ward. You may know Mangu-Ward's work already as Reason's managing editor or from her insightful cover stories covering everything from defending plastic bags to why your vote doesn't count. Approximately 48 minutes. Edited by Paul Detrick. Camera by Zach Weissmuller, Alexis Garcia and Alex Manning.

Why You Don't Need To Vote

03:56
Perhaps there are more meaningful ways to spend your time. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. ---------------- If you want to alienate almost anyone, no matter their politics, tell them you're not voting tomorrow. Your friends will gasp. Celebrities will judge you. Your mother might still love you—grudgingly. The very concept of democracy depends on it, they'll say. And don't you care about America? Don't accept the guilt trip. Not voting can be an equally legitimate and moral choice. Here are four of the most common myths used to shame nonvoters. 'Your Vote Matters' As Reason's Katherine Mangu-Ward has often pointed out, you're not going to sway a major election. Your chances are vanishingly small of affecting a race at the state level, and a single vote has decided precisely zero federal elections in more than a century. A comprehensive review by economists Casey Mulligan and Charles Hunter looking at tens of thousands of races since 1898 unearthed just a single federal race that hinged on one vote—but a recount revealed the final difference to be much larger. Voting is like playing the Powerball. Punch your ticket or don't, and your life will stay exactly the same. Yes, if a million other people think the same way, then the result could shift. But this is about you, and whether or not you cast your one vote. It simply won't affect the outcome. Not if you live in a swing state. Not if the Electoral College were abolished. Not even if you're in Florida and your chad is hung like a moose. 'If You Don't Vote, You Have No Right To Complain' Only about half the voting age population makes it to the polls, and groups including young people, the poor, and the disabled are underrepresented in voter rolls. Do they not deserve a voice? The act of voting doesn't a good citizen make, and it's actually one of the least effective ways to contribute to the American experiment. Most social and cultural change happens outside the political sphere, and that's a good thing. Rather than follow the latest horse race, you could tweet, blog, buy, donate, or activate. You might spend your scarce time exposing corruption, developing a new vaccine, or microwaving a burrito. Any of these things can have a more tangible impact on the world than your vote. 'It's Your Civic Duty to Vote' Generations of brave Americans have fought for your right to vote—and for your right not to. In fact, you can choose not to vote because you love your country. Maybe you don't feel educated, or at least not enough to fill out your ballot and cancel out the vote of your well-informed neighbor. That's OK, and really quite moral. Besides, even the most knowledgeable voters can't predict what a candidate will do in office. Remember when Obama was going to rein in W's foreign adventuring? It was about 10 years and one drone kill list ago. 'If You Don't Vote, You're Just Lazy' A principled citizen might actively avoid a two-party system that systemically silences alternative voices. You could decide that, by design, it doesn't represent your interests, and that voting for the lesser of two evils only helps the fat cats in Washington maintain a smoke screen of legitimacy. In that case, go ahead and wash your hands of the whole rotten mess. At the end of the day, you might want to vote. Maybe to give your granddaughter an upclose look at the machinery of American government. Maybe to get that fashionable "I Voted" sticker-selfie that proves to your Insta friends how woke or un-cucked you are. Maybe you just really like middle school gyms. So this Tuesday, go ahead and rock the vote—if it makes you happy. But if you decide that it's a symbolic act that's unlikely to tangibly help your family or community, it's OK to spend your time and resources doing something more impactful. This Tuesday, you don't need to vote. Produced by Justin Monticello. Shot by Paul Detrick. REASON MAGAZINE PART 1

08:57
Reason is a libertarian monthly magazine from the Reason Foundation. Reason was founded in 1968 by Lanny Friedlander as a more-or-less monthly mimeographed publication. In 1970 it was purchased by Robert W. Poole, Manuel S. Klausner, and Tibor R. Machan, who set it on a more regular publishing schedule. As the monthly print magazine of "free minds and free markets", it covers politics, culture, and ideas with a mix of news, analysis, commentary, and reviews. Matt Welch has been the magazine's editor-in-chief since 2008. Other Reason writers include Jacob Sullum, Jesse Walker, Brian Doherty, Ronald Bailey, Radley Balko, Tim Cavanaugh, Kerry Howley, David Weigel, Katherine Mangu-Ward, Michael C. Moynihan, Damon Root, Greg Beato, Cathy Young, Jonathan Rauch, and cartoonist Peter Bagge. Former editors include Nick Gillespie, Marty Zupan, and Virginia Postrel. Erik Spiekermann, the inventor of the typeface Meta, headed a redesign of Reason in 2001, aiming for a look that is "cleaner, more modern, making use of the Meta typeface throughout". In June 2004, subscribers to Reason magazine received a personalized issue that had their name, and a satellite photo of their home or workplace on the cover. The magazine has a circulation of around 60,000 and has twice been named one of the "50 best magazines" by the Chicago Tribune.[1] In 2008, Reason's web site, reason.com, was named a Webby Award Honoree in the magazine category.[2] [edit]

Do College Students Hate Free Speech? Let's Ask Them.

08:13
The faculty council at Occidental College is considering instituting a system for students to report microaggressions perpetrated against them by faculty members or other students. Reason TV visited Occidental's campus to find out what exactly constitutes a microaggression. One Columbia psychology professor defined the term this way: Microaggressions are the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership. After exploring the limitations of a microaggression reporting system, we discussed broader free speech issues with the students in the wake of a month of campus protests that resulted in the resignations of several faculty members and a university president. Most of the students defended free speech in principle, if not always in practice. This is consistent with a recent Pew Research Center survey, which found that although 95 percent of Americans agree that people should be allowed to publicly criticize government policies, support erodes when the question turns to offensive speech. While a majority of millennials still believe that the government should protect speech offensive to minorities, a whopping 40 percent believe the government should restric such speech. "If you say 'You're less of a person because you're Muslim/Jewish/Christian/Catholic... that's not okay. That's a hate crime," one student told us. Another student argued that the government should curtail the speech of Donald Trump, while a protest organizer told us that free speech is a rhetorical device used by the priveleged against the oppressed. The Power of the Prosecutor: A Reason Discussion

"We just have 30,000 of them instead of 17,000 even though the crime rate is roughly the same as it was in 1974. They've got to do something. They can't just play minesweeper all day and keep their jobs." On May 25th, 2017, at Reason's Washington, D.C. office, Reason hosted a panel discussion with Pfaff and Ken White, former assistant United States attorney and co-founder of the blog Popehat. Moderated by Lauren Krisai, director of Criminal Justice Reform at the Reason Foundation, the discussion touched on the power of prosecutors in the criminal justice system, how prosecutors have served as barriers to meaningful criminal justice reform, and whether an influx of forward-looking district attorneys could change the status quo. Two Reasons Why We're Still Single

We'd love to hear a bit more about what you want from The School of Life. It would help us so much if you could take our survey now: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/theschooloflife-youtube There are two big reasons why many of us remain single far longer than we might like: we love ourselves far too little. These may be solid enough reasons, but when the problems persist over an extended period, their power to explain our situation weakens. Without anything remotely persecutory or unkind being intended by this, one is forced to cast around for psychological rather than procedural explanations. The problem must lie in our minds rather than in the world.” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/iKTxNh MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Visit us in person at our London HQ: https://goo.gl/pWmR4L Watch more films on RELATIONSHIPS in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLrelationships You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://goo.gl/h1prA5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: David Crisp https://vimeo.com/mistercrisp #TheSchoolOfLife

Reason Foundation Co-Founder Manny Klausner on Ayn Rand

06:03
Manuel "Manny" Klausner was one of the founding partners in Reason Enterprises, which began publishing Reason magazine in 1971, three years after the publication's creation. After serving in a variety of positions with the magazine, including editor, in 1978 he co-founded the Reason Foundation with Tibor Machan and Bob Poole. He remains on the board of the Reason Foundation today, is a stalwart supporter of the Federalist Society, and practices law in Los Angeles. "Rand is, I think, a very valuable resource in the movement for people who take liberty seriously," says Klausner. "When I was editor of Reason in the early 1970s, we got an article that was submitted that proposed a method for converting the world to libertarianism, and that was by going door-to-door and distributing to every household a copy of Atlas Shrugged. We rejected the article...but it was an example of the kind of impact Rand has had and continues to have on many many people." Approximately six minutes. Interview by David Nott, camera by Alex Manning, and editing by Hawk Jensen. This interview is part of the Reason.tv series Radicals For Capitalism: Celebrating the Ideas of Ayn Rand. In the latest Mostly Weekly Andrew Heaton covers some of the many reasons why Roy Moore sucks: •He taught a class discouraging women from running for office. •He's referred to people as "reds and yellows". •He thinks the accusations of pedophilia are pushed by homosexuals and socialists. •Accepted money from a Neo-nazi group. •Said gay marriage was worse than slavery. •Wouldn't rule out death penalty for gays. •Wants to rescind free trade agreements. •He's anti-immigrant. •Believes Barack Obama wasn't born in America. •Believes 9/11 is God's punishment for legalizing sodomy and abortion. How the Feds' Subpoena of Reason and Gag Order Went Public

10:04
You may have already heard about how the government tried to stifle Reason's free speech. Federal prosecutors based in New York sent a grand jury subpoena and letter to Reason, commanding editors to hand over the records of six commenters who wrote hyperbolic statements about federal judge Katherine Forrest below a blog post at Reason.com. Forrest sentenced Ross Ulbricht to life in prison without parole for creating the Silk Road website. Then came a gag order from U.S. District Court, meaning Reason could not write or speak publicly about the subpoena or gag order—even to acknowledge either existed. But between the subpoena being issued and the gag order being issued, one legal blogger managed to figure out what was going on. "I got an email and I looked at it and I thought wow, this is a federal grand jury subpoena to Reason magazine," says Ken White, a writer at the legal blog Popehat who is himself a former federal prosecutor. White sat down with Reason TV to talk about how he broke the story and what he thinks it means for press freedom and open expression online. "What's upsetting is that there is no indication whatsoever either that the prosecutor or the judge gave any consideration to the fact that this was being aimed at a reporting organization about a First Amendment issue," says White. What's more, White stresses that the comments named in the subpoena are commonplace for the internet and especially at Reason.com, a site, he notes, "whose clever writing is eclipsed only by the blowhard stupidity of its commenting peanut gallery." The scrutinized comments ranged from taunts such as "I hope there is a special place in hell reserved for that horrible woman" to "Its (sic) judges like these that should be taken out back and shot," but none, say White, come close to qualifying as "true" threats or anything other idle chatter. It remains unclear why the U.S. Attorney's Office was interested in such internet fodder, how often these sorts of subpoenas get sent out to news organizations, and how often they comply. Nevertheless, White points out that federal prosecutors hold an enormous amount of power over human lives and rarely reflect on how they use—and abuse—their position. "A fish doesn't know that it's in water," says White. "A federal prosecutor doesn't know that they are swimming in power. They could do it, so they did." Produced by Paul Detrick. Shot by Zach Weissmueller and Justin Monticello. Approximately 10:03. Music is "VibeDrive" by Podington Bear, "Atlantis" by Audionautix, "How to Soothe a Digital Watch" by Ergo Phizmiz, and Unerklärliche (oder unidentifizierbare) Spiele im Kornfeld" by deef. Sex, Lies, Jazz: Feb. Reason Preview w Matt Welch and Kennedy

03:02
Reason TV's Kennedy sits down with Matt Welch to find out what's in the new edition of the nation's only magazine of "Free Minds and Free Markets." The February 2013 issue is on newsstands now (go here to subscribe now for just $14.97 a year). Welch's cover story, "The 'Truth' Hurts," takes aim at ideologically motivated "fact-checking" by supposedly objective journalists. In the "War on Sex Workers," Melissa Gira Grant exposes an unholy alliance of feminists, cops, and conservatives hell-bent on stopping prostitution. "Show Me Your License, Daddy-O," by Chris Kjorness, recalls a time in New York City when jazz greats such as Charlie Parker and hip comics such as Lenny Bruce were barred from performing in Gotham's clubs. A year's subscription to the print edition of Reason costs $14.97 (the discount grows with multi-year subscriptions). Subscribers get the mag weeks before any of the material shows up online. About 3 minutes long. Produced by Todd Krainin. Camera by Krainin and Amanda Winkler. San Francisco's Last Gun Shop is Closing. The Reason is Appalling.

02:56
Over the weekend, San Francisco will lose its last gun store: High Bridge Arms. Why? The city has mandated that gun shops hand over information about its customers to the cops. "Just the idea of giving that information willingly to the police department, for no real reason, seemed very unreasonable to me." says Steven Alcairo, the general manager of High Bridge Arms. Alcairo notes that the store already complies with all federal and state reporting requirements. Mark Farrell, a member of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, was behind the local ordinance. The ordinance places new requirements on gun shops like High Bridge Arms, such as videotaping everything that happens in their stores and providing the San Francisco Police Department with weekly updates on customers and purchases. "I would never introduce legislation to hurt a small business in our city," Farrell told the local NBC affiliate. "However, if a gun store in particular wants to close as a result of it, so be it." High Bridge Arms' website says the shop was opened in 1952 by the renowned Olympic shooter Bob Chow. It was later bought by Andy Takahashi in the late 1980s. It was Takahashi who made the decision to close the doors. "You know, I think I would like it if San Franciscans would just kinda take a look at this," says Alcario. "We decriminalized medical marijuana, we pioneered equal rights. But in the same town you’re gearing laws specifically to make it hard on me," About 3 minutes. Produced by Alex Manning. Filmed by Paul Detrick. Music by Podington Bear. Reason on gun control. Go to http://reason.com/reasontv for downloadable versions of this video. 13 Reasons Jeff Sessions is a @$#/!

03:12
Jeff Sessions is on the ropes with Donald Trump. Good. The president is pissed because Sessions recused himself from the investigation of Russian attempts to influence the 2016 election. But here are a baker's dozen of reasons to hate the attorney general, including his obsession with restarting the war on pot, his call to jack up mandatory minimums, and his support for civil asset forfeiture. Then there's his lack of interest in due process, willingness to subvert state's rights when they conflict with his desired outcome, and desire to lengthen prison terms for non-violent criminals. Also, he might be some kind of statist elf. ----- Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/reasontv Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Reason.Magazine/ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/reason Subscribe to our podcast at iTunes: https://goo.gl/az3a7a Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. ----- During Sessions' confirmation hearings, Democrats claimed the former Alabama senator was unfit for office because he was a racist, charges that were never really substantiated. But Sessions' voting record and policy agenda are more than enough to disqualify him from being the nation's top law enforcement officer. Mostly Weekly is hosted by Andrew Heaton and written by Sarah Rose Siskind. Watch past episodes here. Edited by Austin Bragg and Sarah Rose Siskind. Produced by Meredith and Austin Bragg. Reason Foundation Co-Founder Bob Poole on Ayn Rand

05:40
Robert W. Poole Jr. was one of the founders of Reason Enterprises, which began publishing Reason with its January 1971 issue (the magazine had started in 1968, under the direction of Lanny Friedlander). He co-founded the nonprofit Reason Foundation in 1978 with Manny Klausner and Tibor Machan and has held many titles with the magazine, including editor, managing editor, executive editor, editor-in-chief, and publisher. He remains on the board of the Reason Foundation today and is the Searle Freedom Trust Transportation Fellow and Director of Transportation Policy. "Rand really inspired a lot of people who otherwise might have become conservatives, like me," says Poole. "If you go back and look at surveys that were done of libertarians in the 1960s, '70s, and even the '80s, and asked what single book or thought leader most inspired you to become a libertarian, it was always Rand by a large large majority—always a plurality and usually a majority." Approximately six minutes. Interview by Michael C. Moynihan, camera by Dan Hayes, and editing by Hawk Jensen. This is part of the Reason.tv series Radicals For Capitalism: Celebrating the Ideas of Ayn Rand. But I was assassinated by your naivete. Cold fingers touched my heart. Then our family turned into a tragedy. Do you think, you’re the winner of this match? Oh god, why do you permit such a treason. I trusted you till the edge. Tell me a reason? You don’t have to justify! You’re not in the right. It was like: When you murdered a civilian for a bitch. Is she worth it? Is she worth it? Cross your s*x drive and build a bridge! Stupid bitch! She’s not worth it! She’s not worth it! I can’t look in your eyes any longer. You give me an urge to gag. You’re nothing but a sponger. You’re just a leaf … in the wind. The blindness is your overlord. My tears are frozen. Your cold breath is a sword. It’s killing me a dozen times. You don’t have to justify! You’re not in the right. It was like: When you murdered a civilian for a bitch. Is she worth it? Is she worth it? Cross your s*x drive and build a bridge! Stupid bitch! She’s not worth it! She’s not worth it! Bros before hoes Bros before hoes Bros before hoes But if the way is the only destination, Then I am ready to forgive. I hope you see this song as a reflection. And then change the way you live. For a bitch. Is she worth it? Is she worth it? Cross your s*x drive and build a bridge! Stupid bitch! She’s not worth it! She’s not worth it! When you murdered a civilian for a bitch.
