One of the 500 episodes of the "Industry on Parade" show, a short television program that aired in the United States from 1950–1960. It was produced by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). The show depicts complicated industrial processes that transform raw materials into finished products available for consumption by Americans. Its episodes generally contain several sections, each of which looks at a different aspect of some larger topic within industry. The companies featured in this episode include: The C&H Sugar Company and its plantations on Hawaii are shown at 1:00, with a focus on the shipment of unrefined sugar to the mainland, and competition against foreign sugar. The Hilo Sugar Plantation is also shown. At 4:40, a segment looks at the L.G. Balfour Co. in Massachusetts which makes trophies. Founded as the L.G. Balfour Company, Balfour today is an operating unit of Commemorative Brands, Inc. Lead is used to make castings of trophy statues. At 7:30 the Vandenburg Trophy is shown, awarded to top military pilots every year. At 7:50 the show looks at a maker of office cubicles or partitions, which are made by the Arnot-Jamestown Division of Aetna Steel Products in Jamestown, New York. Compared to modern partitions these are very solid and heavy -- made of steel! At 10:30, "A Message from Industry to You" presents a lesson about the importance of public opinion and faith in self government, with images of citizens voting. At 11:00 the film shows a land yacht or recreational vehicle. These mobile homes, known as the Safari, are built by Saginaw Manufacturing which used to built pulleys. At 12:30, a home that is being moved is shown as the Safari drives past. Both are "mobile homes" but only the Safari provides a truly alternative lifestyle. The show was nationally syndicated, and local stations could show it free of charge—which they did, in a wide range of different time slots. Footage was also distributed widely among American schools and community organizations. Ratings information is scarce but existing local reports suggest that the show was quite popular. The show was reportedly conceived by Johnny Johnstone, the director of television and radio at NAM. NAM collaborated with NBC in producing the show from 1950–1953. (NBC producer Arthur Lodge continued to work with the show until it ended in 1960.) In 1958, the show changed formats, recycling and rearranging old footage to provide broader overviews of different industries. In total, Industry on Parade aired more than 500 episodes during its 10 years in existence. Each Industry on Parade episode was 13.5 minutes long and, for most of the series, contained three to four stories examining some aspect of American manufacturing and business. Towards the end of the 1950s, episodes were arranged thematically, featuring a single type of product, industry, or American consumer. Most episodes also included "public service announcements" placed between story segments or at the end of the episodes to promote capitalism, the American way, and the rewards of a free economy and society. NAM provided the weekly episodes to one television station in each market throughout the country, at no charge, for broadcast, usually in non-prime time slots. Samsung has opened its new mobile factory in India. This factory is said to be the world's largest mobile factory. The factory plot which is of 35-acre, is situated at Sector 81 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae will be officially inaugurating the Samsung Electronics factory on Monday. By opening the new factory, Samsung India aims to increase its overall production to 50 per cent in the next three years, which is currently at 10 per cent. 1. Samsung is currently making 67 million smartphones in India and with the new plant, the company is aiming to manufacture nearly 120 million mobile phones. Commenting on the new Samsung plant, Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research says that the new factory will reduce the time to market for Samsung. "This will help Samsung bring some local features to the devices powered by R&D here. Apart from this, the company can also bring in export opportunity for Samsung to SAARC and other regions," Pathak told IANS. 2. Back in June 2017, the South Korean giant had announced a Rs 4,915 crore investment to expand the new Noida plant. It just a year after a new of the announcement, Samsung's Noida plant is all-ready to double production. By setting up the new plant Samsung is not only aiming to double its mobile phone production but other consumer electronics products as well, like refrigerators and flat panel televisions. 3. According to HC Hong, President and CEO, Samsung India, a bigger manufacturing plant will help the company cater to the growing demand for Samsung products across India. 4. Established in 1995, Samsung India laid the foundation for the Noida plant next year, 1996. In 1997, the production commenced and the first Samsung TV was rolled out to the market. It is in 2003 that the Samsung initiated the refrigerator production in the country. It is in just a couple of years, that is by 2005, Samsung had become the market leader in manufacturing TV panels. In 2007, the existing Noida plat started manufacturing mobile phones. In 2012, Samsung became the leader in mobile phones in the country and the Noida facility rolled out the first-ever Galaxy S3 device. Today, Samsung is among the top mobile brands in India. With the new Noida plant Samsung is expecting to expand its mobile business in the country. To recollect, Samsung India has registered around 27 per cent growth in mobile business revenue for the financial year 2016-17. 5. Samsung currently has two manufacturing plants in the country -- one in Noida and the second one in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. There are five R&D centres, and one design centre in Noida, where somewhere over 70,000 people work. And for every pair that we sell, we distribute one to someone in need. What is the main challenge in the glasses industry that you want to overcome? 00:18 Blumenthal: When we were sure of exploring this opportunity, we took a look at the industry dynamics and we found that there were few very large companies controlling the market and keeping prices artificially high. One such company is Luxottica and they basically own the frame industry. So they're vertically integrated. They own manufacturing facilities in Europe and Asia. They own licenses to all the major brands like Chanel, DKNY, Ralph Lauren. So when you buy those brands, you're buying from a company that's just licensing and paying a royalty to those brands. Those brands aren't even designing those frames or manufacturing it or even selling it. So when you look at an industry and you see that there's this one company that's doing roughly $7 billion a year in revenue and we're finding that those glasses are being marked up more than 20 times what they cost to manufacture, we thought, "This is something where we can do good. We can disrupt this industry and hopefully bring down prices for everybody because it just doesn't make sense." So we thought that there had to be a better way. And low and behold, we discovered that you could provide the same quality of glasses but for much lower price about $95. And in the process we felt we could build a company that could do good in the world and could really be thoughtful in terms of all the stakeholders. So for our customers, it would be exceptional value, that $500 product at $95. For our employees, it would be a place where they could flourish and grow professionally and personally. For the one billion people on earth that don't have access to glasses, we thought that we could provide a pair to them for every pair that we sell. How do you push for change in the industry? 02:02 David Gilboa: What we need to do is really educate consumers so that they understand that there's really no fundamental reason why glasses need to be so expensive. At the end of the day, it's a couple pieces of plastic and metal. It's technology that was invented several hundred years ago and there's really been little innovation on the product side or the distribution side. And the reason why there has been such little innovation is because essentially there's oligopoly that controls the industry. Part of our thesis is that under $100, people start to think of glasses as fashion accessories as opposed to something that they buy every time their prescription expires. And so in the US today, the average eyewear consumer buys a new pair every 2.1 years. We want to drive that down dramatically and make people think of eyeglasses the same way that women think of purses or shoes where you can own multiples pairs. You match them with different outfits or you wear them for different occasions. You can have one pair that's a little more conservative, you wear it to the office. You have a couple pairs that you'd wear out socially. And we're already starting to see that among our consumer base where a lot of customers are buying six, seven, eight pairs at a time, which is really exciting.
