Oda Lindholm is an historian, writer and a journalist. She started her carrier as a journalist at the age of 19, when she started writing for the free magazine called Natt&Dag. At the age of 23, she was a journalist at Dagsavisen, and responsible for the columns about culture, politics and readers’ comments section. At the age of 26, she published her first book, «Bullshitfiltert», and has been nominated to a prestigious literary award, «Brageprisen». In other words, mass communication refers to the imparting and exchanging of information on a large scale to a wide range of people. It is usually understood to relate newspaper, magazine, and book publishing, as well as radio, television and film, even via internet as these mediums are used for disseminating information, news and advertising. Mass communication differs from the studies of other forms of communication, such as interpersonal communication or organizational communication, in that it focuses on a single source transmitting information to a large number of receivers. The study of mass communication is chiefly concerned with how the content of mass communication persuades or otherwise affects the behavior, attitude, opinion, or emotion of the person or people receiving the information. Mass communication is "the process by which a person, group of people, or organization creates a message and transmits it through some type of medium to a large, anonymous, heterogeneous audience." This implies that the audience of mass communication are mostly made up of different cultures, behavior and belief systems. Mass communication is regularly associated with media influence or media effects, and media studies. Mass communication is a branch of social science that falls under the larger umbrella of communication studies of communication The history of communication stretches from prehistoric forms of art and writing through modern communication methods such as the Internet. Mass communication began when humans could transmit messages from a single source to multiple receivers. Mass communication has moved from theories such as the hypodermic needle model (or magic bullet theory) through more modern theories such as computer-mediated communication. In the United States, the study of mass communication is often associated with the practical applications of journalism (Print media), television and radio broadcasting, film, public relations, or advertising. With the diversification of media options, the study of communication has extended to include social media and new media, which have stronger feedback models than traditional media sources. While the field of mass communication is continually evolving, the following four fields are generally considered the major areas of study within mass communication. They exist in different forms and configurations at different schools or universities, but are (in some form) practiced at most institutions that study mass communicatin Advertising, in relation to mass communication, refers to marketing a product or service in a persuasive manner that encourages the audience to buy the product or use the service. Because advertising generally takes place through some form of mass media, such as television, studying the effects and methods of advertising is relevant to the study of mass communication. Advertising is the paid, impersonal, one-way marketing of persuasive information from a sponsor. Through mass communication channels, the sponsor promotes the adoption of goods, services or ideas. Kathy R. Fitzpatrick is professor and former senior associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Communication. She is also a faculty fellow in the Center on Public Diplomacy in the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California, where she formerly served as a research fellow. Prior to coming to American University, Fitzpatrick was professor and associate dean for graduate programs and research in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University. She also served on the faculties and directed graduate and undergraduate programs in public relations at Southern Methodist University, the University of Florida, DePaul University and Quinnipiac University. Fitzpatrick is an internationally-recognized scholar in public relations and public diplomacy. Her books and monographs include U.S. Public Diplomacy in a Post-9/11 World: From Messaging to Mutuality, The Future of U.S. Public Diplomacy: An Uncertain Fate, U.S. Public Diplomacy’s Neglected Domestic Mandate, Ethics in Public Relations: Responsible Advocacy and Public Relations Ethics. Her research has been published in leading scholarly journals in communications and diplomacy, including The Hague Journal of Diplomacy, the International Journal of Strategic Communications, the Journal of Public Relations Research, the Journal of Advertising, the Journal of Mass Media Ethics, the Journal of Communication Management, Public Relations Review and Public Relations Journal. Fitzpatrick serves as co-editor of the Palgrave Macmillan Book Series on Global Public Diplomacy and serves on the international advisory boards of The Hague Journal of Diplomacy and Public Diplomacy Magazine. She also serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Public Relations Research and the Journal of Mass Media Ethics. Fitzpatrick is a member of the Arthur W. Page Society, whose members are corporate, agency and academic leaders in the field of public relations. She formerly served as head of the Educators Academy of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and is a former president of the Dallas Chapter of PRSA. She also served on the PRSA Board of Ethics and Professional Standards (BEPS) and was a member of the task force that developed the current PRSA Code of Ethics, which is the industry standard. Fitzpatrick is licensed to practice law in Texas and accredited in public relations by the Public Relations Society of America.

812 The Magazine is a project of students at the Indiana University Media School. Each semester, students in J481: Creating an Indiana Magazine produce an issue, supplying all of the reporting, editing, photography and design. “One of my goals is to make it as close as possible to what it might be like to work for a small regional magazine,” explains Nancy Comiskey, course instructor. “My second goal is that when they leave the class, they have a wonderful magazine clip that can be a real highlight for their portfolio.” Students also oversee publication of print copies, which are distributed throughout Southern Indiana. “If you just talked about [creating a magazine] in a class, as opposed to actually sitting down and doing everything, I know I wouldn’t have learned half as much,” says junior Hannah Feace, who served as the spring 2015 editor-in-chief.
