Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

This video is about doors. Joe Posner investigates, with some help from 99% invisible, a wonderful podcast. Check them out here: http://www.99pi.org Subscribe to our channel here: http://goo.gl/0bsAjO There's a door on the 10th floor in the Vox Media office I hate so much. You probably know one of these too. But it's not our fault. And luckily, Roman Mars of 99% Invisible magically arrived in my cellphone to send me on a cross-country journey to find out the incredible surprises behind this common complaint: Don Norman started complaining about doors over 25 years ago. Doors shouldn't need instructions – the shape of them can guide you through just fine. So why do so many doors need instruction manuals right on the side of them? When most people complain about something, nothing happens. Don Norman is not most people – he's a psychologist and cognitive scientist. Don Norman thought about, and wrote about his complaints so incredibly thoroughly that he changed the world. 99% Invisible's Roman Mars helps tell the story. The costs of product failures or significant late stage design reworks based on prototype thermal testing can be avoided by applying good design practices for thermal management of electronics products in the design cycle. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for electronics cooling allows engineers the means to predict airflow and temperature of electronic components earlier in the development process to ensure reliable performance in the field. When you run into noise issues in product design often a dB-meter is used to determine sound levels. The question is: What do you do next? Just using a dB-meter and trial and error takes alot of time and hardly harvests good results. The answer: Plug in a CAM64 sound camera into your laptop and boot the new Sorama Portal. Here you can use a dB-meter as well, yet the follow-up actions show the added value: focus on the right frequencies and instantly see where the noise is coming from. More info on www.sorama.eu.

To learn more about End of Life and the rest of the Product Lifecycle, download our free Optimal Product Process eBook. http://280.gr/2hSR5Ae This video features 280 Group's Director of Products and Services, Pamela Schure and Consultant/Professor JF Ouellette. They discuss three issues that come up when a product reaches the end of its lifecycle. The End of Life stage is generally not considered the most fun part of a Product Manager's job but it still needs attention. The first issue is to decide which product or products need to be eliminated. JF compares this thankless task to putting down a badly injured horse, nobody wants to do it but it's for the best. Once you have decided which product is going to get it, you must then consider how to do the deed. Sales may be resistant to the idea of no longer selling certain products and Management will likely be wary of a loss of sales and profits but there are some ways around these obstacles. Pam suggests investigating different corners of the organization to find out the issues that everyone has all at once. Then it is easier to close it down neatly and cleanly. In the end, most people in the organization will probably support the End of Life because it means moving on to new products which is more fun and exciting. Published on Oct 22, 2013 Design-oriented firms such as Apple and IDEO have demonstrated how design thinking can affect business results. However, most managers lack a sense of how to use this new approach for issues other than product development and sales growth. Solving Problems with Design Thinking details ten real-world examples of managers who successfully applied design methods at 3M, Toyota, IBM, Intuit, and SAP; entrepreneurial start-ups such as MeYou Health; and government and social sector organizations, including the City of Dublin and Denmark's The Good Kitchen. Using design skills such as ethnography, visualization, storytelling, and experimentation, these managers produced innovative solutions to such problems as implementing strategy, supporting a sales force, redesigning internal processes, feeding the elderly, and engaging citizens. They elaborate on the challenges they faced and the processes and tools they used, providing a clear path to implementation based on the principles and practices laid out in Jeanne Liedtka and Tim Ogilvie's Designing for Growth: A Design Thinking Tool Kit for Managers. The 16th International Conference on Engineering and Product Design Education will be hosted by the Faculty of Engineering Technology of the University of Twente in Enschede, the Netherlands. The conference is organised in partnership with the Design Education Special Interest Group (DESIG) of the Design Society, and the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED). The conference brings together representatives from education, design practice, industry and government agencies that have an interest in developing new approaches and directions in design education. The conference provides a forum for participants to discuss current educational issues and to identify new approaches, address new challenges and shape new directions for design education. This year's conference theme emphasises the influence of technology on human behaviour and vice-versa. The conference aim is to reflect on the bipolarity of the challenge that contemporary designers and engineers face when shaping our future, because the development of new technology cannot be meaningful unless there are users that successfully adapt the products and services to their own lives. As a result, it is important that design educators explore interrelationships between engineering & technology, and behavioural, societal, cultural & ethical issues. Can fashion be a cause for social change? As a response to the refugee crisis, Angela Luna designed an innovative clothing line to meet the needs of refugees. In this passionate talk, she challenges the narrative of the fashion industry as being disconnected from global issues, and instead demonstrates its role as a movement for change. Angela Luna is a graduate from the Parsons Class of 2016, and winner of the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award and Eyes on Talents Innovation Award. At only 22 years old, she is a social entrepreneur and designer currently in the process of establishing a humanitarian brand with a focus on using innovative design to solve global issues. Her first collection is made to assist refugees, with unisex and one-size convertible outerwear. Each jacket responds to one or more issues that a refugee faces on a daily basis, including lack of shelter and sleep, overseas journeys, too much or not enough visibility, and traveling with children. Through widespread donations, she sees the potential for design to make a difference in the lives of the other 90%. She is dedicated to being a leading innovator in solution-based design, generating products that better the world. Process design kits model the process for the design tools. The design kit contains the models; the device parameters, symbols and pcells, verification and extraction decks, and support for the tools in the design flow. Since new processes are much more complex, a PDK is generated for each variant of a process. The PDK can be targeted to specific markets by including additional devices and process information. The result is that quality PDK creation is more important to the design success than ever before. This panel will discuss the PDK generation methodology, from the capture of the process data, inputs to the PDK generation system and creation of the PDK for delivery, to the design groups. We will investigate the challenges and look for proposed solutions which can be implemented collaboratively. Panelists Moderator: Ted Paone, Interoperability Standards Architect, Si2 Joerg Doblaski, Director of Design Support, X-FAB Group Sue Strang, Senior Engineer, Research Division, IBM Dan Clein, Technical Director, Sankalp Semiconductor Dr. David Onsongo, Qualcomm

When first contacted, Specialized was not transparent or forthright about the issue I am trying to understand. I had to pump info from the Customer Service person I contacted in December 2018. Now delivery is delayed due to a back-order situation after delayed production to fix the problems they resisted discussing with me and I want to get some answers. I think Specialized needs to get back to some basic principles that CEO Mike Sinyard speaks to in this 2015 video when he talks about the "ABC's" (Arrogance, Bureaucracy, and Complacency) at 4:55 when asked of the biggest threats to Specialized: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_npNof3h6A Specialized may deliver a good product-- once you can get it delivered and I bet they are engineering their way out of the Levo noise & cover issues, but making a bike sale while knowing the sale will be delayed, not disclosing the delayed delivery to dealers or customers, the reasons for a delay, holding a customer's money while they figure out the solution, and not providing a revised delivery date are deceitful ways to treat their customers! I wonder if they took good care of customers that got the lemons too? Check out our other videos here http://vid.io/xq4z Plans of Action for Suspended Amazon Sellers Egyptian Goddess Standard: Design Patent Issues & Plans of Action for Suspended Sellers In terms of design patents, the standard that Amazon refers to is called the Egyptian Goddess Standard. Basically, what Amazon wants to know is whether an ordinary observer can tell the difference between two products. Are they substantially similar? Before someone starts selling a product on Amazon, they should make sure that their product does not look anything like another product that already has a design patent. This will help the seller to avoid getting their account suspended down the road. When drafting a Plan of Action to Amazon, a suspended seller needs to use this standard to show how the products are different. You and an ordinary person can clearly see the difference between the two products. Zhuo explains how answering those fundamental questions at the outset reveals the most urgent problems to tackle — and yields features that truly enhance user satisfaction. The speaker has accumulated years of first-hand knowledge and experience about what goes wrong in the field. This seminar represents efforts on his part to prevent perpetuation of the problems that attendees are bound to benefit from. The scope of the seminar includes elevated post-tensioned slabs and beams as well as post-tensioned foundation systems. The focus is on field issues that often arise, which may affect the performance of post-tensioned structures. The layout of the strands and the interaction of the tendons with the penetrations required by the plumber, electrician, and other trades are covered. The seminar primarily consist of construction photographs to highlight what an engineer should look for during observation and what can occur if corrective measures are not taken. Designers benefit greatly from this seminar, because it makes them aware of measures they can take in the design phase to keep eventual field problems from occurring.
