“The original firehouse was built in 1836,” says Julian LaVerdiere, production designer and artist. “We wanted something that would have felt like it worked its way into the original architectural history.” LaVerdiere and his wife, Erica Hohf, who also works in set design but primarily in feature films, have transformed the space, renting out the first floor (now a Stumphouse Coffee), while turning the second story into their all-black home, sanctuary and workspace, with an archery range, Japanese soaking tub, and terrace. In this episode of Interior Lives, our design editor Wendy Goodman takes us inside the couple’s beautiful, set-like home, where we met their pet snake and learned the importance of getting materials from the source, and why black plays such an important role in their approach to design.

Van Gogh's "Starry Night," Explained to Passersby in a NYC Subway | The Big Picture with Jerry Saltz
Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night is one of the most recognizable paintings in all of art history, and has become a textbook example of “post-impressionist” painting. Our art critic, Jerry Saltz, took a replica of Starry Night underground, in the hopes of learning what New Yorkers make of it and helping them understand the work — and the man behind it.

High School Student Fools New York Magazine With Bullsh*t Story
"The New York Magazine feature on a high school kid who made $72 million trading stocks turned out to be complete bullshit. Now, in an interview withThe New York Observer, the featured kid is pointing fingers at the author, who's defending the piece, arguing people should have realized it was a hoax all along. The fantastical story revolved around a Stuyvesant High School student named Mohammed Islam, who claimed he had earned around $72 million trading oil and gold after school. The reporter, Jessica Pressler, noted that although "Mo" was "shy" about exactly how much he'd made, he had a lot of money. And, according to a later editor's note to the article, "Mohammed provided bank statements that showed he is worth eight figures, and he confirmed on the record that he's worth eight figures.” * Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) and Ana Kasparian (http://www.twitter.com/AnaKasparian) discuss. *Read more here from http://gawker.com/new-york-magazines-confirmed-teen-millionare-says-he-1671553790

The Last Chess Shop in New York City
“I came here to get a PhD in American literature, and here I am, with pictures of American writers on the wall—a chess vendor.” That’s Imad Khachan, owner of Chess Forum, the only remaining chess shop in New York City. A Palestinian refugee with no family of his own, Khachan has become “the father of everybody” to a community of chess enthusiasts, those curious to learn more about the game, and those whom Khachan describes as the city’s “invisible people.” “When no other place will welcome you, you have a seat [here],” Khachan says in Lonelyleap's short documentary, King of the Night. The film depicts the chess shop as more than a home for chess players; Khachan’s open-door policy has provided refuge for many patrons with difficult lives at home. According to Molly Brass, one of the film’s directors, some Chess Forum regulars have no home at all. “There are very few places in New York that accept and welcome anyone—really anyone—to sit and spend as many hours as they want to, at negligible or no cost,” Brass told The Atlantic. “It's almost a revolutionary idea at this point.” "King of the Night" was produced by Lonelyleap. It is part of The Atlantic Selects, an online showcase of short documentaries from independent creators, curated by The Atlantic.
