My Place: Dilara Findikoglu
When London-based designer Dilara Findikoglu—a Central St Martins graduate of Turkish origin—launched her SS17 collection, she did so with an ear-shattering rock soundtrack in a SoHo strip club. Such is typical of a creator who has taken the fashion world both by sabotage and storm. Her reputation for goth aesthetics and shock-like marketing is matched by the designer’s desire to address social issues in her work, questioning a deeply closeted industry while reassessing the female body itself. This Barbara Anastacio-directed profile of the designer’s London home reveals a universe of alluring trinkets and surreal ceremonial mascots, befitting a creator whose work is a spellbinding assemblage of historical references and futuristic fabrications—where Marie Antoinette-style makeup and sci-fi fabrics jostle against Victorian silhouettes and cryptic sorcery. Muslim Designers Launch "International Modest Fashion Week"
On Friday the International Modest Fashion Week opened in Istanbul, showcasing the latest in Spring colors, breezy fabrics, high necklines and long hemlines. Seventy designers will take part in the two-day event, which is hosted by online Muslim fashion retailer Modanisa. Located in a historic railway station bathed in the requisite runway spotlights, the event is part of Turkey's attempt to be seen as a global creative hub for conservative wear such as hijabs and veils. According to Modanisa CEO Kerim Ture, the group's goal is "to create mainstream fashion out of modest fashion and to energize Islamic communities to produce (clothing) for Muslim women." http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/4e67281c3f754d0696fbfdee0f3f1469/Article_2016-05-13-EU--Turkey-Fashion/id-36b3951383a44b0d8b882c42ad396672 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Entertainment using http://wochit.com

World designers gather for Istanbul's 1st design week
(19 Oct 2016) LEAD IN: From multi sensory lighting to 3D printed clothing, tech inspired designs are the focus of Design Week Turkey. The four day event is a first for Istanbul and is already attracting international designers. STORY-LINE: Design Week Turkey opened its doors on Wednesday (19th October 2016) kicking off with the world renown Italian lamp designer, Patrick Rampelotto famed for his trophy lamps. Other international names as Finnish designer Minna Parikka and London-based designer and architect Daniel Widrig, who worked with the late Zaha Hadid, are also exhibited. Widrig is bringing its 3D printed space inspired steel chairs to the exhibition. Parikka is participating in conferences. But an influx of new designers are bringing the novelties to Istanbul's very first design week. Marco Stefanelli, from The Boxer Design in Turin, is the designer of "Multisensory Design Lamp." "This lamp is made of cedar wood and resin. Multi-sensory design because we watch it, of course it is a lamp, we touch it, we sit on it also. But to manage, to turn on and turn off this lamp we have to touch it. Like this." The lamp is valued 165,000 US dollars. Amr Ezzeldinn, is the Egyptian co-founder architect of Ezgat, Milano, and designer of 3D print fashion clothes. He believes visiting traditional shops will soon be a thing of the past. "This is a 3D printed dress, ok? Which we are pushing the boundaries to discover how the clothing of the future will be. So basically there will be a scanner, you can scan your body, to understand the measures, send the measures, and the scan after that will send you a model in which fits exactly your body, and you can buy it from your home, print it and wear it," he says. But costs would need to be a little less exclusive if he wanted to break into the mass market. Right now each item of clothing is unique and costs on average 3,300 US dollars Ezzeldinn hopes that the more popular 3D printed clothing gets, the cheaper it will become. German designer Lilien Stenglein has brought her smart yoga suit to Istanbul. Stenglein is the designer and founder of Lilien Finess Design, Germany, producing yoga Electrocouture designs. "The yoga suit for the Digital Yogi, the specialty for this yoga suit is that it actively helps to open up the chakra points and it has special smart textiles incorporated which are highlighted with the only created laser cutting mesh so we are using a lot of technology," she says. The suits are tailored and made using silver - prices are anything up to 2,700 US dollars. According to the organisers, a total of 40 international designers are participating in the exhibition with their products or through conferences, together with more than 50 Turkish designers. "Istanbul is a unique platform. Istanbul is bringing the ideas from Eastern culture and Western culture. It really really connects every part, I mean, from North to South from East to West. So in design perspective you can see a lot of different and unusual consumer attitudes," says Sertaç Ersayin, President, Industrial Designers Association of Turkey The most popular Turkish designers are working on furniture and coffee machines, according to the Industrial Designer Association of Turkey. Design Week Turkey is being held at the Lutfi Kirdar Exhibition Centre in Istanbul from October 19 to 23 2016. New designers on London Modest Fashion Week catwalk
(19 Feb 2018) LEADIN: Emerging new designers have been showcasing their collections at London Modest Fashion Week. Fashionable Muslims flocked to the event to be inspired by the latest conservative but chic outfits. STORYLINE: Fashion with attitude. Models clothed in designs by sportswear brand Strong Habibti stalk the catwalk at London Modest Fashion Week. The event is only in its second year, but it's quickly becoming the hottest ticket in town for stylish Muslims. The designers are catering for fashionistas who can't find the modest outfits they want in highstreet shops or exclusive boutiques. "Currently the mainstream is not serving this market sufficiently with clothing," says Romanna Bint-Abubaker, founder of London Modest Fashion Week. "Therefore, this grass roots evolution has happened with designers and individuals growing collections." Around 100 designers from across the world are showing that covering up doesn't mean sacrificing style. Their clothing leaves very little skin on display - perfect for following a typical Islamic dress code. And there are many new faces making a name for themselves in this niche market. Under-Rapt has a show in the sportswear section of Modest Fashion Week. A sports hijab by the brand costs 18 pounds, while a sports jacket retails for 75 pounds. Under-Rapt was founded in early 2017 by British-Egyptian designer Yasmin Sobeih. She says she thought there was a gapin the market for "trend-driven, modest athleisure wear". But her ideology goes further than just providing work-out gear for Muslim women. Key to her principles is using eco-friendly, sustainable fabrics. She has vetted her suppliers carefully and speaks to them directly rather than buying from an intermediary. "One thing that I definitely do notice in the market, whether you're Muslim or non-Muslim, is people now care a lot more about who's making their clothes, where it's coming from and I have the answers to all of those," she says. New designers are bringing old silhouettes to the runway too. Saudi brand The O Boutique has been running for just two years. They've bagged a catwalk show in the 'Emerging Talent' category. But the abayas that make up its signature style have been a staple of Middle Eastern wardrobes for far longer. Still, the orchid motifs decorating the fabric and the material they are made from give the clothing a modern twist. "This was our aim at the beginning, like to make our traditional clothing into more fashionable and trendy wear," says founder Ola Alkhuzayel. She says the biggest challenge setting up her business was "competition back home". "Everyone is doing so much abayas, so much kaftans and ready to wear, but how you stand out between this competition was really hard." Organisers of London Modest Fashion Week says this conservative style is a trend that will continue to grow. And they say new designers must work hard to be dinstinctive. "The market's going to get very saturated very quickly with emerging talent," says Bint-Abubaker. "So I encourage designers and young designers to go and aquire technical skills to create true innovation in their collections, otherwise we're going to have a lot of designers creating collections for modest fashion but they all look very similar." But if this year's catwalks are anything to go by, there's plenty of imaginative clothing and unusual style available for Muslim fashionistas. London Modist Fashion week was a two-day event hosted by online modest clothing retailer Haute Elan. ► PITTI with Guest Nation: Focusing on Turkey | by yoox.com
http://yoox.ly/yooxFashion According to popular myth, 'seven' is a very lucky number. It seems as if this belief has influenced the organizers of this edition of Pitti Uomo and Pitti W, who chose seven Turkish designers to represent the excellence of the country's fashion industry. For several seasons, the Pitti Discovery Foundation, in collaboration with yoox.com, had dedicated a special space to international emerging talents during the project Guest Nation. January had Denmark as its main country, while the stars of this season's event are the most talented emerging Turkish designers. Their names are Asli Filinta, Deniz Kaprol, Elif Ciğizoğlu, Emre Erdemoğlu, Hatice Gökçe, Niyazi Erdoğan, Zeynep Tosun, and for accessories design, Rumisu. At this year's Pitti, the designers present their collections all inspired by the theme 'Gentlemen from Istanbul' in the Sala della Scherma, inside the Fortezza da Basso. Each designer has been asked to revisit the idea of Turkish gentlemen's suits, interpreting a sort of virtual tour of the city of Istanbul from its seven hills, finding the perfect mix between tradition and oriental culture, contemporary design, this Spring/Summer's trends and the most advanced technologies. *** yoox.com, established in 2000, is the world's leading lifestyle e-store for multi-brand fashion, design and art. Shopping on yoox.com is all about discovery - an eclectic and playful journey beyond fashion's strict seasonal rules - allowing men and women to express their individuality through timeless and creative style. http://yoox.ly/shopyoox Powered by YOOX Group

Turkish designer criticised for misappropriating Māori designs
A Turkish designer on show at the London Fashion Week is getting some Māori worked up. The designer is Gul Agis and her collection is called Tribal Attitude. At first there was no mention of any Māori influence in her work despite the items having a distinctive Māori look. Instead the collection was said to be inspired by Turkey's rich heritage and riots which took place in Istanbul earlier this year.

My Fashion Fest – Romanian Designers Edition: Elena Nita
Designer Elena Nita launched "Wanda's Dream" clothing line in New York, the "city that never sleeps", in 2007. Two years later she decided to return to Romania and promote the women's clothing brand in her homeland. Wanda's Dream collections are addressed to strong, bold and modern women. The variety of outfits designed with various materials such as silk, lace, leather and lacquered leather, tulle, feathers, insertions and studs, emphasizes the feminine shape and instantly bring those who wear them in the spotlight. The flawless cuts and elaborated details manufactured with delicate and precious materials give the design a noticeable complexity yet can be easily worn, matching any type of feminine personality. The clothing lines designed by Elena Nita proved to be a great success, being highly appreciated by the public in the numerous fashion festivals that they were showcased in. To name a few, "Bucharest Fashion Week", "Summer Fashion Week" and "Sibiu Fashion week " are important fashion events where models walked the catwalk wearing Wanda's Dream creations" and the brand became more and more appreciated. International acknowledgment soon followed and the fame of 'Wanda's Dream" reached a new peak when the collection was presented during the renowned Film Festival of Cannes 2013. Moreover, the frequent presence in TV shows that focus on beauty, style and talent (such as "Next Top Model by Catalin Botezatu", "Te cunosc de undeva", "Vocea Romaniei" "Dansez pentru tine") as well as the press coverage (shooting sessions in Elle, Viva, Story and Tango magazines) helped "Wanda's Dream" to become an increasingly successful name, highly admired by the public. A result of the ascension of "Wanda's Dream" was the collaboration with public figures from Romania. Artists and public figures such as Inna, Anda Adam, Antonia, Bianca Dragusanu, Adelina Pestritu, Andreea Balan, Gina Pistol, Misha, Nicole Cherry, Ozana Barabancea and Sorana chose to wear "Wanda's Dream" outfits at numerous events and their appearance did not fail to be noticed and admired. Thank you for your contribution to the fulfillment of my dream!
