(I have small calves) - Thomas DeLauer Muscle Fiber Types Slow twitch muscle fibers have roughly half the growth potential of fast twitch fibers, and a study published in The European Journal of Physiology compared the composition of fiber types in the soleus and gastrocnemius, as well as with other leg muscles It was found that the soleus muscle contained predominantly slow twitch (Type I) fibers with the mean for all subjects being 80% (range 64 to 100%) In contrast, the gastrocnemius and vastus lateralis (side of the thigh) muscles only contained 57% slow twitch fibers (range 34–82%) - so the gastroc, which is the big portion of the calf, contained only 34% slow twitch fibers in some people (1) There's another reason that the calves, especially the soleus, are relatively unresponsive to weight training: the calves keep your body upright when you're standing or walking More specifically, the soleus -the flat muscle that canvases the entire backside of your leg - is made up primarily of slow-twitch fibers, which means that it is built for endurance, not for the explosive, powerful movements that are propelled by fast-twitch fibers In day-to-day life, whether you’re walking to work, standing in line, going up the stairs, etc. you’re engaging your calves in a constant, low-intensity workout - as a result, those muscles need to be able to take a beating, and being bigger doesn't help As such, slow-twitch fibers just don’t get as big - their myocytes (the cells that make up your muscles) don’t get as much hypertrophy as fast-twitch fibers when you stress them In any case, the soleus is predominantly a slow twitch muscle as it is more involved in overall stability of the ankle - so the difference in fiber type between the gastroc and soleus has implications for training (more later) Aside from their fiber type composition, there's nothing inherent that prevents the calves from growing However, both training status and muscle architecture should be taken into account in your training program The calves require a high volume and a high frequency of high reps, especially the soleus - the gastrocnemius requires more moderate training parameters -------------- Calf Insertion Points Most sprinters and runners in general have high calves and long Achilles tendons since the tendons act like rubber bands - they absorb the force and return it, just like a rubber band, and the longer the rubber band (the tendon), the more force it can produce So those that have naturally “high-riding calves,” where the gastrocnemius - the muscle that forms the bump at the top of the back of your lower leg, and that is made up of fast-twitch fibers - is super tight, and these people are just naturally better at activities like sprinting Simply, it's easier to jump high and run fast when you have high cut calves with short muscle bellies and long achilles tendons Short muscle bellies A short muscle belly means that the muscle attaches high on the tendon, meaning the tendons are somewhat long and the muscle is somewhat short Long muscle bellies This is considered a genetic advantage in bodybuilding because it allows you to grow more mass and have fuller muscles Training the Calves Doing calf work with the knee bent (i.e. seated calf raise) tends to work the soleus preferentially, since the gastroc crosses the knee, if the knee is bent, the gastroc can’t contribute as significantly to force output To sum up: The gastroc is primarily a fast-twitch muscle The soleus is primarily a slow-twitch muscle If you do calf work with straight legs, you work both the gastroc and soleus If you do calf work with bent legs, you work only the soleus When you bounce, the achilles tendon does much, if not most of the work and the calf does little It’s believed that upper body muscles have more androgen receptors than lower body - thus, it is possible that this hormonal difference permits greater development of upper limb muscles than lower limb References 1) Human soleus muscle: A comparison of fiber composition and enzyme activities with other leg muscles. Step left, bow down with a straight back, and turn your torso in line with your right leg. Touch your left ankle with your right hand, keeping your right leg straight, and your left one bent at the knee. - #7. Prop yourself on your hands and right knee, stretching your left leg. Slowly raise your left leg until it reaches peak height, then slowly lower it back. Change your leg afterward, and repeat. However, the problem usually isn’t with the quads, most people hit those every week. But when it comes to the HAMSTRINGS, I don’t see too many people in my gym attacking them all that often. If you want that nice thick, round look, you need to prioritise them, not to mention the fact that they also go hand-in-hand with increasing your squat and deadlift. Hack #1: Don’t Ignore The Basic Function Of The Hamstrings Unfortunately, most people only focus on isolation exercises for the hamstrings, and believe it or not this can lead to an injury because the hamstrings will start to learn to work as an isolated muscle group as opposed to with the glutes. So if your workout program only consists of performing isolation type movements for the hamstrings, you’re training them in a way they’re not supposed to be trained for maximum performance. If this sounds like you, make sure when you train your hamstrings you start your workouts with exercises that involve hip extension, like deadlifts, hip thrusts, glute bridges or squats. This will help you avoid a future hamstring injury because these exercises train the glutes and hamstrings together, which is their intended function…not just knee flexion. Hack #2: Focus On Overloading Your Hamstrings During The Stretch Once you’ve incorporated some of the exercises from hack #1 into your routine, don’t just run to a prone leg curl or a seated leg curl as your next exercise. Yes, exercises like these can give you a good flex, but the stretch is non-existent and that is where you get the most muscle damage for regrowth. I’m not going to say that either of those are bad exercises, but you need to utilize the proper order of these movements to see the most gains. For instance, you get much more muscle damage for regrowth from exercises that require a deep stretch, such as a Romanian deadlift. This movement should be a staple in your hamstrings training, so let’s go over proper form. Romanian Deadlift There are a few things you have to keep in mind before you even start doing Romanian deadlifts. Number 1, unless you have really freaky flexibility, the weight should not touch the ground between your reps. It should hover an inch or two above the ground every single time. Basically you’re going to be bringing the bar down to about mid-shin level. Number 2, you’re not doing a traditional squat stance. You want to stand with your feet about shoulder width apart, and your toes facing forward so that your heels are ‘under’ your shoulders. The last thing you have to keep in mind for this movement is that there is NO spinal flexion during the movement. That’s where most people go wrong with the exercise, and is why many people have back pain and/or don’t feel their hamstrings working and stretching. Proper form involves standing with your feet shoulder width apart while the barbell is on the ground in front of you. Once in place, you want to reach down and grab the barbell a little wider than shoulder width, so that your hands don’t grind down your thighs as you go up and down, and you’ll then deadlift the bar up. Once you’re in position gripping the barbell, you’re going to sit back while keeping your chest up. The bar should drag down your thighs, and then when the bar gets to about knee height, you’re then going to try to sit back even more while keeping that slight arch in your back. By the time you get to about mid-shin level, you should feel a DEEP stretch in your hamstrings (at this point the bar should still be about 3 inches off the ground). You’ll then return to the top of the movement and repeat. Keep in mind you want to control your negatives and go nice and slow – this is not a fast movement. There's a certain look that we can define as more of an attribute of a masculine looking body just like there are certain looks and traits that we can define for a feminine looking body. With women one of the most attractive shapes to men is the Hourglass shape. And thats According to a study conducted by dr. Dixon from Victoria University, he said that men rated images with an hourglass shape and a small waist as most attractive. The other way aroynd with women rating men it appears a strong muscular upper body in the shape of a v seems to be more attractive. This is according to a new study from Griffith University in Queensland. Now before I get into these exercises that will help you build a more attractive body as a man I'd like to issue a disclaimer because this is not one of those channels where I'm going to tell you that by getting a six pack you're going to have girls flocking all over you that's just not how it works. Please understand that to be an attractive man you can't just rely on how you look. But we all know that first impressions can definitely help so let's start with the very first exercise that you should be doing and that's the lat pulldown. Why am I big fan of the lat pulldown well because part of getting that V shape is to have a wider upper body then your waist. A huge portion of your width stems from your back. The lat pulldown is an excellent exercise to work your lats your back the back of your shoulders and your biceps. Make sure when you're doing the lat pulldown for width you go wider with your grip on the bar. Also make sure that when you come down you flare your elbows out that'll put more pressure on the lats and move you towards that v-shape appearance. The next exercise you want to make sure you're doing as a guy are squats. Part of having an aesthetic looking figure is maintaining proper proportions. If you have a huge upper body even if it's in the shape of a v but your lower body makes you look like you're about to topple over it's not going to look very good at all. On top of that squats are going to work your whole body especially your core in a way that most exercises can't. It helps you train your transverse abdominis which is the Deep layer abdominal muscle fiber that helps pull your stomach in and gives you that flat stomach look. It's also no secret that girls just like guys prefer fuller butts rather than flatter butts. So when you do your squats make sure you go nice and low and you sit back in order to really incorporate your glutes and thighs into the movement. The next exercise you want to make sure you're doing for building an ideal male physique is some form of bench pressing dumbell pressing or pushing movement. The reason why I say bench pressing or pushing movement is because it's very hard to work your chest muscles effectively any other way. The chest is a lagging muscle group for many guys and unfortunately most functional exercises fail to incorporate horizontal abduction. Which is when you bring your hands together from far away like a chest fly. Horizontal abduction is required to build up your chest and once again you want to maintain portions you don't want to have huge arms and a tiny chest. Make sure at least once a week you're dedicating sometime to getting some pressing movements into your routine. The good news is that while you're doing the presses you'll not only be working your chest but you also be working your shoulders and your triceps as well. Shoulders especially the middle head of your shoulder is another muscle that's important for giving you that wider upper body appearance. That's why you want to make sure that you incorporate the fourth exercise which is overhead presses whether it be military presses or dumbbell presses they're going to help grow your shoulders giving you that wider V tappered appearance. A lot of people do make mistakes of not going low enough when they do a military shoulder press that I want to make sure you guys watching this video don't make so you can have the maximum results for your shoulders. When you come down for a military press or a dumbbell press you don't want to stop at eye level or your level you want to come down under your chin. If you're only going to eye level or ear level you're working a lot more triceps rather than the shoulders that you're intending to work.

When it comes to how to lose fat, there are some differences between men and women, and it goes beyond the simps differences in how we store it. In this video we look at how to lose fat, the right way, for men VS women. As you probably already know, men and women have different trouble spots when it comes to where they store fat. We’ll not only look at how men and women differ in terms of fat storage but we’ll also uncover several strategies that address the challenges that each face in their pursuit of fat loss. For men, trouble spots tend to be in the chest. Chest fat, or man boobs start to develop when men are carrying too much body fat. The waist line or Love Handles is another trouble spot. Perhaps the most notable trouble spot is in the mid section or beer belly. Even in examples of significant leanness men will store fat deposits in very specific areas of their mid section such as their lower abdominals and lower back. For women, the fat loss trouble differ. Fat deposits on the backs of the arms creating’bat wings’. Women also experience more fat storage in their lower bodies; hips, thighs and calves. You’ve probably heard the terms saddlebags, cankles or muffin top to describe these trouble spot. This is evident in women who appear to be skinny or skinny fat, you’ll see that the areas mentioned above often show signs of extra fat deposited. Many of the differences in where fat is stored come down to hormones, specifically Testosterone and Estrogen. Men and women don’t only have different trouble spots however, they also have different types of fat storage as well. Testosterone often creates more visceral fat. That is, fat stored behind the muscle sounding the organs. Classic examples of this type of fat are men that have a rock hard protruding beer gut. This is caused by the fat actually pushing out against the layer of abdominal muscle. Since visceral fat surrounds the vital organs, this type of fat is more dangerous. Typically we see higher cases of heart disease in men often caused by their increased storage of visceral fat. Women on the other hand have more subcutaneous fat. Subcutaneous fat is often driven by the binding of estrogen. While this type of fat is less dangerous than visceral fat it can still be troublesome and if you have it, you likely want it gone! When it comes to strategies for losing fat the recommendation for women is to focus on exercises, specifically strength training over steady state cardio. Strength training will allow women to add muscle to their frames which is not only anabolic in itself, but will also help increase their existing levels of testosterone which will also help aid in fat loss. For men, the focus should almost always be on nutrition. Since men have larger amounts of testosterone already, and likely carry more muscle mass as a result, they will generally want to focus on getting their eating in check. This will help lower their body fat especially when done in conjunction with a smart exercise program. In addition to the tips above regarding fat loss through proper nutrition and exercise, you can also try incorporating some of mother natures secret ingredients. Foods like Oysters for additional Zinc, Red Grapes for Resveratrol, cruciferous vegetables for their high levels of phytochemicals. Other excellent foods to incorporate are mushrooms and fresh ginger.
