Market penetration is the key performance metric for a business growth strategy stemming from the Ansoff Matrix (Richardson, M., & Evans, C. (2007). H. Igor Ansoff first devised and published The Ansoff Matrix in the Harvard Business Review in 1957, within an article titled "Strategies for Diversification". The grid/matrix is utilized across businesses to help evaluate and determine the next stages the company must take in order to grow, and the risks associated with the chosen strategy. With numerous options available, this matrix helps narrow down the best fit for your organization. This strategy involves selling current products or services into the existing market in order to obtain a higher market share. This could involve persuading current customers to buy more and new customers to start buying or even converting customers from their competitors. This could be implemented using methods such as competitive pricing, increase in marketing communications or utilizing reward systems such as loyalty points/discounts. New Strategies involve utilizing pathways and finding new ways to improve profits, increase sales and productivity, in order to stay relevant and competitive in the long run. Market penetration, although it can be performed throughout the business's life, it can be especially helpful in the primary stages of set up. It helps establish the businesses current station and which direction it needs to expand in to achieve market growth. Successful outcomes stem from careful monitoring by key staff and leaders. Timing is key to a successful market growth; this can be dependent on the overall market welfare, the business's competitors and current events. Questions, brainstorming and discussions can help distinguish whether it is the best time for market growth. These can include questions surrounding market share increases or decreases. Sales can be declining but shows opportunity for the business, it could be the perfect time to make alterations so as to grow market share. Market penetration can also be helpful when sales are proving to slow down, customers often need to be re-introduced to a company or reminded why they need your company's goods/services. With the consumers attention span becoming less and less, organizations need to constantly keep on top of competitors to stay relevant. Some factors of market penetration are holding costs, advanced inventory management practices and technology (e.g. ongoing replenishment and vendor managed inventory), supply chain problems and economies of scale (e.g., Chang and Lee 1995, Chen et al. 2005, Gaur and Kesavan 2005, Gaur et al. 2005, Hendricks and Singhal 2005, Huson and Nanda 1995, Lieberman et al. 1996). Market penetration, market development, and product development together establish market growth for a company. Overall the major growth opportunities they implement, attempts to peak sales through stressing current products in present markets and present products in new markets. This includes developing new products for existing markets, subsequently. It is about finding new ways to boost sales and keep customers loyal and increase market share. The product market expansion grid is used for planning by a company when the company is looking to increase the sale of its products either by expanding product range or entering new markets. Thus, there are various strategies that the company can develop when it compares the product with the current market. The product market expansion grid considers two main factors. The product and the market. The product can either be a current product or a new product. And the market can either be a current market or a new market. Thus, a grid is made, keeping in mind the two forms of products and the two forms of markets. This grid is the product market expansion grid. With the help of the grid, the proper market expansion strategy is decided. There are 4 main strategies of the product market expansion grid. These are mentioned below. Page Contents [show] Market penetration strategy Market penetration strategy is decided when the product is a current product in an existing market. It falls in quadrant 1. Thus, in such a case, the customers are aware about the product and due to one reason or another are not using the product. There are three main tactics which a company can implement to increase market penetration. Market development strategy The market development strategy is used when the product is an existing product but the market is new. This strategy falls in quadrant 2 of the grid. A company might decide to increase its territorial reach and therefore enter a new market. The new market may have tough competitors, or it may happen that the new company may be received very positively. In either of the cases, there are three main tactics which the company can use for market development. Product development strategy Product development is used when there is a new product which has to be introduced in an existing market. It falls in quadrant 3 of the matrix. This may be done because the companies products are not selling anymore or that the company has identified new segments which it had missed before and wants to introduce new product to increase product sales. There are majorly three tactics which the company can use for Product development. Diversification strategy Diversification strategy is used when a company enters new markets with new products. In such a scenario, the demands of the new market might be different from the current markets where the company exists. Thus, the company has to bring new products in new markets and hence the complication rises. In such a case, there are 3 different tactics which a company has to use to establish a diversification strategy. Thus, there are many tactics and 4 different strategies for market expansion. In today’s world, the most commonly used strategy is Market penetration, because the market is slowly becoming a crowded place with products being introduced daily in existing segments. However, for market leadership, companies like apple and Samsung have demonstrated that either market development or product development is needed if you want to permanently get ahead of your competition.

In fact, strategies such as market segmentation (identifying specific groups within a market) and product differentiation (creating an identity for a product or service that separates it from those of the competitors) are impossible to develop without market research. Market research involves two types of data: Primary information. This is research you compile yourself or hire someone to gather for you. Secondary information. This type of research is already compiled and organized for you. Examples of secondary information include reports and studies by government agencies, trade associations or other businesses within your industry. Most of the research you gather will most likely be secondary. When conducting primary research, you can gather two basic types of information: exploratory or specific. Exploratory research is open-ended, helps you define a specific problem, and usually involves detailed, unstructured interviews in which lengthy answers are solicited from a small group of respondents. Specific research, on the other hand, is precise in scope and is used to solve a problem that exploratory research has identified. Interviews are structured and formal in approach. Of the two, specific research is the more expensive.

If I get more of it, I'll make more sales What to do instead: focus on plugging up their current sales leaks first, focus on selling to current customers How to sell the other idea: “Great idea. I love it. How about if we got our current customers to pay for our traffic? If we ran a campaign to our current customers, we could generate some extra revenue and use that to pay for the traffic?” We're going to build a new product They think they need it because: they've run out of ideas/motivation to sell their current products. So they want to build or change products What to do instead: building new products doesn't help you sell current products. Change the offer, not the product. Put the old product in a new light. Sell it to a new market or frankly - try to make more offers to current customers. Most businesses simply not making enough offers to their current clients How to sell the other idea: “That's a great idea. I love adding new value to clients. I just want to make sure we're maximising revenue from what we've got. Can we try a few more campaigns of our current clients first? I have a feeling theirs a lot of sales left in X product that we've missed.” Let's redesign the website They think they need it because: surely redesigning a website will bring in new leads? What to do instead: Businesses and customers (and most marketers and designers) creative expenses such as websites, with marketing activity. A new website won't change sales, unless sales are already great. Instead, use email and remarketing to generate sales through an improved sales page and checkout page/order process. Follow up with missed leads and opportunities before investing in new “brand” How to sell the other idea: “I agree that we could focus on a new site. A lot of customers have done the same thing. Each member of the winning class will trade barbs with each other, but the status quo advertising methods of war presides. Very few established brands voluntarily redefine their sector. Most are content to sit back and play out the same battles over decades. When an upstart enters the frey and begins positioning a brand, it is important that the new product disrupts this equilibrium. Making similar claims as successful competitors will simply show that new product as an upstart trying to gain respect from its betters. The upstart brand must ask itself, what is customer focus? Why are the category leaders able to dominate with the current brand position? If the upstart brand can question and cast doubt about the leaders dominance, then positioning a brand takes on a whole new stage. The best competitors don't openly attacked the brand leader, who is probably beloved. Instead, they go after the very premise of the leaders dominance. They show that the game the leader is playing has changed and it is a new day, with new expectations from the customers, and new attributes to a winning product. What is customer relationship marketing? It is about planning a new game where the lead product is not the predestined winner of the marketing game. What is customer focus all about, it's about redefining the category marketing conversation so it starts a new conversation about the product. Brands like Cadillac get a standard of over-the-top lavish luxury. In order for them to be successful they must continue to play this game. Lexus has done the same thing. Audi's smartest move was that they picked a brand position that Cadillac and Lexus could not boldly move into. If you're going to be prestigious, stately, and successful, then it is not except to be sporty, rebellious, and a rule breaker. Cadillac and Lexus cannot move into Audis branding wheelhouse without seriously wondering off of their main brand message. Audi was smart enough to pick a brand position on the fringes of the luxury market and it will be content to pick away at the category leader with its rebellious message. From 2016 to mid-2018, selling a home was like selling a pair of vintage Ray-bans on E-bay.  You just took a few photos, wrote a brief and uninspiring description, started the bid low, and watched all the bidders clamor over the product.  It was much that way for selling a home or condo in Seattle.  A few photos, a few descriptions, and an offer review date.  As long as you didn't grossly over-price the home, you had several eager buyers all stomping on each other to buy your home.  There was even the "buy now" equivalent (Zillows Make-Me-Move feature). And then, seemingly overnight, Seattle real estate started to closer resemble the Price is Right.  Homes started to not get offers on the offer review date.  Homes were sitting on the market for (gasp!) weeks.  Sellers were actually dropping prices.  No longer did we have a frenzy of buyers to scoop the unreasonably high prices.   So now, when you are selling your home, you need to get that list price EXACTLY right.  If you price your home even a bit over what the fair market value is, you will end up lingering on the market, doing price drop after price drop, while you chase the market down.   In order to be successful in our current market, you can't hope for 2017 prices.  You need to find the exact, current and fair market price of your home or condo.  Homes that are well priced are still selling quickly.  It is possible to have a quick and relatively painless sale, as long as you are willing to offer your home for what is worth in THIS market.

transcript When most entrepreneurs begin the process of seeking a business loan, one of the first concerns that occupy their thoughts is the price of the loan - namely the interest rate they will be charged. As you already know, just getting a lender to consider your business loan request is hard enough these days - but, to get one to provide your business capital at a rate that you feel is the most beneficial to your operations is down right impossible. Every day I get requests from entrepreneurs (start-up or established business owners) who want to know where they can get a cheap business loan. My answer is always the same - define cheap. No loan is cheap but on the other side no loan is expensive either - if it is put to proper use. The difference between a few percentage points on a loan is no where near as meaningful as what is done with the loan proceeds. Business loans are meant to be a leveraging asset - meaning that you leverage current cash flow to obtain a loan then use that loan to generate more in new revenue than the loan costs. Thus, a loan is only an asset to be used by a business in its operation or quest to generate more income and wealth. Let's take a simple example: You and another local competitor have identified a market niche that could potentially create new uses for your current products. While this market is yet unproven, you both believe that it has tremendous potential. You go to your lender seeking a business loan for $100,000 for three years. The lender agrees and quotes a rate of 10%; making your monthly loan payment approximately $3,227. You feel that this rate is too high given the long relationship you have had with this lender and all the money you have paid to them over the years. Plus, you spent a few hours online researching that the average business loan rate is around 8%. Your lender states that he might be able to get your rate reduced to 8% but you will have to wait until their next loan committee in two weeks to get it approved. At 8%, you monthly loan amount would be approximately $3,134 - a $93 per month savings or $3,351 over the life of the loan over the 10% rate for the same amount. In the mean time, your competitor goes to the same lender and receives a loan quote for the same amount at the 10% rate. Your competitor takes the deal. By the time the loan committee approves your 8% rate - your competitor has already executed its marketing plan for this new market, has created demand for its products and is now generating an additional $10,000 per month in new revenue from this niche. Once your loan is funded, you attempt to execute your marketing plan but find that you are a bit too late and your business is only able to generate $4,000 per month in additional revenue (your product is seen as a copy cat to the new market leader - your competitor). While this new revenue pays for the loan - the new revenue generated for your business is still some $6,000 per month lower than your competitor. Let's look at the difference. Over three years, the total amount that you have to repay for the loan is $112,811 ($3,134 times 36 months). Your business brings in $4,000 per month for those same 36 months and you earn $144,000 with a net profit of $31,189. Your competitor spends more on his loan - $116.162 - but earns some $360,000 or net profits of $243,838 or 782% more than your business all because you wanted a cheap loan. The bottom line here is that the cost of the loan really did not matter here. The price that your business paid for not getting into this niche before your competitor is much higher (a loss of some $6,000 per month in revenue) then the $93 per month you saved. If you compare his rate of 10% to the profit he made of some $6,773 per month ($10,000 - the monthly payment) - his loan really was the cheaper one. And, it really doesn't matter if you actually had a competitor trying to beat you to the market. There is an opportunity cost of not taking a business loan or by not getting it when the time is right. Even if you were just delayed a few weeks while fighting for a lower rate - the amount of income that you lose by waiting (an amount that you can never make up as time does not go backwards) would exceed the amount you were trying to save - in this case, (if you did not have a competitor beat you to the niche) waiting two weeks would cost about $5,000 in new revenue while you were only getting a savings of $3,351 at the lower interest rate. Now, I am not saying that you should not try to get a better deal or lower interest rate but, make sure that by doing so you are not giving up more then you are trying to save. Thus, while you squabbled over a few percentage points looking for that so called cheap business loan, the price you paid for not getting your loan on time by far exceeded any potential savings. The idea is not to try to seek a lower interest rate business loan just based on the loan
