Doris Day Song: It's Magic Movie: Romance on the High Seas Year: 1949 Lyrics: You sigh, the song begins, you speak and I hear violins It's magic The stars desert the skies and rush to nestle in your eyes It's magic Without a golden wand or mystic charms Fantastic things begin when I am in your arms When we walk hand-in-hand, the world becomes a wonderland It's magic How else can I explain those rainbows when there isn't rain? It's magic Why do I tell me myself these things that happen are all really true When in my heart I know the magic is my love for you?

It's Magic (Styne-Cahn) by Doris Day, orchestra conducted by George Siravo (CD audio source) Though her lovely singing voice had helped sell a couple million records during her years with the Les Brown band, it was her star-making feature film acting debut in "Romance On The High Seas" that really set the Doris Day career into high gear. Helping things along was the Sammy Cahn-Jule Styne ballad that she sang in the movie...and recorded in this #2 best-selling single for Columbia. In addition to this original hit version, her dramatic 1952 remake of "It's Magic," lushly arranged by Percy Faith, was commonly reissued over the years. Tony Martin, Dick Haymes, Sarah Vaughan and Gordon MacRae's top-20 versions of this Oscar-nominated tune are also included in the 1948 collection. Though Ms. Day is about 90 now, sadly both of her co-stars here have left us. Both Jack Carson and wonderful singer/actor/composer Nestor Amaral died very young. Talent like theirs is irreplaceable. I'm still fascinated watching their beautiful acting and singing combo. Sad to say that we're not likely to see their equals ever again. Here is the first of the two phone calls our Doris made to Magic 63 his year to celebrate her 85th birthday. I had so much fun hearing her talking about the nasty letter she received from a fan that was angry she didnt answer a letter regarding a present she sent to Doris... And also when Doris said, laughing hard, that she loved the present but didnt like the letter!... (Dodo explanation about why she didnt respond the letter is in this recording, that is already one of my favorite listening materials!).

Following her departure from the Les Brown band, it was this song from her break-out 1948 movie role in “Romance On The High Seas” that established Doris as a major recording star. But quite different from her original 1948 hit version (also available here on the MusicProf78 channel), this lush 1952 Percy Faith arrangement provided a more “modern” setting for a more dramatic Doris Day vocal. I guess the 3rd of April this year had a very special taste of nostalgia to a lot of people all over the world. Doris Day, the talented star of so many delicious comedies, celebrated her 84th birthday on Magic 63 (a radio station in California), close to her fans that called the radio station to congratulate her all day long. It was a real thrill to listen to her sweet and joyful voice, the same voice of the lovely girl I'm used to seeing in pictures such as Calamity Jane and Pillow Talk. Those two most special moments of that day deserve to be shared with everybody, specially the dorisdaytribute.com, who shared with me the information about the broadcasting. Parts 1/4 and 2/4: Doris calls the radio in the morning. Parts 3/4 and 4/4: Doris calls the radio in the afternoon. When all the world Is a hopeless jumble And the raindrops tumble all around Heaven opens a magic lane When all the clouds darken up the skyway There's a rainbow highway to be found Leading from your window pane To a place behind the sun just a step beyond the rain Somewhere over the rainbow Way up high There's a land that I heard of once In a lullaby Somewhere over the rainbow Skies are blue And the dreams that you care to dream Really do come true Someday I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far behind me Where troubles melt like lemon drops way above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly Birds fly over the rainbow Why then oh why can't I? If happy little bluebirds fly over the rainbow Why oh why can't I?

Doris Day is an ultimate under rated star and singer, also the simple The Girl Next Door. Her voice has the certain texture, that sounded plain but addictive after awhile. This is from her first movie, Romance on the High Seas (1948)
