Choosing a tyre can be difficult. They look similar and until you get them on the car, you don't know how they are going to perform out on the road. Watch this wet braking test to see the difference between a set of premium tyres and a set of cheaper budget tyres that look similar but perform very differently on the road. The budget tyre took an average of 14 metres or 3 and 1/2 car lengths extra to stop. When the premium tyre had come to a stop, the car on budget tyres was still travelling at 31mph.

Don't let a small puncture stop a great journey. ContiSeal is a technology designed to seal damaged tyre tread. View the video to see how the tyre helps you to stay on the road. It is important to note that if your car is factory fitted with ContiSeal tyres, removing them will not give you any protection against punctures and therefore an alternative extended mobility system is advisable such as a spare tyre or sealant kit. Before we kick off on this: I’m in ‘Straya. We spell it with a ‘Y’, like, I dunno, everywhere on earth except Retardistan, which is also called ‘Merica. Knock yourself out in the comments feed, on this, Jethro. Say hi to Jim-Bob and Ellie-Mae. Enjoy the spit roast. And all the other hillbilly fun. There’s a whole world outside the USA. How long has that been the case. I’m John Cadogan, from AutoExpert.com.au - the place where Aussie new car buyers save thousands off their next new cars. Hit me up on the website for that. Welcome to another ‘What the FAQ’ - which oxygenates your more common questions and (I hope) equips you with the facts you need to jump these vexatious hurdles. There are about 12 million cars on Australian roads, which means - ballpark - 50 million tyres. And that means replacement tyres, even in a global backwater such as this, are big business. I get several recurring questions on this, which all boil down to: Which tyres should I buy? The basics are: They have to be the right size - and the right load rating. You can choose a tyre with a load rating greater than the minimum, but not less than that. That’s a detail the tyre retailer usually looks after. I’m kinda passionate about tyres because for five or six years I ran all the Wheels Magazine annual tyre tests. We conscripted the assistance of a lot of local tyre engineers to get the testing protocols right for those tests, and as a result, I learned a lot more than I ever thought I would about tyres. So the first thing you need to know is that the manufacturers of quality tyres all have a real problem: Tyres are all black and round, so the really good ones look exactly the same as the really shit ones. It’s a marketing challenge par excellence. If you’re a non-technical person, it can be quite hard to believe a good tyre that looks exactly the same as a shit tyre, but costs maybe $100 bucks more is actually that much better. But - trust me on this - it is. There are a great many urban myths on various tyre brands - like some are allegedly quieter. Some are allegedly better at grip in the wet - whatever. Having stood on the side of the track, set up the timing beams, briefed the race driver, consulted with the expert engineers, I can tell you those brand-based myths are bullshit. The number one thing to remember when you’re buying replacement tyres is that all the known, quality brands: Pirelli, Dunlop, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Continental, Toyo, Michelin, Yokohama - et cetera - you know the ones I mean - all those quality brands perform about the same as each other, for a particular size and category of tyre. Obviously a Pirelli on a Porsche is very likely to out-perform a Yokohama on a Yaris. We’re talking apples-for-apples here. I’d include Hankook and Kumho on that ‘quality brands’ list, too - they are definitely up there, at least they are today. And I say this on the basis of trackside measurements - testing - that I actually conducted. There’s no doubt. And FYI - I have no commercial affiliation with any tyre manufacturer. The number two thing is: Don’t ask for brand-type advice at the retail coal face. Retailers are incentivised by different manufacturers - so there are different agendas at play. The retailer invariable recommends the tyre that’s right for him, commercially, not necessarily you. I’d get three different quotes on three different quality brands, over the phone, and go with the cheapest one. It really is that simple. But asking brand advice from a tyre retailer is like walking into a Mazda dealer and asking him if Toyota is any good. It’s not a place where unbiased advice is forthcoming.

It is almost universally accepted that tires are the best performance upgrade for a car aside from driver experience. However, as top tier performance tires get more extreme many of the issues outweigh some of the benefits for typical street cars and drivers. I waited for some time to make the video "Is It Better To Put New Tires on the Front or Back?". It all started with a social media post I did in 2015 about the subject. There was a video in that post that showed putting new tires in the back was the best option. Here's a link to that video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=endLPwy3cQc Social media post https://www.facebook.com/EricTheCarGuy/posts/10153218614317843 I didn't agree with that and wanted to do some testing of my own. This video shows my results. Some facts about the test vehicle. It's a FWD Acura Vigor with a 60/40 weight distribution. It's been aligned and has a good working suspension. 4 new tires are always the best option, but if you can only afford 2, I say put them on the front. What are your thoughts? Swapping Tires On My Honda S2000 Yields Incredible Results RaceLogic VBox Sport - http://amzn.to/2nPBBwX Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 Product Links: Bridgestone RE-71R - http://amzn.to/2odGdRf Vbox Sport - http://amzn.to/2nPBBwX Garmin 4K Camera Used - http://amzn.to/2fZSSQ0 Data Overlay OBD2 Link - http://amzn.to/2fZMYi3 I swap the undersized, out of alignment, mismatched, cheap Fuzion VRI and HRI tires on my S2000 for all new Bridgestone RE-71R tires. To prove whether or not changing the tires makes a significant difference for my vehicle's handling, I analyze braking behavior (stopping time, distance, and peak g-forces), using the RaceLogic Vbox Sport (link above). The results are extremely impressive. While the Fuzion tires get worse with ever brake test, as they begin to heat up. The RE-71R tires, however, get better with every test. The difference in braking distance before and after the tire swap literally takes my car from behaving like a Cadillac Escalade, to an Alfa Romeo 4C. Quite the jump! New study shows expensive tires aren't always worth it. Should you buy expensive tires? What all-season tires are the best? Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 EE Shirts! - http://bit.ly/2BHsiuo Recommended Books & Car Products - http://amzn.to/2BrekJm Do expensive tires perform better? Are expensive tires worth the additional cost? AAA recently performed a study with 12 different all-season tires, in two different price categories, for two different vehicles. A 2017 Ford F-150 and a 2017 Toyota Camry were selected for the test since they are the most popular passenger cars and light trucks, representative of what many people are driving. Each car had six different tires were tested, and each tires had two sets: one brand new, and one set worn down to 4/32nds. The results they found are fascinating, as price is not the leading factor in which determines whether or not a tire will perform well in the wet (new or worn), even among competing tires within the same category. There were large variations among the individual tires, and to make the best decision when purchasing tires, it's ideal to look up information on the individual tires you are considering. Some higher cost tires proved to be worth it, while others didn't perform as well as lower cost tires. Check out the video for full details! It should be noted that the tests in this video focus on wet performance: braking from 60 mph to 0 mph in 1mm of water, and skid past testing for lateral acceleration on 0.8mm of water. Both of these tests are performed with both new and worn tires. There is also NVH testing performed on new tires. The results do not show the differences in dry performance, or show how long a tire will last, or discuss warranty. There may be reasons to spend more on a tire that do not necessarily correlate with wet performance. I was recently invited to Valencia to try out Michelin's new tyre The Michelin Primacy 3, and from my experiences during the testing I was amazed at how different top branded tyres can be ! Before I went I was wondering... would they set the test against the other top tyre manufacturers such as Continental, Goodyear and Bridgestone, as after, all comparing a budget tyre against a premium brand it would be easy to spot the differences, no cheap budget brands here.
