Okay, there - we - go! Abyss Soul Lotus Trial is finally here! Oh my, it was probably the most awaited fangame this year~. After fixing a lot of bugs (I mean, A LOT of bugs), doing some balancing, it got its trial before year's end.
And it's really great, don't get me wrong, I am aware how difficult at the first glance it seems to be. Yet, survival-wise ASL is quite a bit harder than any standard Touhou game, due to the fact you need to plan carefully your route. If you manage to find optimal route it shouldn't be a problem anymore - clearing enemies, thus cancelling bullets, is the key.

About the game & mechanics:
First of all, let's talk about the plot. While translation is in progress, we can't say much about it. What is known is there occurs an incident in which Hakurei Border begins to fall apart. In order to prevent complete collapse, Hakurei Reimu with help of manipulating borders youkai, Yakumo Yukari, investigates the matter and resolve the incident.
In this trial we get Reimu and Yukari duo, for final release there is planned one or maybe two more pairs. Unfortunately, it's not going to have Marisa - she doesn't fit the plot. Other than that four difficulties, three stages for the trial, six planned + extra. Common thing.
About game's mechanics:
The most interesting thing in this game is a timer, counting down from 24:00:00 (one day, but actually it's 24 minutes of gameplay time). It's the time left before the Hakurei Barrier completely shatters. Due to barrier system the game may seems to be trivial. Yet, there's a thing. In order to clear the game, the counter cannot drop down to zero. Once it reaches zero, the game ends.
With each miss it reduces by one hour (one minute). So, you would better not die too much.
But, you can slow down shattering by collecting Border Fragments. Those shiny fragments are very crucial, and not only because they slow down timer. Read further.
What is surprising is the lack of bombs. Instead, you have barrier system (a.k.a. Border Protection). When it's at least 100%, you get a shield preventing you from losing a live.
Basically, upon hit barrier bar decreases by 100% and bullets near you get wiped out and grants you a brief invincibility frame. - Free hits, huh?
You can accumulate it up to 300%. Every time you get another 100% of border value you are granted one life piece. This also happens when you enter next stage.
When you have full bar, you can press X to do a Border Release. It consumes all Border Protection meter and triggers a Border Release, which is kind of MoF bomb. Bullets cancelled with Border Release increase Point Item Value (PIV).
After a Border Release, a Border Sustain begins. At this time, items will continue to be auto-collected. A sustain countdown will be shown near the character's head; the countdown will stop during dialogue and Spell Cards.
If a Spell Card is captured during Border Sustain, an amount of Border Protection will be awarded according to the amount of remaining time. In some cases, it can lead to refilling a border bar instantly from near zero to maximum.
After the Border Sustain timer runs out, a Border Reflux will automatically be triggered, cancelling bullets. Additionally, one may also press X to immediately skip to Border Reflux.
When borders are chained - that is you do a Border Reflux and Border Release simultaneously, cancelled fragments become Golden Fragments, which also increases score multiplier of the current stage.
...Phew, that's a lot of info about borders, yet they are crucial. If you manage your border releases wisely, you can generate A LOT of score. The better if you also make a use of bottom right bar, that is a multiplier (kind of).
With every Red/Purple Fragment collected, besides border they increase multiplier bar shown at bottom right. As manual says, it "Indicates the multiplier value of the border fragments of opposite color to the ones currently being collected."
What that means to us? Basically, in order to make use of it you need to switch characters, by using C button. Once it's done, multiplier will get applied and the meter will decrease. Used wisely can make huge profit.
