Radio copywriting expert Dan O'Day explains. Here's an important radio advertising lesson for you: Commercials should not focus on "features." Nor, contrary to what you've learned elsewhere, should your ads focus on "benefits." Instead, radio copywriters should concentrate on selling the RESULTS of the product or service being advertised. Consumers don't want the product. They don't care about the product. They care only about what the product can do for them. I don't care if Ed's Toothpaste has been judged the World's Greatest Toothpaste. I want to know if it can keep my teeth cavity-free, my smile gleaming white, and my breath fresh and inviting. Let me illustrate with a real-life example. Right around the turn of this century, my office manager began nagging me to get TiVo. This was before most cable television providers offered their own DVR (Digital Video Recorder) options. TiVo pioneered that product category. It also was in the days when people used video cassette recorders (VCRs). My office manager nagged me for a year and a half. She had TiVo, and now she was trying to convert me. "You really should have TiVo, Dan." "Why?" "Well, it lets you record any program." "Um," I ventured, "did you ever hear of a VCR?" "Well, yeah, but you see, you can record a program and you can watch it whenever you want." I said, "Yeah, see, I can actually take any videocassette I want and play it whenever I want." "Dan, you don't understand. It changes your entire television viewing experience." That was the problem. Nobody wants to have their television viewing experience changed. Did you wake up this morning thinking, "Gosh, if only I could find a product or service that would change my television viewing experience?" Eighteen months after my office manager began her Make Dan Get TiVo campaign, I had lunch with a friend of mine. He had just gotten TiVo. I said, "Really? So what do you think?" "Dan, it completely changed my television viewing experience." I wanted to scream. "What do you mean?" He said, "I don't channel surf anymore." I said, "Gee, I thought you were a busy guy. You're telling me that you frequently spend time at the edge of the sofa with a remote control, looking for something to watch?" "No," he said. "That's not what I mean. What I mean is with Tivo, whenever I turn on my television, there is always something I want to watch." That was the day I decided to become a TiVo customer. So, the product or service for which you're about to write a radio commercial: What are the results the consumer will enjoy by purchasing that product or service? The answer to that question will tell you what your radio copywriting efforts should be able about.

Has a unique selling proposition​ ​Often, the​ advertiser need to ​have​ a unique selling proposition (USP)​. This unique selling proposition makes the product or service stand out of the crowd. Advertising attempts to persuade and influence the audience through the different kinds of appeal. 3.) Consumer oriented Advertising broadens the knowledge of the consumers. With this nature of advertising, consumers can have the know how of the products, brands or services ​that ​exist in the market. In fact, every product or service is designed in a way to keep the consumers satisfied. 4.) Uses various media ​Apart from print platforms like newspapers and magazines, its presence can now also be seen in audiovisual platforms like, films, hoardings, banners and many such promotional campaigns. 5.) Paid Form Advertising requires the advertiser (also called sponsor) to pay to create an advertising message, to buy advertising media slot, and to monitor advertising efforts. Benefits 1.) Launch of a new product: Advertising plays very significant role in the introduction of a new product in the market. It stimulates the people to buy or know about a product. 2.) Increases markets: It helps the manufacturers to expand their markets. It opens the horizons for new markets for the product or service. 3.) Mass sales: Advertising facilitates mass production to goods that ultimately results in a raised volume of sales. Role and importance 1.) Spreading Awareness Advertisements alert people about new products and services in the market that could potentially fulfill their needs or solve their problems. A typical advertisement will tell you what the service or product is, where it can be bought, for how much, by whom, and why it should be bought. 2.) Popularizing a Brand Think of all the popular brands you know, such as Coca-Cola or McDonald’s. These brands are where they are today because they utilized the phenomenon of advertising well. 3.) Increasing Demand The target audience of advertisements is typically large, whether you’re advertising in social media, print media, radio, or television. A well-crafted advertisement will convince the public that they should buy the product or subscribe to the service being advertised. 4.) Increased Profit Advertisements are usually displayed to large groups of people at the same time. This means that, even with a low conversion rate, many people will end up buying your products eventually. If you execute your advertisement well, you will get a good conversion rate and great sales. Increased sales, of course, mean increased profits.

Meaning DAGMAR stands for Defining Advertising Goals for Measured Advertising Results. DAGMAR Model was developed by Russell Colley in 1961 for setting advertising objectives and measuring advertising results. According to DAGMAR Model the ultimate objective of advertising involves a communication task, intended to create awareness, impart information, develop attitude and induce action. Awareness Awareness of the existence of a product or a service is needful before the purchase behaviour is expected. The fundamental task of advertising activity is to improve the consumer awareness of the product. Once the consumer awareness has been provided to the target audience, it should not be forsaken. The target audience tends to get distracted by other competing messages if they are ignored. Awareness has to be created, developed, refined and maintained according to the characteristics of the market and the scenario of the organization at any given point of time. The objective is to create awareness about the product amongst the target audience. 2.) Comprehension Awareness on its own is not sufficient to stimulate a purchase. Information and understanding about the product and the organisation are essential. This can be achieved by providing information about the brand features. Example: In an attempt to persuade people to budge for a new toothpaste brand, it may be necessary to compare the product with other toothpaste brands, and provide an additional usage benefit, such as more effective than other toothpaste because it contains salt or that this particular toothpaste is a vegetarian toothpaste, which will, in turn, attract more customers. The objective is to provide all the information about the product. 3.) Conviction Conviction is the next step where the customer evaluates different products and plans to buy the product. At this stage, a sense of conviction is established, and by creating interests and preferences, customers are convinced that a certain product should be tried at the next purchase. At this step, the job of the advertising activity is to mould the audience’s beliefs and persuade them to buy it. This is often achieved through messages that convey the superiority of the products over the others by flaunting the rewards or incentives for using the product. Example: Thumbs up featured the incentive of social acceptance as “grown up”. It implied that those who preferred other soft drinks were kids. The objective is to create a positive mental disposition to buy a product. 4.) ACTION This is the final step which involves the final purchase of the product or service. The objective is to motivate the customer to buy the product. In case of online when product is order by the customer.

This direct communication can be done face to face, sms, mailing, email, telephone, and other channels that allow the business to communicate with potential customers individually. Its history goes back to 1872 when Mr. Aaron Montgomery Ward, a Chicago based business man that made a fortune by selling products to rural customers through mail ordering. The big advantage of direct marketing is that it can be personalized and its results can be measured. In order to create successful direct and personalized marketing campaigns you need to have, create, or buy a good potential customers database. The better and more detailed information about your potential customers your database has, the better results you will achieve in your direct marketing campaign. Ex: If your campaign is to attract runners to participate in the race you are organizing, and if you will have a full marathon, half marathon, and 10 kilometer races possibilities for the participants, it was great if your customers database had data on which ones of the potential customers usually participates in a full marathon, which usually goes for the half, and what prefer a not so longer race and opt by the 10 kilometer option. This way you could segment your direct marketing campaign into three different campaigns: one targeting the 10 kilometer, other the half marathon, and the last one targeting the people that most probably will opt for the full marathon. So after you have contacted your potential customers, the next thing you need to do it is to measure its response rate. The response rate is the percentage of people who actually took action and followed your suggestion to buy, participate, visit, or whatever was your main goal for creating the direct marketing campaign. At the previous run race example if you have contacted 1,000 people to participate on the marathon race and 100 of them actually registered, you would get a 10% response rate. If your brand is not strong yet, direct marketing is a great way to get results/ sales. As you contact the potential customers directly you have the opportunity to explain them your unique selling proposition and why they should choose your products. This will not happen if you use other marketing channels, as you will not have the opportunity to go into detail about your product strengths, and because you may face similar products with a well know brand next to your ads.

From Thomas Sowell's book "Basic Economics": When the processed food industry first began in nineteenth century America, it was common for producers to adulterate food items with less expensive fillers. Horseradish, for example, was often sold in colored bottles, to conceal the adulteration. But when Henry J. Heinz began selling unadulterated horseradish in clear bottles,{ 281} this gave him a decisive advantage over his competitors, who fell by the wayside while the Heinz company went on to become one of the enduring giants of American industry, still in business in the twenty-first century and highly successful. When the H.J. Heinz company was sold in 2013, the price was $ 23 billion.{ Brands have not always existed. They came into existence and then survived and spread for a reason. In eighteenth century England, for example, only a few luxury goods, such as Chippendale furniture, were known by their manufacturer’s brand name. It was an innovation when Josiah Wedgwood put his name on chinaware that he sold and which ultimately became world famous for its quality and appearance.{ 949} In the United States, brand names began to flourish around the time of the Civil War. In nineteenth century America, most food processors did not put brand names on the food that they sold—a situation which allowed adulteration of food to flourish. As The Economist reported: "In the old Soviet Union, where all products were supposed to be the same, consumers learnt how to read barcodes as substitutes for brands in order to identify goods that came from reliable factories." In effect, Soviet consumers created brands de facto for their own benefit, where none existed, indicating that brands have value to consumers as well as producers. Narration --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The movie Host vs Advertising Host is actually more of a love story in a sci-fi setting than a serious sci-fi movie. That’s probably why they used a pre-packaged, out-of-the-box, one-size-fits-all futuristic we-have-solved-all-your-problems-cause-we’re-so-ancient-and-advanced, star-trek-esk perfect society, for the society the aliens establish on earth. Why do they need human bodies as hosts? Ehh whatever … That society lives in perfect harmony, has gotten rid of pesky things like money and therefore has no need for advertising. Paradise, right? No more billboards. No TV ads. So lets look at the economics of this. What is advertising? Advertising of course is an evil thing that big corporations do to force you to buy their products at a much higher price than they’re actually worth, by brainwashing you to think their product is somehow special. Consumers are completely defenseless and have no chance to resist it. Well, we of course are an exception ourselves because we’re smart and educated, but stupid people, namely the people who buy those products, are obviously helpless and incapable of resisting the brainwashing. Occasionally we buy those products too, but only well, if we had no other choice, because it was kinda convenient and we didn’t have time to go to the non-mainstream-eco-fair-trade-organic-no-brand-bring-your-own-shopping-tote-zero-carbon-footprint-locally-sourced-recycle-everything store, that doesn’t mean that we’re stupid or brainwashed, only those other people are who actually think those products are good. So in conclusion, advertising is pure evil … and a waste of resources. Let's be like that wise futuristic alien society … that needs human bodies as host. In this video, I explain why Amazon Affiliate Marketing is best for beginners, and how to get into the industry. The reason why I love this program so much is because it has much lower competition overall, and you don't have to "sell" people on things. Amazon's powerhouse strategy does all the lifting for you. I also reveal some tips you can use to increase your conversion rates with your affiliate websites. The main reason why I've always recommended Amazon as the go-to affiliate network for beginners is because of the vast array of new products that are introduced on a daily basis. Along with that, Amazon is a complete SELLING MACHINE! What I mean by that, is they have drilled their conversion rates down to the last detail. Typically I can convert traffic I send to Amazon from my affiliate sites around 12%. The reason why it works so well is that the moment people land on Amazon, they are automatically switched into "buyer mode". Meaning, they know the only thing left for them to do is BUY. What that means, is all you have to do is get people to Amazon's site, and they literally do the selling for you. Here are some tips for beginners trying to break into the Amazon Affiliate Partner Program. Tip 1: Pick a niche you are passionate about, and confirm other people are passionate about it. the best way to do this is to type the main keyword of your niche into Amazon's search box. If you see dozens and hundreds of products related to your niche (with lots of product reviews) it's typically a good niche to get into. Tip 2: Create a blog and create tons of content related to your niche. You don't (nor shouldnt) sell affiliate offers in every piece of content. Ideally, you want to aim for a content to promotion ration of 5:1. This is what Google is looking for. Always keep Google happy. Tip 3: Tap into social media by creating a YouTube channel, Facebook fan page, and more. Funnel your audience to a squeeze page, and then from their pitch your affiliate review pages. Tip 4: If you're a beginner, it's important that you realize it make take more than a few days before you start making sales. While it is possible to earn affiliate commissions with Amazon within a few days of creating a campaign, realistically you shouldn't expect to start making sales within the first 14-30 days. It takes time for your website to carve out a space on the internet. However, if you are determined and post 1 new blog post and 1 new video each day for your first 30 days, you hold a way higher chance of earning affiliate commissions within the first 30 days. Tip 5: Combine other offers from other affiliate networks with your Amazon promotions. You can make big money outside of Amazon as well. All in all, I believe that Amazon Affiliate Marketing is best for beginners to start with. It has so many different niches that you can tap into that competition isn't much of an issue even in 2017.
