Racsim in the Fashion Industry - Nick Knight - Naomi Campbell

02:12
Having addressed the tricky, tricksy and often veiled subject of body size hand-in-hand with the equally inflammatory subject of feminism in his first Political Fashion film, Nick Knight now chooses to tackle the outright taboo subject of racism in the fashion industry. Despite increasing diversity throughout contemporary society, is is undoubtedly true that black models feature in fashion far less than their white counterpoints. Nick's film not only questions this, but as a fashion 'insider' takes the industry to task over one of the last arenas where racism is apparently a tacitly-accepted fact of life.

Fashion Is LITERALLY Art For Viktor & Rolf | Fashion Films | Refinery29

03:34
We mean LITERALLY. Watch on for the incredible collaboration. Fashion addict? We feel you. Subscribe to the Refinery29 channel: http://bit.ly/subscribe-to-r29 If there’s any difference between “clothes” and “fashion,” it’s that the latter can double as art. Fashion is imaginative, emotional, and evocative of things much larger than just “I am covering my body.” On one side of the spectrum are mainstream retail trends — clothes you can easily buy that help you say something about who you are that day. On the other side is haute couture — a veritable playground for designers with the means to create garments that are much more about fantasy than function. Designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren of Viktor & Rolf decided to explore the very, very far end of that clothes-art continuum by shutting down their eponymous ready-to-wear label last season to focus solely on haute couture. The result was a literal take on the idea that fashion can be art, using gold-painted frames, white canvases, and “paint splotches” that were — according to the show notes — created by “a complex layering of laser-cut jacquards, embroideries, and appliqués.” The duo further extended the idea by turning their final bow into performance art itself, manipulating the items worn by the models to transform them into sculpture-like paintings, which they then hung on a white wall. You may ask who, besides Lady Gaga, a Viktor&Rolf fan, would wear this stuff? Well, in this case, that isn’t even the point — and you wouldn't be able to buy even the very wearable chambray artist’s smocks if you wanted to. The entire collection was purchased by art collector Han Nefkens to be donated to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which may indicate what the ultimate answer to the question posed here is. In our latest collaboration video with Visionaire, we give you an insider's look at all the skill and care that went into this couture collection, and let you decide for yourself whether haute couture and high art are one and the same. Fashion's naked truths | The Economist

01:47
Half of all clothes are thrown away within one year—many have never been worn. The industry's obsession with fast fashion comes with a steep environmental price tag. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: https://econ.st/2xvTKdy Fashion is one of the fastest-growing industries on the planet. Around the world eighty billion new pieces of clothing are sold every year - 400% more than just forty years ago. Americans alone are buying five times more garments than in 1980. Now a $1.3 trillion mega industry, fashion employs more than 300 million people worldwide. While other industries have come apart at the seams, clothing production has doubled in the last 15 years. But it's a fashion statement with a steep environmental price tag - making one kilogram of fabric produces 23 kilograms of greenhouse gases. Textile production generates more carbon dioxide than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Yet half of all clothes are thrown away within one year - many having never been worn. Fashion is now considered the second most polluting industry in the world after oil. And with increasing middle classes in the developing world keen to make their own fashion statement, this will get worse. If 80 percent of emerging markets reach Western levels of clothes shopping, carbon dioxide emissions could increase by nearly 80% per person. By 2050 total clothing sales could reach 175 million tons - turning the planet into the biggest fashion victim of them all. Antifashion 90s in english

In the early 1990s, fashion reflected the times. It was sombre, desperate and sometimes violent. Clothing underwent deconstruction and recycling, and fashion shows became fashion performances.

Karl Lagerfeld - fashion designer and icon | DW Documentary

42:26
Karl Lagerfeld - the name stands for much more than just fashion. What makes the fashion icon so successful? Who’s the man behind the sunglasses? Designer, artist, fashion icon, also known as "Kaiser Karl." No living fashion designer, let alone a German one, is as celebrated as Karl Lagerfeld. On September 10, the man with the trademark ponytail and sunglasses will celebrate his 85th birthday - it’s believed. From dawn to late morning, Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel, Fendi and his own signature brand - a combined workload of up to 15 collections a year. A workhorse who never takes breaks or even a vacation, he is also a photographer and filmmaker. His passion for fashion was awakened by a Dior show in Hamburg in 1950. Four years later, at the age of 17, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld recounts his beginnings in the industry, as well as his upper class background and childhood in Schleswig-Holstein. Karl Lagerfeld was greatly influenced by his mother, whom he describes as his personal style icon. Karl Lagerfeld's caustic comments are notorious and dreaded by those at the receiving end. As an artist, Karl Lagerfeld works in several media, from pictures and photographs to book illustrations and videos. The documentary follows Karl Lagerfeld to exhibition openings, during the hectic preparations for his fashion shows, and at photo shoots in Paris as it seeks to uncover the man behind the mask. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. The future of fashion | The Economist

The fashion industry is on the verge of a tech revolution. Clothes of tomorrow could be designed, fitted and sold to us by technology alone. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: https://econ.st/2xvTKdy From Gucci to Chanel, Topshop to Primark - Clothes industry heavyweights rely on fashion forecasters for next season's new look. But advancements in artificial intelligence are about to turn their art into a science. Cognitive computing is now able to identify patterns previously inaccessible to humans. It can simultaneously analyse vast amounts of global data - from social media buzz to political polls - making it possible to accurately spot what's hot and what's not. WGSN, the world's biggest fashion forecaster. now uses AI alongside more traditional methods. A move that could reduce forecasting errors by up to 50%. Trend-spotting mistakes can have far-reaching consequences. H&M recently confessed to a $4.3 billion unsold stock mountain. Industry waste costs both profits and reputation. Technology could make the fashion industry more sustainable. By using machine learning, an AI technique, to match supply with demand unnecessary manufacturing could be limited and fashions environmental footprint reduced. Online retailers are cottoning on. In the next two years 75% of fashion retailers plan to invest in AI. But keeping up with tech giants is going to be tough. Amazon is now developing what's believed to be the world's first AI fashion designer. It plans to use an algorithm that designs clothes by analyzing images and copying popular styles - using them to build completely new designs. This technological makeover could hold huge benefits especially for those who like to shop online. A Japanese company has unveiled the Zozo, a body measurement suit that will ensure the clothes you order fits you perfectly. All meaning our future wardrobes could contain clothes designed for us and sold to us by technology alone. Christian Dior The Man Behind the Myth

50:21
It’s 1947. France is in the midst of reconstruction after the war. Although fabrics are being rationed, a young designer wins the world over to his daring vision of feminine elegance. He once again establishes Paris as the capitol of fashion. His name, Christian Dior, is destined to reach the realm of myth. This man, however, who so completely changed and glamorized haute couture from 1947 to 1957, contradicts the extroverted, flamboyant image the public has of fashion designers. Christian Dior, never comfortable with his celebrity, was a reserved, conservative man who hadn’t even considered working in the fashion industry. The events that led up to his role as “director of dreams for high society” astonished him more than anyone. He was a down-to-earth, humble man who treated the 900 employees of his large company as family. They were the ones he worked with to make the creations he so enjoyed drawing a reality. In the fashion industry, design only creates a product. One needs these products to find their ways to shop windows and then to customers. In this documentary, directed by Rakesh Mathur ([email protected]), we meet young people who are aspiring to make it big in the fashion industry. We also meet those who are helping these designers to realize their dreams through proper business planning. This film was made in the pre-internet age but the methods discussed here are still relevant today.

How a Dior Dress is Made | Visionaire | Refinery29

04:28
Subscribe to the Refinery29 channel: http://bit.ly/subscribe-to-r29 “Couture” is a magic word. It conjures thoughts of impeccable craftsmanship, visionary design, and legendary fashion moments. But, most of us don't encounter haute couture very often, unless we're looking at a celebrity on the red carpet, a model on a catwalk, or a mannequin in a museum case. We wanted to get closer to couture — and to get you closer to couture — so we partnered with the legendary fashion publisher Visionaire to create this video, which tells the story of one dress from birth to runway. It’s a unique look inside the Dior atelier, where the team has been hard at work bringing creative director Raf Simons’ ideas to life. While an individual couture garment can take half a year to produce, here you will see the story of one dress (“Look #53,” in fashion-speak) come together in just a few minutes — from the first muslin pattern to the final style model Kinga Rajzak wore during yesterday’s haute couture show. It’s an incredible revelation, and when you discover what goes into these garments, the crazy prices on couture start to seem at least a little less crazy. While Look #53 is the star of the show, the video gives us the chance to reconnect with the rarely credited artisans and seamstresses we saw in Dior and I, as well as a cameo from Simons himself. Think of this as a mini-trip to Paris or a crash course into fashion’s highest form; either way, enjoy your couture, concentrated. Counterfeit Culture Moscow: Inside the Russian Fashion Black Market

16:55
For the second installment of Counterfeit Culture, Highsnobiety’s first-ever documentary series, we headed to Moscow to find what’s driving Russia’s thriving market for fake streetwear. Russia’s counterfeit industry stretches back decades, to when Communism isolated the country from Western products. Now, almost 30 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia’s borders are open, but a fragile economy, international sanctions and low wages has kept the country’s demand for fakes alive and well.
