Highlights of Dezeen's talk on climate change for Good Design for a Bad World
The products that designers help create are the biggest contributors to climate change, according to research presented at our Good Design for a Bad World talks at Dutch Design Week last month. The claim came from designer Babette Porcelijn, who has published a book that explores the factors driving climate change and offering potential solutions to the problem. "I made an impact top ten," said Porcelijn, presenting a graph of the ten biggest causes of climate change. "Number one is products. It's stuff. I'm an industrial designer so I was really educated to make these things. But it has the number one impact." Electronic products such as mobile phones and computers are among the biggest contributors, she said, adding that her list contains more surprises, with animal farming coming second. "Number two is meat," she said. "Then comes houses, then comes the car." The findings are contained in her book, De Verborgen Impact (Hidden Impact), which explores the hidden impact of human activities on earth's climate, which most people are unaware of. Using Virtual Reality for Product Design
Devices such as the Oculus rift and HTC Vive have enabled consumers and professionals alike to embrace the technology, experiment with it, and discover its potential. At Bresslergroup we’ve integrated VR into our workflow. Our CAD planning still begins in our chosen CAD platform of choice – readying the design for VR requires no extra work. But instead of iterating with physical materials, we can now quickly jump into VR to explore variants more quickly. VR makes quick work of creating and playing around with variants to test our assumptions. Native CAD files can be imported seamlessly into a VR environment in just a few minutes. Once in VR, different variants and configurations can be evaluated side by side in full scale. You can see in the video how we can manipulate and move the seat in this design for a walk-in shower, and reach for shelves and grab bars while in VR, adding to the immersive experience. When designing products such as these, not only is access important but so is the ability to reach critical areas. Italcementi's innovative products at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai China
A new type of cement has been set up which, by bonding special resins into a newly conceived mix, allows manufacturing solid insulated yet light-transmitting construction panels. The new i.light "transparent cement," was used to build the Italian Pavilion for the World Expo 2010 opening in Shanghai. The new product developed at the Bergamo-based laboratories ensures transparency through an innovative cement / admixtures mix design. The excellent flow properties of the mix allow bonding a plastic resin matrix into a final panel that combines the typical robustness of cementitious materials and the possibility of filtering light both inwards and outwards. 3,774 transparent panels made from 189 tons of "transparent cement" covered a total surface area of 1,887 square metres, approx. 40% of the entire Pavilion, creating a sequence of lights and shadows in constant evolution during the day. The transparent effect is more evident when it is dark and, seen from the outside, the building will allow the interior lights to filter through while, from inside, during the day, it will show the changes in the levels of daylight. http://www.italcementigroup.com

Shanghai 2015
In 2015 while working in the FCA Product Design Office UX department, I was tasked to go to Shanghai to set up interior and exterior displays and networking for the Jeep "Galileo" concept. My goal was to create a solution that kept every display in sync, both on the concept vehicle, as well as on the external large screen HUD and other displays. This all had to happen automatically activated by one power switch. The Jeep concept display was an elegant blend of modern UX and artistic expression. Background music by Daft Punk.

Product Development – How Product Developers affect Food Safety
Research and Development is the start point for the creation of new products, the modification of existing products and the introduction/modification of new/existing packaging. The introduction of new ingredients and packaging can be disastrous for a food company if it is not done methodically as it can lead to the introduction of new hazards into the process. Therefore, the R&D Deparrment must be in continuous communication with key stakeholders in the manufacturing side to ensure that the new introductions are not only compatible with existing processes but also that a hazard analysis is done to ensure food safety. On the other hand, keeping food safety and creativity in harmony can prove tricky as food safety considerations may change the original concept for what he development or modifications where conceived for may change to keep the consumer out of harmsway . This seminar will focus on the role of R&D in the manufacturing process and will show a practical tool to ensure that all aspects from creation to launch are taken into account when introducting new concepts into existing operations. Download the Presentation Slides and Certificate of Attendance from the IFSQN website: https://www.ifsqn.com/forum/index.php/files/file/301-product-development-%E2%80%93-how-product-developers-affect-food-safety/

A Conversation between Designer and Product Manager with Bradley Horowitz & Irene Au
The relationship between the functions of product management and design vary greatly amongst organizations. Clearly, both are essential to the development of successful products and services. In this fireside chat, we’ll hear from two experienced executives from these respective domains. They’ll discuss what they’ve seen work and what they’ve seen fail, as well as offer actionable insights into how to improve one’s own organization. Bradley Horowitz, VP of Product Management at Google, and Irene Au, Design Partner at Khosla Ventures, discuss. -- In 2018, Slush brought together 20,000 attendees, including 3,100 startups, 1,800 investors and 650 journalists from over 130 countries. The cold and dark Helsinki welcomed these tech-heads to celebrate on Dec 3-5, 2018 with hundreds of side-events and activities around the city. HOTWIND of Shanghai Qibao Vanke Store by RIGI Design
Chief Designer: Liu Kai Design Team: Larry Chen, Chen Pan Design Company: RIGI Design (www.rigi-design.com) Location: Shanghai, China Area: 1038㎡ HOTWIND is a rapidly- growing fast retailing brand in China which includes various types of products. RIGI has been servicing HOTWIND for many years, during which 3 image upgrading have been made. Main purpose of this upgrading is to meet new requirements result from the brand’s consumption upgrading in china. Basing on research, RIGI analyzes that, future customers of this brand are mainly family consumer groups. The pace of development of online sales in China is very rapid, so how to define offline terminal of HOTWIND has become ultimate purpose of the design. According to HOTWIND’s actual investigation, most of the customers visited the store were accompanied by friends, colleagues, lovers and family. So the design strategy of RIGI is to make sure whether or not the terminal meets the requirements of offline social behavior, and to offer a new shopping experience which meets requirements of the new age through combining life scenes and social roles. In space design, RIGI cuts the big space into small space groups with different functions. People’s understanding of scales is not unlimited; cutting big category into small spaces is because that tonality and relationship of the product could be showed friendlier in smaller space groups. And the combination of big and small space would help to express characteristics of the products of different category. In the selection of material and color, a series of color collocation is derived from theme color -- green. Through combination of wood and green of different degree, a warm and abstract concept of home is created. The space does not adopt any complicated decoration; instead, it uses the simplest optimized proportion of point, line and plane to further highlight the sense of wholeness of the brand to avoid over deco. The use of plants and simple symbols makes customers feels the brand is conveying a sense a home all the time. RIGI always attached great importance to the modular processing of space and props system. RIGI sets the unit of the shelves, and uses different display modules to form the whole display system to satisfy differentiated demand between different brands and different terminals.
