Energy security : what's at stake? (NATO Review)

11:24
For the Baltic States, the pursuit of energy independence is about more than reliable energy sources – it’s about political freedom. In today’s security context, many dimensions of energy security have become increasingly important. Learn more in this mini-documentary. What is NATO Review? It’s a free, online magazine looking at some of today’s most pressing security issues. It publishes videos, articles, timelines, maps, podcasts, cartoons and more on everything from cyber attacks to the effect of social media in revolutions. Or from energy security to Russia’s hybrid war tactics. Or even from water scarcity to the need to get more women into defence. Most important is that what is published in NATO Review does not necessarily represent official opinion or policy of member governments, or of NATO. So the opinions you’ll hear in NATO Review may not be the ones you expect to hear. Or from people you’d expect to be invited to offer their opinions. It’s a magazine that has been doing this for over 60 years. And in that sense, despite it being a modern magazine, it still holds to the task given to it all those years ago - which is to 'contribute to a constructive discussion of Euro-Atlantic security issues'.

The Black Sea Region and Transatlantic Security

36:06
The Black Sea region serves as an important nexus between Europe and Central Asia. Yet myriad threats to stability in this region could have a significant impact on transatlantic security. In recent years, countries bordering the Black Sea have experienced incursions on their territorial integrity, significant inflows of migrants and refugees, and threats from terrorist groups and organized crime. What role can Romania, NATO, and the European Union be expected to play in ensuring security in this region in the coming years? How may potential flashpoints in this region have broader consequences for transatlantic security? What impact will domestic politics and protests in several countries in the area have on regional stability?

You can have and we have accepted since a long time the common market in the 60s, competition among European countries and European enterprises for new manufacturing products, televisions, electronic equipment, garment, whatever, what when you come down to energy, energy is something very important for the functioning of a country and so government policy is always super-imposing national view on what would be the general interest in economic terms. The European commission only two weeks ago published what is called the "green paper" setting out ideas on the future of an EU energy policy, and it is unrealistic to expect that to be agreed to so rapidly." 22. Glasses 23. SOUNDBITE: (English) Professor Iain Begg, London School of Economics: "France is well known as having a high proportion of its energy supplied by Nuclear, nearly three-quarters. In other countries, there is much greater scepticism about nuclear. So it will depend really on a country by country choice and I don't see any prospects for an EU wide solution on nuclear." FILE - Chelekan, Turkmenistan 24. Sun setting behind Soviet oil rig STORYLINE: Scepticism and hopes are rising ahead of the Thursday's EU summit in Brussels that will focus on energy policies, job creation, research and technology and international political issues. Crude oil and gas price increases, the recent Russian-Ukrainian gas crisis and the strained Middle East security situation have made energy a crucial issue in the European integration process. Carlo Andrea Bollino, the Chairman of GRTN (the Italian Electrical System Manager), said the long term future of Europe was the main concern, and said the continent must, "get self-consciousness of what is going to be the main problem of this century." A transport and energy meeting of the Council of European Union already welcomed the Commission's Green Paper, "A European Strategy for Sustainable, Competitive and Secure Energy", but there was much work to do on the way to the creation of a European electricity grid, new integrated gas pipelines and common emergency stock purchase. Sochi 2014: Security and Geopolitical Dimensions

01:28:47
In 2014, Russia will host the Winter Olympic Games at the well-known Black Sea resort destination of Sochi. The Games have symbolic importance for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who considers them a demonstration of post-Soviet Russia's potential and growing influence in the international arena. However, Sochi is also the center of several geopolitical and security challenges, including instability in the North Caucasus, the Georgian-Russian bilateral relationship, the status of ethnic Circassians in the region, and Russia's policy on the breakaway republic of Abkhazia. In his presentation, Sergey Markedonov, Visiting Fellow at the CSIS Russia and Eurasia Program, will explore the aforementioned issues and delve into the challenges posed by the Olympics to Russia and the Black Sea community. Dr. Markedonov will highlight a number of steps that may minimize risk for Russia (or, if implemented improperly, worsen the situation) and consider opportunities for international engagement relating to security. This video provides a general profile of the Black Sea under a fisheries and aquaculture perspective. It gives an overview of the characteristics of this peculiar marine basin and of the main challenges for successful examples of sustainable aquaculture in the Black Sea and highlights the potentialities of the sector, not only for food security but for social and economic aspects. In the region, aquaculture development is not homogenous and this is reflected in the diverse maturity stages of the industry. However, there are success cases that can be shared and tailored to various local requirements and conditions. The GFCM, through its Scientific Advisory Committee on Aquaculture and its Working Group on the Black Sea, contributes to the formulation of scientific and technical advice to enhance interactions between aquaculture and environment while ensuring animal health and welfare. Moreover, the Aquaculture Demonstrative Centres, a GFCM initiative, enable to coordinate activities and provide capacity-building, demonstrative interventions and technical assistance to countries in order to ensure that aquaculture is developed in a modern and sustainable way.
