Russia Has Annexed Black Sea Provinces Before

23:18
Crisis in the Caucasus (2008): As Russian tanks rolled into South Ossetia, the world's eyes turned East. In the West the message was clear: Georgia falls victim to Russian aggression. But is our media telling us the whole story? For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=59119 Today Abkhazia, previously a province of Georgia, is celebrating independence after Russian military forced Georgia out of the province. The sky flashes with fireworks and Abkhazians dance in the streets. But few outside share Abkhazia's enthusiasm. 'Russia is now directly telling all its neighbours that it will be using force -- that it is trying to restore its lost empire', says Georgi Badrize, a Georgian diplomat. Few in the West would disagree. But in Abkhazia's Parliament, president Sergey Bagapsh is giving official thanks to Russia. This day, he tells us, marks the end of decades of Georgian abuse. 'People were starving', he says. 'We couldn't treat our kids, we were not allowed to import medications'. Many Azkhazians are angered by the pro-Georgian stance of Western media. 'Everybody thinks that the Georgians deserve independence and freedom and the right to be part of the international community', says humanitarian worker Liana Kvarchelia, 'and we are not'. Bagapsh claims that it is not only the media that is biased in Georgia's favour. He provides our reporter with an armed guard and permission to enter the border region between Abkhasia and Georgia, where he claims we will find evidence that the UN and NATO were complicit in Georgia's illegally stockpiling of weapons for an attck against Abkazia. A shocking and fascinating report. SBS Dateline - Ref no - 4174 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. Footage: Algae color ‘China’s Dead Sea’ in red and green

00:32
A salt lake in the city of Yuncheng, north China’s Shanxi Province, has proven that Mother Nature is an unmatched colorist.   The waters of the salt lake seem to have been dyed in red on one side of the lake, while staying green on the other side. Fittingly enough, an avenue rising above the lake played the demarcation line, separating the two colors in such precision that prompted visitors to snap pictures of this scientifically-explained natural miracle.   The distinct pinkish red color was caused by the proliferation of a certain type of algae Dunaliella salina, it has been reported.   Covering an area of 120 square kilometers, the salt lake, which stretches 30 kilometers in length, is the largest in Shanxi Province and the world’s third largest sodium sulphate inland lake. Due to its high salinity, the lake has been dubbed as “China’s Dead Sea” and offers a safe destination for swimmers who can’t stay afloat. Russia to build futuristic nuclear-powered icebreaker to keep Northern Sea Route open - TomoNews

05:53
ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA — Russia has unveiled a new nuclear-powered icebreaker that is designed to keep the Northern Sea Route open all year round. Russia’s new nuclear-powered icebreaker, known as Leader, will exceed 200 meters in length and will be about 50 meters wide. It would be capable of plowing through 2-meter-thick ice at a speed of 29 kph and capable of cutting through ice up to 4.5 meters thick. It is expected that the new icebreaker would lead tankers carrying liquefied natural gas weighing up to 300,000 tonnes to pass through the Northern Sea Route in any season. Russia launched the world’s biggest icebreaker, the Arktika, in June. The icebreaker is powered by two nuclear reactors and can break through 4-meter-deep ice. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Beluga Whales by the Solovetsky Island, White Sea, Russia

02:07
Apparently beluga whales gather every summer to the White Sea near the Solovetsky island. Just a few tens of meters from the shoreline there's a sandy bottom they like to scratch their skin while socialising. The darker ones are youngsters, the white ones mature females. The males keep further away. Some of the whale sounds are audible here and there: high screeches (different from birds') and low farty sounds. Filmed the 1st of July 2014 with a DSLR camera, a 18--250 mm zoom lens and a 2× tele converter.

Troubled waters: Ukraine to declare martial law after sea clash with Russia

The military forces of Ukraine are combat ready after the country's national security council voted to impose martial law. It comes in response to Moscow detaining three Ukrainian naval ships on Sunday off the coast of Crimea. Russia's Federal Security Service claims the ships illegally entered Russia's territorial waters, where they carried out 'dangerous manoeuvres'. Why Ukraine is trapped in endless conflict

04:25
The ceasefire is completely ignored. Correction: In a previous version, the Russian Empire at 2:31 did not include Finland and northern Kazakhstan and at 2:34 the map mistakenly depicted the Warsaw Pact members, not the Soviet Union. At 2:03 the Minsk II agreement refers to the separatist enclaves as "certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine" not the DPR and LPR. Today, there are 100,000 fighters stationed in the country, making it one of the most heavily militarized regions in the world. In Ukraine's east, Ukrainian forces are engaged in a struggle with Russian-backed separatists. A ceasefire was called in 2015, with a security zone established that was meant to foster peace. However, today the security zone remains one of the most violent places in the Ukraine. With over 10,000 deaths to date, and over 1.5 million civilians displaced, the cost of ignoring the ceasefire continues to mount by the day. And both sides are still building up their forces. Russia-Ukraine Tensions: Moscow's 'blockade' of Sea of Azov angers Kiev

02:37
For four years government forces and Kremlin-backed rebels have been fighting in eastern Ukraine. Now, Russia is being accused of trying to blockade the country. It's had an impact on the Ukrainian ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk, where earnings have fallen by almost a quarter in the first seven months of 2018, compared to last year. Along with Kiev, the European Union and the United States say the strategy is part of Moscow's military expansion in the Sea of Azov. And many are concerned the tensions could escalate. Sailors injured as Russia attacks and seizes Ukrainian ships in Black Sea

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://sc.mp/subscribe-youtube Ukraine accused Russia of “an act of aggression” on Sunday, November 25, as Russia’s border guards reportedly opened fire on and seized three of its vessels and wounded at least three crew members in the Black Sea. The three Ukrainian naval ships were heading for the port of Mariupol in the Sea of Azov. Amid heightened tension between the countries Russia had shut off access to the Sea of Azov from the Black Sea, and accused Ukraine of entering its territorial waters without permission. The European Union and NATO have urged both sides to show restraint and “de-escalate the situation immediately” and the UN Security Council was to meet Monday to discuss the situation.

Tensions in Black Sea As Russian and Ukrainian Ships Clash Near Strategic Bridge

05:15
MOSCOW (AP) — Russia and Ukraine traded accusations over an incident at sea Sunday near the disputed Crimean Peninsula, increasing tensions between both countries and prompting Moscow to block passage through the Kerch Strait. Russia’s coast guard said that three Ukrainian navy ships made an unauthorized crossing through Russian territorial waters, while Ukraine alleged that one of its boats was rammed by a Russian coast guard vessel. The Kerch Strait is a narrow body of water nestled between Crimea and the Russian mainland. The incident began after the Ukrainian navy claimed a Russian coast guard vessel rammed one of its tugboats, which was traveling with two Ukrainian navy artillery boats from Odessa on the Black Sea to Mariupol in the Sea of Azov, via the Kerch Strait. “Russian coast guard vessels … carried out openly aggressive actions against Ukrainian navy ships,” the Ukrainian navy statement said. It said a Russian coast guard ship damaged the tugboat’s engine, hull, side railing and a lifeboat. The statement added that Russia had been informed in advance about the planned journey. Russia then blocked off the strait. The move comes after months of growing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, which annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and has steadily worked to increase its zone of control around the peninsula. The Kerch Strait is the only passage into the Sea of Azov beyond it. The strait is crossed by the recently completed Kerch Bridge, connecting Crimea to Russia. Transit under the bridge has been blocked by a tanker ship, and dozens of cargo ships awaiting passage are stuck. Russia has not given any indication of how long it will keep the strait blocked off, but a long-term closure to civilian traffic would amount to an economic blockade of Ukrainian cities on the Azov coast. And Russia’s Black Sea Fleet greatly outmatches the Ukrainian navy. Ukrainian cities on the Sea of Azov include strategically vital centers such as Mariupol — the closest government-controlled city to Donetsk and Luhansk, the breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine controlled by Russia-backed separatists. Russia’s Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, told Russian news agencies Sunday that the Ukrainian ships held their course and violated Russian territorial waters. The FSB accused the Ukrainian navy of staging a provocation against Russia. “Their goal is clear,” an FSB statement said — “to create a conflict situation in the region.” The statement didn’t mention ramming a Ukrainian tugboat. Though a 2003 treaty designates the Kerch Strait and Sea of Azov as shared territorial waters, Russia has been asserting greater control over the passage since 2015. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Russia’s actions were a violation of the U.N. Charter and international law, and pledged to “promptly inform our partners about Russia’s aggressive actions.” “Such actions pose a threat to the security of all states in the Black Sea region,” the statement said, “and therefore require a clear response from the international community.” Dmitry Kiselyov, a commentator on the state-controlled Rossiya channel, told viewers of his Sunday evening news program that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko — encouraged by the U.S. — is looking to pick a fight with Russia in the Black Sea. The talk show host also said that the U.S. talked Poroshenko into staging a provocation against Russia as a means to disrupt the upcoming meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump at this week’s Group of 20 summit in Argentina. “What is happening now at the (Kerch) bridge threatens to turn into a very unpleasant story,” Kiselyov warned. http://bit.ly/2Bwy0hF Subscribe To The New Channel: https://www.youtube.com/POTUSTrumpKAG ✝ Please Donate Just $1 A Month. Covert Arms Operations at Sea Unveiled (2010)

Ghost Ship (2010): It was a bizarre story of international espionage and intrigue; a missing Maltese ship, the Russian Navy, Israeli commandos dressed as Swedish officials, Iranian missiles. But now the real story of the Arctic Sea is finally emerging. So why two days later was it boarded by men dressed as Swedish police? "We can be sure that these were commandos, and we can be sure, well practically sure, that these were Israeli commandos". And why when the ship went missing was it pursued by the Russian Navy? "These guys were delivering Russian arms. Who was exactly in charge, we don't know". It now appears that all of these covert operations are part of an international gun-running operation. The Arctic Sea was in fact delivering defence missiles to Iran and was boarded by Israeli commandos in an attempt to stop the sale. Both governments have denied the allegations of intrigue; indeed Russia has accused several Russians of piracy. One of whom has now been convicted, though this story has not convinced many, "Have you seen Malpis, pirates from Malpis? No". Along with Russian strong-arming of Malta and heated exchanges between Russia and Israel there are stories here which Russia would prefer to keep quiet. Aral Sea: The sea that dried up in 40 years - BBC News

05:47
Subscribe to BBC News www.youtube.com/bbcnews The disappearance of the Aral Sea in Central Asia is one of the world's greatest man-made disasters. In Kazakhstan, with the help of the World Bank, more than $80million have been spent trying to save the most northern part of the sea but this has only benefited a few hundred people. In this film, we speak to people still living in deserted fishing ports, to see how their lives have changed, and to find out whether they believe that they'll ever see the sea again. About the Soviet Navy: The Soviet Navy (Russian: Военно-морской флот СССР / ВМФ, literally "Military Maritime Fleet of the USSR") was the naval arm of the Soviet Armed Forces. Often referred to as the Red Fleet, the Soviet Navy was a large part of the Soviet Union's strategic plan in an incident with the United States, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), or another incident related to the Warsaw Pact. The influence of the Soviet Navy played a large role in the Soviet-American rivalry, as the majority of events centered around naval forces. The Soviet Navy was divided into four major fleets: the Northern, Pacific, Black Sea, and Baltic Fleets; under separate command was the Leningrad Naval Base (today Saint Petersburg). The Caspian Flotilla was a smaller force operating in the land-locked Caspian Sea. Main components of the Soviet Navy included Soviet Naval Aviation, Naval Infantry (Soviet Marines), and Coastal Artillery. Most of the Soviet Navy was reformed into the present Russian Navy (Russian: Военно-морской Флот Российской Федерации / ВМФ России, literally Military-Maritime Fleet of the Russian Federation) after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. About the Soviet Union: The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Russian: Сою́з Сове́тских Социалисти́ческих Респу́блик) abbreviated to USSR (Russian: СССР) or shortened to the Soviet Union (Russian: Сове́тский Сою́з), was a Marxist–Leninist state on the Eurasian continent that existed between 1922 and 1991. A union of multiple subnational Soviet republics, its government and economy were highly centralized. The Soviet Union was a one-party state, governed by the Communist Party with Moscow as its capital. Rise of the Soviet Navy | History of the Russian Sea Power | 1900-1970 | Documentary in Color

Russian Navy's Deadly Plan to Defend the Black Sea, Against US, Nato, Ukrainian Naval Formations

11:46
Russia's Deadly Plan to Defend the Black Sea Against US, Nato, Ukrainian Naval Formations As the State Armament Program (S A P) 2011 to 2020 is coming to an end, Moscow has floated a new military program for the 2018 to 2027 period. Despite the sanctions, economic difficulties and the collapse of oil revenues, the Russian Navy has demonstrated that it can contribute to Russia’s international posture, as demonstrated during the Moscow’s Syrian campaign. Among the five Russian naval formations—namely the Northern, Baltic, Black Sea, and Pacific fleets as well the Caspian flotilla—the Black Sea fleet has undergone the most remarkable changes since 2010. Although modest by their number and their tonnage, its units are involved in operations in the Black Sea basin, the Mediterranean, and more sporadically, beyond the Suez Canal and the Gibraltar Straits, in the “World Ocean.” New platforms inducted in the course of the 2011 to 2020 S A P have provided the Black Sea fleet with enhanced multirole capabilities, in spite of difficulties experienced by the VPK—the Russian military-industrial complex—to meet the objectives outlined in the armament program. While the Black Sea Fleet is inexorably transitioning to a green-water force, it features a growing ability to carry out cruise-missile strikes way beyond Russia’s immediate neighborhood. Furthermore, it retains the ability to operate in remote maritime areas, such as the Levant. Revamping the Black Sea Fleet: Half a Success The modernization plan of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet outlined in the 2011 to 2020 S A P has not been fulfilled as originally thought. However, it has already produced tangible results, the first of which being the end of the continuing attrition of the operational capacities that affected the Russian navy during the 1990s and most of the 2000s. However, the Euro-Atlantic sanctions, on the one hand, and the rupture of the cooperation between the Russian VPK and Western and Ukrainian defense industries, on the other hand, have jeopardized the construction of some platforms, while delaying the completion of other new units. From the six initially planned frigates (Admiral Grigorovicth type), only three have been commissioned, whereas the three others have been left without their Ukrainian made turbines. Russia is waiting for Saturn—a Russian company based in Rybinsk—to come up with a national replacement solution, something that could be done in 2018. small missiles ships and anti-saboteur boats received until 2014 their German made engines, manufactured by MTU. Russian VPK have had to turn to China after the Ukrainian crisis to find a replacement solution after Germany ceased its cooperation with Russia. Chinese turbines are problematic, since the they do not seem powerful enough. Only the five first units have received their German turbines. Three of them have been assigned to the Caspian flotilla, which is regrouped together with the Black Sea Fleet in the Southern Military District. The two other missiles ships have been transferred to the Baltic Fleet. Russia’s objectives to enhance its submarine capabilities in the Black Sea have been met successfully; the six planned conventional submarines have all been inducted in the fleet. They carry Kalibar cruise missiles, and together with the new frigates and small missiles ships, they have carried out cruise missiles strikes in Syria from the Eastern Mediterranean. Dispatched in the Levant and in the Black Sea basin, these platforms can hit targets in most of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and parts of Central Asia. Acknowledging the technical and financial difficulties raised by the sanctions and the cessation of industrial cooperation with foreign actors, Russia decided in 2014 to 2015 to launch two new construction programs for the Black Sea Fleet: small missiles ships and small patrol boats. Kalibar cruise missiles while being a very light surface platform at only 800 tons. Seven units have already been laid down, all slated for the Black Sea Fleet, with the lead ship scheduled to be commissioned in 2018. Meanwhile, the Black Sea Fleet’s only high sea vessel, the Soviet-era missiles cruiser Moskva , should undergo a reparation and deep-modernization cycle in the near future, possibly at Sevastopol shipyard. The S A P 2011 to 2020 does not include any refreshment, let alone expansion, of the blue water capacities of the Russian navy at all. subscribe : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9IFRHTtYJFjhI5fBrLIJiQ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DNA997

Venice and the Ottoman Empire: Crash Course World History #19

10:12
In which John Green discusses the strange and mutually beneficial relationship between a republic, the citystate of Venice, and an Empire, the Ottomans--and how studying history can help you to be a better boyfriend and/or girlfriend. Together, the Ottoman Empire and Venice grew wealthy by facilitating trade: The Venetians had ships and nautical expertise; the Ottomans had access to many of the most valuable goods in the world, especially pepper and grain. Working together across cultural and religious divides, they both become very rich, and the Ottomans became one of the most powerful political entities in the world. We also discuss how economic realities can overcome religious and political differences (in this case between Muslims and Christians), the doges of Venice, the sultans of the Ottoman empire, the janissaries and so-called slave aristocracy of the Ottoman Empire, and how money and knowledge from the Islamic world helped fuel and fund the European Renaissance. Also, there's a They Might Be Giants joke. If you really want to read about Ottoman eunuchs (warning: it's explicit), here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunuch#Ottoman_Empire Crash Course World History is now available on DVD! http://store.dftba.com/products/crashcourse-world-history-the-complete-series-dvd-set Follow us! @thecrashcourse @realjohngreen @raoulmeyer @crashcoursestan @saysdanica @thoughtbubbler Like us! ‪http://www.facebook.com/youtubecrashcourse Follow us again! ‪http://thecrashcourse.tumblr.com Support CrashCourse on Patreon: http://patreon.com/crashcourse
