Check if Value is Numeric by using ISNUMERIC & TRY_Convert Function in SQL Server - TSQL Tutorial

13:38
How to Determine if value is Numeric by using ISNumeric and Try_Convert Function in SQL Server - TSQL Tutorial ISNUMERIC( ) function is provided to us in SQL Server to check if the expression is valid numeric type or not. As per Microsoft it should work with Integers and Decimal data types and if data is valid integer or decimal, ISNumeric() should return us 1 else 0. But ISNUMERIC() does not work as expected with some of values specially when we have "-" or "d" in value and have two numbers after "d" such as 123d22, it still return us 1. Also if we have data in money format $XXXXX e.g $2000, It returns us 1. In SQL Server 2012. Microsoft introduced new function call Try_Convert( ). You can use try_convert function to convert to required data type and if it is not able to convert then it will return Null as output. As you will see below, I did some experiment and found out that Try_Convert will produce 0 for "-" when we try to convert to Int, That should not be happening as "-" is symbol not Integer. But when I try to convert "-" to decimal, Try_Convert produced Null output. Take a look in below results and keep in mind the outputs when you have to evaluate expression to Numeric or find out if expression is Numeric or Not. "ORA-06502: numeric or value error" is one of the most commonly occurring and irritating errors for PL/SQL developers. Value too big for its "container"? Trying to stuff a non-numeric string value into a number through implicit conversion? [naughty naughty] In this video, Steven takes a close look at ORA-06502, exploring the ways it can be raised and how best to deal with those scenarios. ============================ Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2014/06/part-7-sql-query-to-find-rows-that_13.html Let me explain the scenario mentioned in one of the sql server interview. We have the following table. ID Value 1 123 2 ABC 3 DEF 4 901 5 JKL Write a SQL query to retrieve rows that contain only numerical data. SQL Script to create the TestTable Create Table TestTable ( ID int identity primary key, Value nvarchar(50) ) Insert into TestTable values ('123') Insert into TestTable values ('ABC') Insert into TestTable values ('DEF') Insert into TestTable values ('901') Insert into TestTable values ('JKL') This is very easy to achieve. If you have used ISNUMERIC() function in SQL Server, then you already know the answer. Here is the query SELECT Value FROM TestTable WHERE ISNUMERIC(Value) = 1 ISNUMERIC function returns 1 when the input expression evaluates to a valid numeric data type, otherwise it returns 0. For the list of all valid numeric data types in SQL Server please visit the following MSDN link. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186272(v=sql.110).aspx

GROUPING ID function in SQL Server

12:38
grouping_id function in sql server 2008 grouping_id in sql server 2008 example sql server grouping level In this video we will discuss 1. GROUPING_ID function in SQL Server 2. Difference between GROUPING and GROUPING_ID functions 3. Use of GROUPING_ID function GROUPING_ID function computes the level of grouping. Difference between GROUPING and GROUPING_ID Syntax : GROUPING function is used on single column, where as the column list for GROUPING_ID function must match with GROUP BY column list. GROUPING(Col1) GROUPING_ID(Col1, Col2, Col3,...) GROUPING indicates whether the column in a GROUP BY list is aggregated or not. Grouping returns 1 for aggregated or 0 for not aggregated in the result set. GROUPING_ID() function concatenates all the GOUPING() functions, perform the binary to decimal conversion, and returns the equivalent integer. In short GROUPING_ID (A, B, C) = GROUPING(A) + GROUPING(B) + GROUPING(C) Let us understand this with an example. SELECT Continent, Country, City, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales, CAST(GROUPING(Continent) AS NVARCHAR(1)) + CAST(GROUPING(Country) AS NVARCHAR(1)) + CAST(GROUPING(City) AS NVARCHAR(1)) AS Groupings, GROUPING_ID(Continent, Country, City) AS GPID FROM Sales GROUP BY ROLLUP(Continent, Country, City) Row Number 1 : Since the data is not aggregated by any column GROUPING(Continent), GROUPING(Country) and GROUPING(City) return 0 and as result we get a binar string with all ZEROS (000). When this converted to decimal we get 0 which is displayed in GPID column. Row Number 7 : The data is aggregated for Country and City columns, so GROUPING(Country) and GROUPING(City) return 1 where as GROUPING(Continent) return 0. As result we get a binar string (011). When this converted to decimal we get 10 which is displayed in GPID column. Row Number 15 : This is the Grand total row. Notice in this row the data is aggregated by all the 3 columns. Hence all the 3 GROUPING functions return 1. So we get a binary string with all ONES (111). When this converted to decimal we get 7 which is displayed in GPID column. Use of GROUPING_ID function : GROUPING_ID function is very handy if you want to sort and filter by level of grouping. Sorting by level of grouping : SELECT Continent, Country, City, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales, GROUPING_ID(Continent, Country, City) AS GPID FROM Sales GROUP BY ROLLUP(Continent, Country, City) ORDER BY GPID Filter by level of grouping : The following query retrieves only continent level aggregated data SELECT Continent, Country, City, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales, GROUPING_ID(Continent, Country, City) AS GPID FROM Sales GROUP BY ROLLUP(Continent, Country, City) HAVING GROUPING_ID(Continent, Country, City) = 3 Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/groupingid-function-in-sql-server.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/groupingid-function-in-sql-server_27.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

How to Concatenate String Values with Integer values in SQL Server - TSQL Tutorial

10:23
How to Concatenate String and Integer Values in SQL Server ( + Sign vs CONCAT ) - TSQL Tutorial Working with Databases is fun. On daily basis we save data into tables in different columns and often we need to write queries which involve concatenation of multiple columns of different datatypes to produce our final output. In below example we have saved some data into #Customer Table which has Street Address column as string and zip as INT. we want to produce Full Address by concatenating these columns. To concatenate we can use + sign but this works only with String values. So if we have any Integer value/s we have to convert them to String first. We can use Cast or Convert function to convert Integer value to string. Also if there is any Null value among which values we are concatenating , our output will be Null by using + sign. To take care of that part we can use either ISNULL() or Coalesce Function to replace NULL with blank value in SQL Server. In SQL Server 2012 and Later versions, CONCAT function was introduced. You can concatenate multiple values by using this function. Fun part of this function is you don't have to worry about Null outcome as it will Ignore Null values and also you don't have to worry about converting INT into strings, It will take care of that automatically. So if you are using new versions such as 2012 or later, start taking advantage of this function. SQL String Functions PART -- 2

21:01
sql String functions are used in computer programming languages to manipulate a string or query information about a string (some do both). ... The most basic example of a string function is the length(string) function. This function returns the length of a string literal.Scalar-valued UDFs are an easy way to define constant values to use in your database environment. You can pass field values as parameters into UDFs. You can nest scalar function calls. This means that you can pass a call to a scalar-valued function to another function or stored procedure.Numeric functions perform manipulation of numbers that normally are contained in a table column. ... Returns a numeric value, rounded to the specified length or precision. SIGN() SQL server, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL. Returns the positive (+1), zero (0), or negative (-1) sign of a numeric expression.A stored function (also called a user function or user-defined function) is a set of PL/SQL statements you can call by name. Stored functions are very similar to procedures, except that a function returns a value to the environment in which it is called. User functions can be used as part of a SQL expression.Function must return a value but in Stored Procedure it is optional( Procedure can return zero or n values). Functions can have only input parameters for it whereas Procedures can have input/output parameters . ... Functions can be called from Procedure whereas Procedures cannot be called from Function,The CTE was introduced into standard SQL in order to simplify various classes of SQL Queries for which a derived table just wasn't suitable. ... Introduced in SQL Server 2005, the common table expression (CTE) is a temporary named result set that you can reference within a SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE statement. The isDate(string, string) function accepts two string arguments. It takes them, compares the first argument with the second as a pattern and, if the first string can be converted to a date which is valid within system value of locale , according to the specified pattern , the function returns true.printf does the same, treating %s as a pointer-to-string. In C, variables that are arrays become a pointer to the first element of the array when used as function arguments -- so your scanf() sees a pointer to memory (assuming "str1" is an array). SQL - Useful Functions SQL COUNT Function - The SQL COUNT aggregate function is used to count the number of rows in a database table. SQL MAX Function - The SQL MAX aggregate function allows us to select the highest (maximum) value for a certain column. More items... SQL has many built-in functions for performing processing on string or numeric data. Following is the list of all useful SQL built-in functions − SQL COUNT Function - The SQL COUNT aggregate function is used to count the number of rows in a database table. SQL MAX Function - The SQL MAX aggregate function allows us to select the highest (maximum) value for a certain column. SQL MIN Function - The SQL MIN aggregate function allows us to select the lowest (minimum) value for a certain column. SQL - The SQL AVG aggregate function selects the average value for certain table column. SQL SUM Function - The SQL SUM aggregate function allows selecting the total for a numeric column. SQL SQRT Functions - This is used to generate a square root of a given number. SQL RAND Function - This is used to generate a random number using SQL command. SQL CONCAT Function - This is used to concatenate any string inside any SQL command. SQL Numeric Functions - Complete list of SQL functions required to manipulate numbers in SQL. SQL String Functions - Complete list of SQL functions required to manipulate strings in SQL. Returns a Unicode string with the delimiters added to make the input string a valid SQL Server delimited identifier. REPLACE. Replaces a sequence of characters in a string with another set of characters. REPLICATE. Repeats a string value a specified number of times.SQL. Character Functions with Examples. Character functions accept character inputs and can return either characters or number values as output. SQL provides a number of different character datatypes which includes – CHAR, VARCHAR, VARCHAR2, LONG, RAW, and LONG RAW.Aggregate Functions: Aggregates the values and return a single value, below is the list of some aggregate values in sql server. These functions are created by user in the system database, and we have 3 types of user define functions: Scalar Function. Inline Table-Valued Function.

MySQL 31 - DECIMAL Data Type

02:20
The DECIMAL data type is similar to the INT data type in that when you use the number for math, it maintains precision. The difference though is obvious in the name. The DECIMAL data type allows for numbers after a decimal point (and before the decimal point). The DECIMAL data type allows us to store what is known as a fixed-point number. A fixed point number is a number that has a specific number of digits available to store numbers in. That means we can't do things like use a DECIMAL data type to store as many digits of PI as possible, because we can't store unlimited digits. We are limited to a certain number. There are two keywords you need to understand when you are working with the DECIMAL data type, precision and scale. Precision is the number of digits and scale is the number of those digits that will come after the radix. You are going to want to provide these numbers when you declare a column of this data type. For example, DECIMAL(5, 2) has a precision of 5 digits and a scale of 2 digits. That means we can store a maximum of two digits after the decimal and four digits total. This gives us a possible range from -999.99 to 999.99 The highest number of digits is 65, and the highest number of digits after the decimal is 30. This data type is also known as DEC, NUMERIC, and FIXED. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Support me! http://www.patreon.com/calebcurry Subscribe to my newsletter: http://bit.ly/JoinCCNewsletter Donate!: http://bit.ly/DonateCTVM2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Additional Links~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More content: http://CalebCurry.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CalebTheVideoMaker Google+: https://plus.google.com/+CalebTheVideoMaker2 Twitter: http://twitter.com/calebCurry Amazing Web Hosting - http://bit.ly/ccbluehost (The best web hosting for a cheap price!)

Get Decimal/Float output from Integer Division in SQL Server - SQL Server Tutorial

02:47
In this video we will learn how to get decimal/float output from Integer division in SQL Server. I am creating this video to answer once of the question that I posted while back for TSQL Interview Question list "If I run Select 100/11 what output will I get?" When you divide Integer by an Integer in SQL Server, SQL Server returns Integer output. As we can see from our above example, SQL Server output is Integer for Integers division. If we want to get float or Decimal output, Either our denominator or Numerator should be float or decimal type. If we have both denominator or numerator as Integers, we can use convert or cast functions to convert one of them to float/decimal so we can get our results as float/decimal. There are multiple techniques you can use to convert/cast to integer to float/decimal, here are some examples SELECT CAST(100 AS FLOAT) /11 AS OutputResult SELECT 100/CAST(11 AS FLOAT) AS OutputResult SELECT 100/CAST(11 AS DECIMAL(12,0)) AS OutputResult SELECT CAST(100 AS DECIMAL(12,0))/11 AS OutputResult Blog post link with scripts used in the video http://sqlage.blogspot.com/2015/02/how-to-get-decimail-output-from.html

This function is very useful when you want to quote object names. Please use the SQL Script to create the table used in the example from my blog using the link below http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2017/04/quotename-function-in-sql-server.html Let us say, we are using dynamic SQL to build our SELECT query as shown below Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Declare @tableName nvarchar(50) Set @tableName = 'USA Customers' Set @sql = 'Select * from ' + @tableName Execute sp_executesql @sql When we execute the above script, we get the following error Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Invalid object name 'USA'. The query that our dynamic sql generates and executes is as shown below. To see the generate SQL statement, use Print @sql. Select * from USA Customers Since there is a space in the table name, it has to be wrapped in brackes as shown below Select * from [USA Customers] One way to fix this is by including the brackets in @tableName variable as shown below Set @tableName = '[USA Customers]' The other way to fix this is by including the brackets in @sql variable as shown below Set @sql = 'Select * from [' + @tableName +']' While both of the above methods give the result we want, it is extremely dangerous because it open doors for sql injection. If we set the brackets in @tableName variable, sql can be injected as shown below and SalesDB database is dropped Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Declare @tableName nvarchar(50) Set @tableName = '[USA Customers] Drop Database SalesDB' Set @sql = 'Select * from ' + @tableName Execute sp_executesql @sql If we set the brackets in @sql variable, sql can be injected as shown below and SalesDB database is dropped Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Declare @tableName nvarchar(50) Set @tableName = 'USA Customers] Drop Database SalesDB --' Set @sql = 'Select * from [' + @tableName +']' Execute sp_executesql @sql So, the right way to do this is by using QUOTENAME() function as shown below. Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Declare @tableName nvarchar(50) Set @tableName = 'USA Customers Drop Database SalesDB --' Set @sql = 'Select * from ' + QUOTENAME(@tableName) Execute sp_executesql @sql When we execute the above script we get the following error. SalesDB database is not dropped. The reason we get this error is because we do not have a table with name - [USA Customers Drop Database SalesDB --]. To see the sql statement use PRINT @sql. Invalid object name 'USA Customers Drop Database SalesDB --'. If we set @tableName = 'USA Customers', the query executes successfully, without the threat of SQL injection. Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Declare @tableName nvarchar(50) Set @tableName = 'USA Customers' Set @sql = 'Select * from ' + QUOTENAME(@tableName) Execute sp_executesql @sql If you want to use sql server schema name "dbo" along with the table name, then you should not use QUOTENAME function as shown below. Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Declare @tableName nvarchar(50) Set @tableName = 'dbo.USA Customers' Set @sql = 'Select * from ' + QUOTENAME(@tableName) Execute sp_executesql @sql The above query produces the following error Invalid object name 'dbo.USA Customers' Instead use QUOTENAME function as shown below Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Declare @tableName nvarchar(50) Set @tableName = 'USA Customers' Set @sql = 'Select * from ' + QUOTENAME('dbo') + '.' + QUOTENAME(@tableName) Execute sp_executesql @sql QUOTENAME() function Takes two parameters - the first is a string, and the second is a delimiter that you want SQL server to use to wrap the string in. The delimiter can be a left or right bracket ( [] ), a single quotation mark ( ' ), or a double quotation mark ( " ) The default for the second parameter is [] QUOTENAME() function examples SELECT QUOTENAME('USA Customers','"') returns "USA Customers" SELECT QUOTENAME('USA Customers','''') returns 'USA Customers' All the following statements return [USA Customers] SELECT QUOTENAME('USA Customers') SELECT QUOTENAME('USA Customers','[') SELECT QUOTENAME('USA Customers',']') If you use a delimiter other than a single quotation mark, double quotation mark, left bracket or a right bracket, you get NULL. The following statement returns NULL. SELECT QUOTENAME('USA Customers','*')

How to Add Column To Existing SQL Server Table with Default Constrain - SQL Server Tutorial

11:15
How to Add a Column with Values to Existing SQL Server Table - TSQL Tutorial / SQL Server Tutorial We often have to add a new column to existing Table/s. Let's consider we have dbo.Customer table and we are US based company and we never did business outside USA. so we never need Country Column to our existing Table for Address as we only operator in USA. Now company has decided to expand the business and might have the customers from other countries. What we want to do , we want to add column to existing table with default value. All the existing values should be also updated to default value when we add this new column. Moving forward if no Country Name provided, It should take USA otherwise value provided. blog post link for script http://sqlage.blogspot.com/2015/03/how-to-add-column-with-values-to.html

How to Find if Table/View is used by Stored Procedure in SQL Server - SQL Server Interview Questions

06:44
In this video, we are going to learn how to find out if the table is used in a Stored Procedure. we have multiple ways to do that. This System Stored Procedure will return you list of table/views used by the Stored procedure/View. You can pass the view name or Stored Procedure as parameter,it will return you tables/views which are used in the object. One disadvantage of using sp_depends is , it will not show you tables/views which are not in current database. If you have used objects from other databases, this information might be misleading. --By using sp_depends, You can provide Stored Procedure Name or View name as parameter EXEC sp_depends '[dbo].[GetCustomer]' The 2nd method is to use the sys.sysdepends view with combination of sys.sysobjects to get the information. This also works the same way. It will not show you cross database objects ( Tables,Views) if have used in Stored Procedure or view definition. --Get Information from sys.sysdepends SELECT DISTINCT OBJECT_NAME(SD.id) AS StoredProcedureNameName, OB.name AS TableOrViewName FROM sys.sysdepends SDINNER JOIN sys.sysobjects O ON SD.id=O.id INNER JOIN sys.sysobjects OB ON SD.depid=OB.id AND O.xtype='P' 3rd method is to use the sys.all_sql_modules system view. The definition column of this view has definition of Stored Procedure, Views, Functions etc.You can write query as given below to check if any of the Stored Procedure or object is using the table/view you are looking for. --Use sys.all_sql_modules system view to get information if table is used --in a Stored Procedure SELECT OBJECT_NAME(OBJECT_ID),definition FROM sys.all_sql_modules WHERE definition LIKE '%vw_Employee%' Link to post: http://sqlage.blogspot.com/2015/02/how-to-find-if-tableview-is-used-in.html

IIF function in SQL Server

04:00
iif function in sql server 2012 iif function in sql server example sql server iif function example In this video we will discuss IIF function in SQL Server. IIF function Introduced in SQL Server 2012 Returns one of two the values, depending on whether the Boolean expression evaluates to true or false IIF is a shorthand way for writing a CASE expression Syntax : IIF ( boolean_expression, true_value, false_value ) Example : Returns Male as the boolean expression evaluates to TRUE DECLARE @Gender INT SET @Gender = 1 SELECT IIF( @Gender = 1, 'Male', 'Femlae') AS Gender Example : Using IIF() function with table data. We will use the following Employees table for this example. SQL Script to create Employees table Create table Employees ( Id int primary key identity, Name nvarchar(10), GenderId int ) Go Insert into Employees values ('Mark', 1) Insert into Employees values ('John', 1) Insert into Employees values ('Amy', 2) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', 1) Insert into Employees values ('Sara', 2) Insert into Employees values ('David', 1) Go Write a query to display Gender along with employee Name and GenderId. We can achieve this either by using CASE or IIF. Using CASE statement SELECT Name, GenderId, CASE WHEN GenderId = 1 THEN 'Male' ELSE 'Female' END AS Gender FROM Employees Using IIF function SELECT Name, GenderId, IIF(GenderId = 1, 'Male', 'Female') AS Gender FROM Employees Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/iif-function-in-sql-server.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/iif-function-in-sql-server_14.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

SQL Server 2008 - Merge TSQL Statement

08:48
Full Detailed Article for "Merge TSQL Statement" is available at : http://sqlserver-training.com/sql-server-2008-merge-statement-video-tutorial Follow us at more Updates at ----------------------------------------- Website : http://sqlserver-training.com/ Twitter : http://twitter.com/dbatag/ Facebook : http://facebook.com/dbatag/ Linked In : http://in.linkedin.com/in/dbatag/ ================================ MERGE is a new DML statement in SQL Server 2008. MERGE allows you to perform simultaneous UPDATE, INSERT and/or DELETE operations on one table. There are new physical operators that combine these operations so that they can be performed in a single scan rather than multiple scans. Microsoft have implemented the ISO SQL 2003 and 2007 standard MERGE statement (as seen in Oracle and DB2) and added some extensions of their own. Below are the three different matched clauses in MERGE: WHEN MATCHED THEN Rows that meet the criteria WHEN [TARGET] NOT MATCHED THEN Rows that do not match with another row in the target table WHEN SOURCE NOT MATCHED THEN Rows that do not match with another row in the source table In summary, SQL Server 2008 introduces the MERGE statement which will allow users to perform insert, update and delete operations in a single statement.
