THE ULTIMATE FASHION HISTORY: Dark Age Europe

21:46
Fashion is Dark Age Europe was not perhaps at its height, but what The Anglo-Saxons may have lacked in their simple tunics, they more than made up for with their gorgeous gold and bronze cloisonne. Yet it was Charlemagne and The Carolingian Renaissance that put Western Europe of the fashion map in The Dark Ages, and costume of the Carolingians remains amongst fashion's most sumptuous! Enjoy.

THE ULTIMATE FASHION HISTORY: The 1950s

01:16:48
In this episode of The Ultimate Fashion History, we're heading into the stylish 1950s where Mid-Century optimism clashed with Cold War paranoia, and where the return to femininity seen in Dior's 'New Look' and the chic sophistication of the Chanel Cardigan Suit lay in stark contract to both the leather-clad rockers and/or the finger-clicking Beatniks of the burgeoning teenage subculture. An era of contrasts and dichotomies, it's no wonder that the '50s was the golden age of cocktails!

Pointy Shoes Were All The Rage Today, if you decided to wear long, pointed shoes, you might look a little eccentric to say the least, but in medieval times – pointy shoes were all the rage! Forget Adidas, if you wanted to look cool in the 14th and 15th century, you would wear crakows, named after the former Polish capital of Krakow. These shoes might have been fashionable, but they were NOT practical. 9. Urine as an Antiseptic This medical practice- if you could call it that- wasn’t used all the time, but there is a lot of evidence that using urine as a form of antiseptic was common in medieval times. And it wasn’t done only among the commoners or simple folk – it was actually a part of royal medical practice. Doctors could tell what was wrong with people just by looking at their urine, and during the Middle Ages it became a solid tool for doctors, providing them with all kinds of information! 8. Football Was Banned in England Who would have thought that the country which popularized this sport was the one that banned it in the first place? But, it’s true – at one point, playing football wasn’t allowed in England. Women's fashions year by year: 1795 to 1948

08:21
153 yrs of women's fashion in 8 mins . Up to 1893 it's sound stuff (the original source for pre-1893 seems to have shown the spring fashion followed by the autumn one but I'm afraid I haven't reflected this in the order they appear in the frame for each year, not having noticed until it was too late, while pics chosen to fill gaps in the original for 1801, 1878, 1879 and 1886 were picked for that year from the web, at random) - after 1893 seasons are ignored and it's the work of someone who's quite fussy about dating but couldn't tell a twill from a taffeta. Acknowledgement of all image sources given in the end credits (except for half a dozen or so mislaid ones) - both thanks and apologies to all website owners concerned.

Medieval Bras and Lingerie Found

01:55
It was a leap into the modern age for women when the bra went into mass production exactly 100 years ago. But now it's emerged that even the maidens and maidservants of the middle ages already appreciated the brassiere. Austrian archaeologists have found undergarments in a castle in Austria, supporting the claim that the modern-day bra may actually have its roots in the Middle Ages. This would mean that bras were used much earlier than previously thought; until now historians believed that bras originated as late as the 1800's. The world's oldest brassieres resemble the modern ones in an astounding manner. Of the four bras found, two of them have the same structure as modern lingerie. This is considered something of a sensation, since it was previously believed that bras with cups and strings over the shoulders were a product of our modern times. [Beatrix Nutz, Archaeologist]: (female, German) "If you take the cups as a guideline - and this is what I must take into consideration - it is like a modern bra. It needs cups." The archaeologists came across the find rather by accident. The dilapidated medieval castle of Lengberg in Eastern Tyrol had to be renovated, and when floor boards were removed the stunning find was discovered. More than 2,700 textile pieces, tools, musical instruments and even a deck of cards were found. Using radiocarbon dating it was discovered that the lingerie dated back to between 1440 and 1485. Beatrix Nutz explains why such examples of undergarments have not been discovered before: [Beatrix Nutz, Archaeologist]: (female, German) "There are old textiles from the 15th century. But these are mostly things that were considered worth keeping even then, like robes of the clergy which were kept in churches, or elaborate things belonging to the high nobility. Everyday clothes were mostly thrown away. You hardly find anything complete, only at excavations. And this is a great view into the life in the middle ages." Parisian Street Style for Women over 40, Middle Aged Glamour. Winter Edition. Parisian Street Style for Women over 40, Middle Aged Glamour. What are the mysterious qualities that make French women so stylish? Words like “effortless” and “undone” come to mind. French women especially those over 40 don't follow trends. It is all about the timeless and classic look. A natural color form fitting coat, a puffer jacket, a cashmere or wool hat, mitten and scarf, a pair of stylish all weather boots are the winter wardrobe staples. How do we know which clothes the Vikings wore and from where do we have this knowledge from? That is the question that I intend to answer today. THE ULTIMATE FASHION HISTORY: The 18th Century

01:08:44
The 18th Century saw the height of The Age of Enlightenment, with Man's triumph over nature giving forth a love of artifice that extended to the human form. Rococo prettiness meshed with this obsession with artifice, giving rise to the panniers, powder and periwigs of this most decadent of fashion centuries. Yet behind the pretty powder the sartorial truth was somewhat grotesque! Enjoy.
