Two major French fashion companies have unveiled a new global charter banning underweight and underage models from representing their brands. Between them, holding companies Kering and LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton own dozens of high-end labels, including Gucci, Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen and Marc Jacobs. How Zara Took Over The Industry Using Fast Fashion

Today, we’re going to look at the history of Zara, its parent company Inditex, and the fashion industry in general, to see how it became possible to create such a high churn rate in the fashion industry. An average American will throw away 77 pounds of clothing every year. And that’s true across the majority of the western world. That is two suitcases of clothes, just dumped. Zara’s first store opened in 1975, in a city called A Coruna in northern Spain. Owners Amancio Ortega and Rosalia Mera had wanted to name it after a favorite Greek film called Zorba the Greek, but a bar on their street had already beat them to the punch, so they settled for Zara, since they had already had the letters made for the sign. Inditex was set up in 1985 as holding company for Zara and the manufacturing plants. They went on to set up and take-over many other high-street brands that follow Zara’s format; such as Pull and Bear, Bershka and Stradivarius. They now have over 6000 stores globally. Zara’s early business model was to create similar copies to high end lines but at an affordable price. From the 1940s to the 1960s, the modern runway show emerged in Manila alongside developments in postwar Filipino nationalism, as the Philippines, newly independent from the United States and Japan, sought to articulate its relationships to Asia and the United States. Given that the label "made in the Philippines" has long been synonymous with inexpensive, outsourced labor, what did—and does—it mean to view couture as centered not in the global North, but from the vantage of the global South? How can Filipino couture—as art form, product, and performance—reconfigure the gendered categories that have shaped our understanding of postcolonialism and global exchange? To embody such principle, fashion artists showcased unique products based on the reinterpretation of Korea's cultural legacy. Olivier Hur reports. Report: We are here at an art gallery located in Insa-dong, Seoul. The gallery is holding an exhibition called "Heritage in Fashion," where the past and the present coexist. Displaying works by 12 artists, the exhibition showcases an umbrella inspired by the color and patterns of the Goryeo celadon, a clutch bag reinterprets the image of golden crown and other art works that take themes and inspirations from Korea's unique tradition. The latest show is meaningful because it has overcome the limit of traditional Korean fashion. Rather than replicating, they reinterpreted tradition with new perspectives. Interview - Lee Gye-sun, director of art gallery As we contemplate how to represent Korea to foreign audiences, we came to plan this kind of art show. The exhibition, to be continued up until February 21 at the Tong-in art gallery in Insa-dong, not only allows new conversations about Korean tradition blended in fashion, but also opens up a new horizon on making Korea's traditional designs global. So far, the Korean fashion industry had a stigma of copying overseas luxury brands. My name is David Inns, and I'm the Director of FP&A and BI (Business Intelligence) at Zalora. I look after all the business planning, but also look after getting together all the data that we need to put together the plans. We sell fashion throughout Southeast Asia. Zalora is part of a larger group called GFG (Global Fashion Group). GFG is a holding company for similar ventures in other emerging markets. We brought in Anaplan to simplify our planning process. We have quite a decentralized network throughout the organization, with the logistics teams spread out throughout the region and buying teams in different markets. And we wanted to be able to pull together all that information in a cohesive way. We use Anaplan to pull together our full assortment plan, which is what products we're going to buy into for the next season, which drives our top line. But obviously, as we operate a full supply chain, the volume going out of that goes into driving our fulfillment costs to get the product to the customers. We built out several modules within Anaplan to enable different functions of the business to have input into coming up with the business plan. So once we've got an idea about our overall top-down targets for the business, we can then have the businesses work in each of the underlying modules to see how they're going to come together to achieve the plan. Resourcing is obviously the biggest cost driver for us, so we worked with our HR team to build out a full enterprise-wide resource planning tool that enables people to take their existing resourcing levels and then make some fairly complex decisions in terms of changes that they will be undertaking in their departments with their resourcing throughout the year. Anaplan has helped us with some considerable time savings during the planning process. Not only have we avoided all the historic Excel crashes, but that consolidation and administration of the data has become a lot easier, enabling the various teams involved in pulling together the consolidated views to actually start reviewing the data straight away rather than spending all that time pulling it together. Where we used to take several days to consolidate all of those spreadsheets to get a view, we've now got within seconds—the moment they input the information, and the timeframe is cut off, we can see what the cost will be. Connected planning is important because it enables the owners of the budgets to have an active role in bringing together the business plans. Now with our assortment planning and resource planning, we are mostly done with our logistics out of the business. And I now will be looking to further extend that into other parts of the business, particularly on expenses, and possibly even on the marketing front.

He was 77. The family announced that he died Monday evening at his home in the northern city of Treviso, where the fashion brand is based. Italian news reports said he had suffered an undisclosed illness. Gilberto, along with siblings Carlo, Luciano and Giuliana, founded the Benetton knitwear company in 1965, transforming it into a global brand. Over the years, the family became more involved in financial investments through the Edizione holding company, including in Autostrade SpA, which has been under pressure since the collapse of a Genoa highway bridge in August killed 43 people.
