Recommending product sizes to customers is an important problem in the e-commerce domain. Though e-commerce is becoming increasingly popular, products such as apparel and shoes remain challenging to buy online and record high return rates. A key customer pain point that leads to excessive product returns is the size-fit problem. This talk (based on the linked WWW 2018 paper) describes some recent machine learning models that were built for product size recommendation. Dr. Lavanya Tekumalla is a Machine Learning Scientist/independant consultant. She has worked in the industry for over 7 years in various roles at Amazon.com (Seattle, Bangalore), InMobi (Bangalore) and Myntra (Bangalore) that she thoroughly enjoyed. She has received a PhD from the Machine Learning Lab @ CSA, IISc, Bangalore and a masters in Computer Graphics from the University of Utah. Her research interests include Natural Language Understanding, Machine Learning - particularly Probabilistic Modeling and efficient techniques for approximate inference.

The ACM Recommender System conference (RecSys) is the premier international forum for the presentation of new research results, systems and techniques in the broad field of recommender systems. Recommendation is a particular form of information filtering, that exploits past behaviors and user similarities to generate a list of information items that is personally tailored to an end-user’s preferences. As RecSys brings together the main international research groups working on recommender systems, along with many of the world’s leading e-commerce companies, it has become the most important annual conference for the presentation and discussion of recommender system research. RecSys 2014, the eighth conference in this series, was held in Silicon Valley. It brought together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to present their latest results and identify new trends and challenges in providing recommendation components in a range of innovative application contexts. In addition to the main technical track, RecSys 2014 program featured keynote and invited talks, tutorials covering state-of-the-art in this domain, a workshop program, an industrial track and a doctoral symposium. Published papers went through a rigorous full peer review process. The conference proceedings, which are available both on a USB drive and via the ACM Digital Library, are expected to be widely read and cited. ACM RecSys 2014 took place at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Foster City, Silicon Valley, California from Oct 6-10, 2014. To accommodate the numerous researchers who could not register for this year’s technical conference and to possibly mitigate local traffic, the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday program was streamed real-time on the official ACM RecSys YouTube Channel. BEEFING UP THE TIEGE TEAM | VLOG 192 For the first time in six months, Aaron is at Tiege Hanley’s HQ in Chicago, and everything has GROWN, from office space to warehouse space to the number of team members. TOUR DE TIEGE As Aaron strolls through the warehouse, he chats with Tom G the Warehouse Coordinator, Josh who handles influencer marketing, and Hector who handles warehouse prep. Seeing first-hand how the warehouse has expanded is jaw-dropping – added space plus massive racking system and inventory levels. Not only does Tiege Hanley now have distinct departments, but they also added a new office space which encompasses finance, development, and analytics. The main office is primarily the location for marketing, customer service as well as Kelley’s office. In the new office space, the graphics define the area. Meetings can be held in the ‘AM/PM’ conference room or perhaps the ‘SCRUB’ conference room. And one of the murals features the owners (in color) with many of you (in black & white) who helped to build the company. Aaron runs into Rob who discusses how he’s been looking forward to this quarterly meeting. Then he visits Dave the Supply Chain Manager who describes how his focus is making sure deliveries are on-time and accurate as well as product development. Tiege Hanley is the leader in accuracy with only 1 error out of 1,000. Additionally, Dave hinted that new product marketing should emerge by the end of 2019 with new product launches set for the beginning of 2020. Heading over to the main office, Akin the Director of Digital Marketing touches on his work with social media, SEO, conversion rates, paid search, and leads. He says that Tiege Hanley is ‘rocking’ and ‘killing’ SEO. Next is one of Tiege Hanley’s newest employees John who is their copywriter. As he put it, he touches and reads all forms of written word for Tiege Hanley. Heading further back into the main office, Aaron meets with Lawrence who is the Affiliate Marketing Manager, a fitness model, and affiliated with Bodybuilding.com. Claudia is the Customer Service Specialist, and she handles customer emails which the #1 question she gets asked is ‘where’s my order’. Employee #3 Tom is next up – he’s the Customer Service Supervisor. He helps draft customer support language, and he handles the Handsomeness Hotline calls. Thereafter, Aaron visits with Sarah who is the Executive Assistant to all the partners. She says that she always ‘stays two steps ahead’. YOUTUBE BUSINESS QUESTIONS Q1 Lyric Translator -- Occasionally I go through bouts of depression that affect my life (such as weight gain & lower work ethic). Do you still deal with depression? How do you overcome and prevent it from affecting your work ethic? A1 Aaron asserts that depression runs in his family which is a ‘chemical thing’ but that his Darkest Days depression was ‘situational’. Working out and taking care of yourself physically are his biggest recommendations because being healthy physically transcends into being mentally healthier. Therapy and medication may be necessary for chemical depression. Q2 Yonche22 -- You recently got very active on your AlphaM Instagram page. Can you tell us more about this strategy? Did you hire someone for this purpose? A2 Aaron is taking Instagram (IG) more seriously recently by hiring an assistant. He never viewed IG as ‘super important’ so he never devoted a lot of time to it. But it’s become increasingly obvious the he should not have all of his content in one place. He is now making IG and IG TV a priority. Q3 Gordios -- Please talk about YouTube’s algorithm changes. Also what changes and tactics have helped you the most? A3 YouTube wants to keep the viewer watching videos on their platform and to make the experience ‘pleasant’. They’ve conducted study groups and research that have been the catalyst for their algorithm changes. The algorithm changes have caused Aaron’s videos to be suggested less, with ‘look alike’ content being suggested instead. Also, the content creator’s page used to have a recommendation engine with similar content creators suggested. This feature was eliminated causing Aaron to have an immediate drop in subscribers-- his subs are down 50%. Further his views are down 30%, and watch times have dipped too. One way to address this challenge is to personalize the way we portray the titles on our service. Our image personalization engine is driven by online learning and contextual bandits. Like many other Netflix machine learning algorithms, it started as a prototype and needed to transition into reliable production jobs outfitted with monitoring, alerts, model checking, retraining, detecting stale models, system resiliency, and more. We will discuss how we approach making machine learning systems at Netflix ready for production and how we scaled our artwork personalization engine to reliably handle over 20 million personalized image requests per second.
