ContractsX: From Trust to Promise to Contract | HarvardX on edX | Course About Video

02:39
Contracts are a part of our everyday life, arising in collaboration, trust, promise and credit. How are contracts formed? What makes a contract enforceable? What happens when one party breaks a promise? Take this course free on edX: https://www.edx.org/course/contract-law-trust-promise-contract-harvardx-hls2x-0 ABOUT THIS COURSE Learn about contracts from Harvard Law Professor Charles Fried, one of the world’s leading authorities on contract law. Contracts are promises that the law will enforce. But when will the law refuse to honor a promise? What happens when one party does not hold to their part of the deal? We are exposed to contracts in all areas of our life — agreeing to terms when downloading a new computer program, hiring a contractor to repair a leaking roof, and even ordering a meal at a restaurant. Knowing the principles of contracts is not just a skill needed by lawyers, it illuminates for everyone a crucial institution that we use all the time and generally take for granted. This contract law course, with new materials and updated case examples, is designed to introduce the range of issues that arise when entering and enforcing contracts. It will provide an introduction to what a contract is and also analyze the purpose and significance of contracts. Then, it will discuss the intent to create legal relations, legality and morality, and the distinction between gifts and bargains. The course also investigates common pitfalls: one-sided promises, mistake, fraud, and frustration. With the knowledge of what makes contracts and how they can go wrong, Professor Fried will discuss remedies and specific performance. Finally, Professor Fried will introduce how contracts can create rights for third parties. The course’s instructor, Charles Fried, has been teaching at Harvard Law School for more than 50 years and has written extensively on contracts. Not only is Professor Fried a leading authority on contract law, but he also utilizes a story-telling approach to explaining the topic, which creates a unique and interesting class experience. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN - A theoretical background of contracts, trust, and promise - Contracts the government will stand behind and those it won’t - Illusory promises, offer and acceptance - The limitations of contract law - Writing and Interpretation of contracts - Key concepts including mistake, fraud, and frustration; remedies and specific performance; and third parties

Building trust | James Davis | TEDxUSU

16:39
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. I trust my boss! I trust Apple Computer! But what does that mean…why do you trust them? It has been said that trust is the glue that holds people, organizations and societies together. Without trust, relationships become rigid, less efficient and economies are slowed. Yet, despite all the studies and platitudes, trust may be one of the most misunderstood, misinterpreted and misapplied aspects of human and organizational relationships. Based upon years of his award-winning research in psychology and business, Jim Davis explains what trust is along with its associated risks. He will explain what can be done to influence how people trust you by nurturing three traits others perceive about you. Davis describes how he has worked with organizations and individuals throughout the world to improve trusting relationships. James H. Davis is a professor of strategic management and the chairman of the Management Department at Utah State University. Prior to USU, he was the John F. O’Shaughnessy Professor of Family Enterprises and professor of strategic management at the University of Notre Dame. He earned his PhD in corporate strategy from the University of Iowa. He has worked with many major national and multinational corporations on strategic planning and company positioning. His research was recognized by The Academy of Management Review as the most influential theory of the decade of the 1990s. He is the author of two books: Social Capital: Multidisciplinary Perspectives and Growth Simply: The three-circle model. He has been a secondary education teacher, a school psychologist, private therapist and a regional mental health coordinator for the Head Start Program. Jim also plays woodwinds and has performed in many of the great concert halls and cathedrals in Europe and North America. He loves hiking, fishing and running—recently completing a 200+ mile Ragnar relay— and enjoys spending time his children and the love of his life, Jennifer. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The 48 Laws of Power Audiobook (PART 1) with Alpha - Theta Binaural Beats

01:13:14
0:00 Preface 24:26 Law 1: Never Outshine The Master 40:25 Law 2: Never Put Too Much Trust In Friends. Learn How To Use Enemies The 48 Laws of Power is the definitive manual for anyone interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control. In the book that People magazine proclaimed “beguiling” and “fascinating,” Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum. Some laws teach the need for prudence (“Law 1: Never Outshine the Master”), others teach the value of confidence (“Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness”), and many recommend absolute self-preservation (“Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally”). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in total domination. In a bold and arresting two-color package, The 48 Laws of Power is ideal whether your aim is conquest, self-defense, or simply to understand the rules of the game.

Trust Management

04:55
How to enhance trust in your organization. Interview with Prof. Dr. Tom Sommerlatte from the Trust Management Institute. Trust is a key driver of performance. A robust trust base contributes to efficient interactions within the organization. Trust allows organizations to learn faster, to innovate and to adapt to changes in the market. Trust is the foundation of employees ability to operate efficiently in their work environment and of good leadership. But managers are not sufficiently aware of the components of trust. They may therefore even destroy the trust capital by inadvertence. This video outlines the trust dimensions and how leaders can manage trust in their company.

The Secret to Detachment with the Law of Attraction (3 Ways To Detach from Outcome)

10:20
"Welcome back to another video. My name is Aaron, and I help people expand their consciousness. Now on this video I will be sharing with you the secret to detachment in order to attract what you want in your life. With this process of the paradox of detaching from your desires, it's about really understanding that the power exists within you to feel the emotions of having whatever you desire to have. " "Now I recently did a video that was called "A process more powerful than the law of attraction." It still uses the principles but it redirects it into a process that can allow us to feel the emotions that we prefer right now as if we already have whatever we want to bring outside of ourselves and bring into here. That's kind of the inside out analogy of it, but really we have the ability to feel whatever emotion we want right now in this moment. When we start to train ourselves to do this, that's when we will really start to then see the reflection in our life. " "Now the reason I mention all that is because, when comes to detachment, it's important to understand why it is so important to let go of the outcome and to allow it to happen in the past of least resistance. This is about knowing this concept. " "Now first off, there are two main reasons that detachment is so powerful. Because when you detach from something having to happen or a certain way that you want it to happen, when you detach from that perspective and you let it go, what you then beginning to do is you stop limiting yourself from the different ways that it could be brought into your life. " "For example, if it comes to bringing more abundance in your life or even a certain person like a relationship, what happens is if there's a certain blueprint for the way that you want it to happen, that blueprint, if anything else comes into your experience, any other opportunity and you don't recognize it, what you will automatically do is discount it and you won't take action on that opportunity. " "The power of this is knowing that as we simply allow it to happen in the best way possible and we have no attachment to how it happens, we are then trusting the process and we are allowing those dominoes to fall into place. We're allowing the things to happen in the best way possible. " "Now the second reason detachment is so powerful is because when we detach from the outcome, we then let go of the resistance that tends to build up inside of our body. Because if we walk around attached to it and things aren't happening the exact way that we want, we then start to feel the resistance of it. That resistance will literally block the opportunities from coming into our life. Because, as I always say, we don't necessarily attract that which we want but we always get a reflection of who we are being. " "If we are being somebody and feeling the emotions of that lack of not having what we want, we will continue to see a reflection in our life of that not coming to us or the opposite of it. Those are the main two reasons that it's so powerful to detach from the outcome. " "Now I want to give you three ways that we can apply in our life to allow us to take this into a much more powerful way. The first one has to do with the very beginning of your day. This is something that I do. I do a meditation for 20 minutes right when I wake up. " "The first, I'd say, about 10 minutes of that meditation is me just breathing and observing my breath, allowing myself to become very present. I like to bring the awareness out of thinking and into my body. That allows me not to think so much. " "Then what I do is after about 10 minutes of it, what I do is I shift my focus over to what I want to experience. You could call this segment intending, but what I do is I focus on the intentions of what I want to do that day or what I want to experience. As I focus on that, I'll focus on the emotions that I would feel. I focus on what are called submodalities. " "A submodality is the different sensory input that we would use for it. Some people are very visual. Some people hear; they're very auditory. Some people feel very visceral. Pick a combination of those or just a couple of those and allow yourself to really embody the emotions of it. Do that for 10 or 15 minutes. " "Now, at the end of those 10 or 15 minutes of doing it, simply decide you are going to let it go, you have done what you need to do for the day, and then simply trust that things will begin to ... Principles for Enhancing Legal Education

29:24
Visit the Institute for Law Teaching and Learning website at http://lawteaching.org for more resources that will help improve the quality of teaching and learning in legal education. Click SHOW MORE to learn about this video. What can faculty and students do to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in law school? What principles define good pedagogical practice in legal education? How can principles of good practice be implemented in the law classroom? These critical questions are the subject of this 29 minute, 23 second video and written materials. This resource was created for the Institute for Law School Teaching in 2001 by Gerry Hess (Gonzaga), Paula Lustbader (Seattle University), and Laurie Zimet (Hastings). Interest in and literature about how to improve law school pedagogy have been increasing, especially given the changing demographics of law students. These written materials and the video were created to provoke reflection and generate discussion about how faculty and teaching methods affect today's students and their learning. The accompanying written materials can be downloaded at: http://lawteaching.org/publications/videos/principlesforenhancing.php The video features comments from students at seven law schools (Brooklyn, Gonzaga, Hastings, Iowa, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Seattle University). These schools were selected to provide a cross-section (geographic, public/private, demographic, size) of experiences in legal education. A coordinator from each institution selected students who varied in age, ethnicity, gender, learning styles, physical and learning disabilities, race, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, year in school, and class rank. All of the students were asked to respond to the following questions: - What occurred in the classroom that interfered with your ability to learn? - What occurred in the classroom that enhanced your learning? The students' comments reflect a set of principles of good practice for contemporary higher education. The video and written materials apply the principles to legal education, explore their implications, and describe practical methods to implement them in the law school classroom. The principles, which are not ranked in order of importance, establish that effective learning environments: - Promote student-faculty contact; - Articulate clear, high expectations; - Use time effectively; - Respect differences among students; - Foster cooperation; - Provide prompt feedback; and - Encourage active learning. Principles for Enhancing Legal Education and the accompanying materials were produced in 2001 and copyright by Gerald Hess, Paula Lustbader, and Laurie Zimet. This program was made possible under a grant from the Institute for Law School Teaching at Gonzaga University School of Law and is uploaded with permission. 19:33
In his talk, Mike explores the two dominant mindsets of the police forces across the country - warrior versus guardian. He explains how the guardian mindset can lead to a much safer and connected community than the other. Captain Mike D’Antonio started his career with the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department in 2000. Mike later became a Field Training Officer responsible for training and evaluating new officers. In 2004, Mike was promoted to Detective and assigned to the Santa Clara County Specialized Enforcement Team, where he investigated high level drug traffickers, violent crimes and gang activity throughout the County. In 2008, Mike was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and returned to the Detective Bureau where he most notably investigated a high profile murder case. Next, Mike was promoted to the position of Detective Sergeant in charge of the Bureau of Investigations. In 2013, Mike was promoted to Captain and is now in command of both Police Operations and Support Services.
