If yes, then you would know that it would raise an error, as DDL statements are not allowed inside a PL/SQL Block. So the solution to such a case, where you want to generate tables, or sequences or want to execute any DDL statement on the fly, then use synamic sql. Dynamic SQL statment will allow you to create state statements on the fly and then you can execute them using the execute immediate statement. This video tutorial demonstrates on this topic of using synamic sql with execute immediate in a PL/SQL block.

Instead you should be using parameters. Notice in the following example, we are creating dynamic sql queries by concatenating parameter values, instead of using parameterized queries. This stored procedure is prone to SQL injection. Let's prove this by creating a "Search Page" that calls this procedure. Name it "DynamicSQLInStoredProcedure.aspx". We do not have to change any other code. At this point run the application one more time and type the following text in the "Firstname" textbox and click the "Search" button. ' Drop database SalesDB -- Notice "SalesDB" database is not dropped, So in this case our application is not succeptible to SQL injection attack. Summary : Whether you are creating dynamic sql in a client application (like a web application) or in a stored procedure always use parameters instead of concatnating strings. Using parameters to create dynamic sql statements prevents sql injection.

We are discussing database relationships which are a key feature of relational database management systems. We first discussed entities and attributes. I talked about how each entity is assigned a table and each attribute is a column within a table. We moved on to the three kinds of relationships. The first was one-to-one. This describes an entity and an attribute. A piece of data that is exclusive to an entity is, by definition, an attribute of that entity. This is stored in one table with the attribute being a column within this table. The second relationship is one-to-many. This relationship is between two entities. The way we properly store this in a database is using a foreign key in the child table. Remember, the child table is the entity on the many side of the one-to-many relationship. Every row within the child table will have a value for the foreign key that references a primary key in the parent table. This assumes that the foreign key field is not optional (NOT NULL). If the foreign key is optional, than a reference is not required but any reference must be valid. The third kind of relationship is a many-to-many relationship. In this situation, we need 3 tables. The many-to-many relationship is broken up into two one-to-many relationships. The intermediary table will associate each entity from one table with the appropriate entities in the other table. There is debate as to whether this table needs a primary key. This is because you can intact use the combination of two foreign keys as a primary key. This works because we will never have two duplicate rows within the intermediary table and the two foreign keys work as a compound key because of this. We finally discussed primary keys and foreign keys. Primary keys are used to keep each row inside of a table unique. If this key is a computer generated number it is known as a surrogate key, otherwise it is known as a natural key. Natural keys have real world meaning. For example, a social security number may work, or an email address (in some situations), etc. Whichever type of key you choose is solely up to you and/or the company you may be working for. This function can be used as either an analytic or an aggregate function, and the syntax depends on how you use it. As an aggregate function it looks like this: DENSE_RANK ( expr, [expr(n)] ) WITHIN GROUP ( ORDER BY (order_expr [ASC|DESC] [NULLS FIRST|LAST] ) These parameters are: - expr: this is the value to search for in a particular table. You can specify multiple search values, and just separate them by a comma. - order_expr: this is used to order the expr values by, because you get a different results depending on what order you rank the values in. - NULLS FIRST or LAST: this is where you can specify if you want to have NULL values appear at the top of your ranking order or at the bottom. As an analytic function, it looks like this: DENSE_RANK() OVER ( [query_partition_clause] order_by_clause) The parameters are: - query_partition_clause: this is the expression that the ranking is “grouped” by, as analytic functions allow you to group data within rows. - order_by_clause: this is the expression to order your results by to determine a rank. For this function, if two records have the same sort or rank position, they will have the same RANK value. It won’t cause a gap in the rankings, unlike the RANK function which does cause a gap. The goal of this video is to take the CREATE TABLE statement we have and walk through the different ways to create primary keys. This and foreign keys are the most common constraints, so we need to make sure that you have this one down. Once we have a more complex database design with multiple tables, we will learn the proper way to create foreign keys. For now, I am going to keep all of our constraints at the column level, unnamed. The only exception is the primary key, because that is what we are focusing on in this video. The first way to create the primary key is at the column level, unnamed. The primary key is very important because it what we use to distinguish rows from one another. Every table you create is going to need a primary key, and I suggest putting a lot of effort into making sure your keys are set up correctly and organized. --Delete the table if needed: DROP TABLE users; CREATE TABLE users( user_id NUMBER PRIMARY KEY, username VARCHAR2(50 CHAR) NOT NULL UNIQUE ) The next way is at the column level, but named: --Delete the table: DROP TABLE users; CREATE TABLE users( user_id NUMBER CONSTRAINT users_pk PRIMARY KEY, username VARCHAR2(50 CHAR)NOT NULL UNIQUE ) The general naming convention here is the table name followed by an underscore, followed by pk for primary key. Finally, the third way, which is at the table level, is the way we are going to create our primary key: --Delete the table: DROP TABLE users; CREATE TABLE users( user_id NUMBER, username VARCHAR2(50 CHAR) NOT NULL UNIQUE, CONSTRAINT users_pk PRIMARY KEY (user_id) ) Now, once you've created these constraints, you can use Oracle SQL Developer to find these constraints. Open your databases in the connections tab and find the table in the Tables folder. Double click your table and travel to the Constraints tab. You can tell here that the UNIQUE constraint still exists in this table, but it has a pretty disgusting name. It kind of wants to make me puke. Referencing that constraint in the future with that wacky name would be a burden. Engrave these three options in your head so that you can use any of them whenever you need and can read other peoples' code. Thank you for sticking with the series thus far. CREATE TABLE users( user_id NUMBER, username VARCHAR2(50 CHAR) UNIQUE, first_name VARCHAR2(50 CHAR), last_name VARCHAR2 (50 CHAR), CONSTRAINT users_pk PRIMARY KEY (user_id) ); But before we finish this design, we should consider indexing certain columns. What columns should we index? Well, as a reminder, the columns that are indexed by default are columns with the UNIQUE constraint, and those that are labeled as primary keys. Columns that are not indexed but often should be are those labeled as a foreign key. The column that jumps out the most to me is the creator column of the project table. It's the only foreign key that is not part of some index. Let's fix this by creating our first index. The way we do that is with the CREATE INDEX command. CREATE INDEX projects_creator_ix ON projects (creator) What naming convention are we following for the index? We are naming it by the table name, followed by an underscore, followed by the column, followed by an underscore, followed by an ix (for index). In this situation it does not apply, but if our foreign key column is labeled as UNIQUE, we can add the UNIQUE keyword like this: CREATE UNIQUE INDEX projects_creator_ix ON projects (creator) Now if you want to get rid of an INDEX, you can use this command: DROP INDEX projects_creator_ix Now, if we want to select data from the user table and the project table we can do that much faster. That's because the foreign key and column it references are both indexed and those are the columns we would do the join on. We will discuss how to do joins in a future video. So what are some potential problems with this database design? Overall, it is pretty good. With this design though we need to make sure there is no way for someone to update a user's username. Lead and Lag functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012 Lead function is used to access subsequent row data along with current row data Lag function is used to access previous row data along with current row data ORDER BY clause is required PARTITION BY clause is optional Syntax LEAD(Column_Name, Offset, Default_Value) OVER (ORDER BY Col1, Col2, ...) LAG(Column_Name, Offset, Default_Value) OVER (ORDER BY Col1, Col2, ...) Offset - Number of rows to lead or lag. Default_Value - The default value to return if the number of rows to lead or lag goes beyond first row or last row in a table or partition. If default value is not specified NULL is returned. When you are on the last row, LEAD(Salary, 2, -1) allows you to move forward 2 rows. Since there no rows beyond the last row 1, Lead function in this case returns the default value -1. When you are on the last row, LAG(Salary, 1, -1) allows us to move backward 1 row and retrieve the salary from the previous row. SQL Concat () function concatenates two separate character string into one character string. Let's see the syntax Concat (string_1 , String_2) Note here that SQL Concat function takes only two arguments at a time. This SQL Concat function will return string_1 concatenated with string_2. This also means that it will return a single string which is a combined string of parameter String_1 and String_2. Both the parameters of SQL Concat function String_1 and string_2 can be of any data-type. You can even specify the columns of the table here. SQL Concat function is equivalent to the concatenation operator (||). SQL concatenation operator is represented by double solid vertical bars or we can say double pipe signs. Question: How to concatenate more than two strings as SQL Concat that can have only 2 parameters and what is the difference between SQL Concat Function and SQL concatenation operator? The one answer for the second Question What is the Difference between SQL Concat Function and SQL concatenation operator? Is While SQL Concat function takes only two parameters, The Concat operator can be repeated as often as is necessary. Meaning, by the help of SQL Concat operator you can combine as many strings as you want. And Concatenation operator is also not supported by several databases such as SQL server so this might cause problem. To answer the first question How to concatenate more than two strings as SQL Concat that can have only 2 parameters? We will have to jump over SQL developer. Let's see some examples. Say we want to retrieve the full name of an employee from Employees table. Let's try it using SQL Concat function. SELECT Concat (first_name, last_name) AS "Full Name" FROM employees; Here in this query we use two column names - first_name and last_name as arguments of our Concat function Execute. As you can see here, we get full name of our employee but there is no space in between first name and last name. We will see how to format this string using SQL Concat function in a few seconds But before that, let's see how to do the same task using SQL concatenation operator. SELECT first_name ||last_name AS "Full name" FROM employees; As you can see this query also produces the same result. Now we will see how to format full name of employees First we will do this using SQL concatenation Operator. SELECT first_name||' '||last_name AS "Full name" FROM employees; Now you can see we get space between first name and last name of the employee. Again, let's do it using SQL Concat function. Here we will see the nested function concept where we will be using nested Concat function to achieve this formatted string. SELECT Concat (Concat (first_name, ' '), last_name) FROM employees; Inner Concat function has two parameters. These are our first column name first_name and an empty string which will be a space between first name and second name. This Concat will now return a string which is the first name with space. This returning string will be the first input of our Outer Concat and column last_name will be the second input. All together this will give us the desired output. As you can see this method is complex than the first one where we use SQL concatenation operator.

So far in this series we have discussed database design, creating tables, and constraints. We've brought up the concept of foreign keys, but we have not explained how to create them. That is the goal of this video and the upcoming videos. We want to study those foreign keys! Let's make them not so foreign. Let's learn the proper way to define a foreign key. As a reminder, a foreign key is a column that references a column of another table. The column it references must either be a primary key, or have the UNIQUE constraint. This means that every value inside of the column that is labeled as a foreign key, there must be that value in some row of the referenced column. As an example, imagine that we have the users table, and we have a table service_requests. We could have a column in the service_request that references a column in the users table. Usually this would be the primary key that is referenced, but there is nothing stopping you from referencing a unique column. Just for fun, let's go through an example using the username column. If we have a service_requests table, every single row within the table is going to be what some would consider an instance of a service_request. This means that the table columns are like the blueprint for what a service request looks like and then each row is an individual service request. If we have one of the columns labeled as a foreign key to the username of the users table, what does that mean practically? It means that for a single row, the value for that column must be a value that exists in the users table. We could have a service_request submitted by a user with the username of Yoloswagman. This means that there must be a row inside of the users table that has the value Yoloswagman for the username column. This brings up the concept of parent and child relationships. Yoloswagman in this situation is the parent, and his service request is the child. When we draw it out, it makes sense why a primary key must be UNIQUE. If we had two Yoloswagmans, the child would not know which column is the parent. The same applies if we were using IDs and we had So remember, always reference a primary key or a column with the UNIQUE constraint. Now, I have a question for you. Do foreign keys automatically have the UNIQUE constraint, just like primary keys? The answer is no. A parent row can have many child rows. It makes sense because the user could submit multiple service requests. Can we force the column to be unique? Absolutely. If that was the case, the user could only make one service request. Another question. Do foreign keys automatically have the NOT NULL constraint, just like primary keys? The answer is no. Essentially what this means is that a child could be created with no parent. Can we force the column to be NOT NULL? Absolutely. It is ok in some situations to allow the row to be null, but in this situation it makes no sense. It would be wise for us to add that constraint ourselves. So now that you understand some more differences between primary and foreign keys and parent child relationships, take all of these questions into consideration when you are creating foreign keys. In the next video, we are going to start a small project that is going to require multiple tables. We'll take a video to design our structure and then we'll get to creating those foreign keys in Oracle SQL Developer. Ok let's do some practical For this practical we will be using 2 tables First is dual table Which is a dummy table provided by oracle? And I have created another table again by the name of example. This will be our second table. Let's start with SQL function upper ( ); SELECT upper('hello world') FROM dual; As you can see I have used "hello world" completely in lowercase as parameter to SQL upper function. Execute it. Here, our result has given us a completely new hello world string which is in uppercase. Similarly you can also use SQL upper function to perform other DML Let's try This time we will work on our second table EXAMPLE; insert into example values (upper('manish')); first parentheses for values and second for SQL function upper. Let's check the result. As you can see here inserted value is in upper case. Lets compare it with simple insert query Insert into example values ('manish'); Execute it, i think now it's clear that when we perform simple insert DML the inserted value will be the same you provide. Similarly let's try SQL function initcap(); SELECT initcap('hello world') FROM dual; As you see here in result the initial letters of string hello world are in uppercase. Let's do the insert query insert into example values (initcap('hello world')); initial letters of string also are in uppercase. Let's try SQL function lower(); This time we have to write our hello world in all caps. SELECT lower('HELLO WORLD') FROM dual; Execute String totally in lower case. Similarly you can user SQL function lower in other DML like insert and all.
