Companies and private individuals alike often have product ideas and the requirement to develop new products, but lack the clear plan of action that is required to develop them. This lecture introduces the process of developing an idea for a product (or service) into a commercial reality. Practical consideration is given to market research, treatment of intellectual property, route to market and finance. At the end of the lecture attendees should be able to assess the value of their idea and potentially develop it into a product. About the speaker Pádraig Leahy Chartered Engineer Pádraig is a mechanical engineering graduate of CIT with a strong background in the manufacturing sector. He frequently works with established companies and entrepreneurs to develop their products and the manufacturing processes to produce them. Additionally he provides mentoring and training in the area of new product development to both Enterprise Ireland and the Local Enterprise Offices.

DIT's Product Design programme is the first of its kind in Ireland. Graduates of the programme have gone on to a variety of successful careers in Ireland and abroad. In the course of this four year honours degree, students are immersed in the various disciplines of product design through a unique interdisciplinary approach -- students develop their knowledge and skill sets through modules in the areas of design, engineering and business. This integrated method produces product designers who have the ability and confidence to be both creative and innovative in whatever role they choose to pursue. It gives them the necessary ability to face the challenges of designing new products and bringing them to market. Graduates of the program have proven themselves. equally comfortable in the design studio, the engineering office and the boardroom. Students learn how to produce accurate physical models of their designs using the extensive studio and prototyping facilities. They also use industry standard design software to bring their projects to fruition. In the capstone module of the programme, students conceptualise, design and develop a novel product. A number of students have developed successful products in this project which they have gone on to pursue and develop further upon graduation. While the final project is important for the students' individual development, a series of team projects over the course of the program help the students to develop interpersonal skills along with an appreciation of team dynamics. Students of the programme have won and been shortlisted for prestigious national and international awards including the Enterprise Ireland All Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, the James Dyson award, the International Forum for Design Concept awards in Hannover, Germany and the Staples Global Eco-easy Challenge in Washington DC, USA. Students of the programme have won and are regular finalists in the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise awards in which they must demonstrate the ability to form their own company, design and develop a new product and produce a viable business plan in tandem. It's got a massive variety of fresh produce and really delicious goods to try so let's go in and check it out. So we're here in the Milk Market in Limerick with, what are your names, sorry. I'm Teresa Storey and I'm Athina Storey. Nice to meet you. What are you selling here today? We sell jams, pickles, mustard, cordials, anything we can bottle and put in a jar. Your business is called the Green Apron. And when did you get started? My mom started back in 1977 and she ran it for years and years and when I moved home it was a nice small home-based business while I was having kids. What are you selling here in the market? Here in the market we're selling a variety of different meat products and fish products and seaweed, We've got a range of Irish salamis. We've got a beautiful range of pates, of fish and meat, We've got fresh sausages.  We also do smoked fish, pickled fish, seaweed. That's pretty much it. The seaweed really interests me. Is it popular? It is actually really popular. Yeah. The dilisk, like we have regulars who come in for it every week. Really? And get quite annoyed if we don't have any. And I try to send them to another place that has seaweed as well but they always come back and they want ours because apparently ours is better. And its cheaper. Great. Did you hear that? The market was originally set up in 1840s along with The Pig Market, The Potato Market, The Butter Market and this one was originally called The Corn Market because after the famine, they used a lot of the old linen mills to grind Indian corn for famine relief. And then the name was changed to The Milk Market and it's the only one of all of those that's survived the whole time. And it's getting ever more popular since they covered it over a couple of years ago. More and more people are coming to enjoy it and despite all the Tescos and shopping centres opening up, you can't really beat its personal charm. My name is Sinead Ni Garvey. Nice to meet you Sinead What are you selling here? I'm selling a selection of Irish farmhouse cheeses. They look beautiful So the Saint Ola goat's cheese is my own family's goat's cheese, an organic goat farm. And then I sell a selection of cows, goats and sheep cheeses. There's a bigger demand now for sheep than goats cheeses. Oh right. There's more cheesemakers per capita in Ireland now than there is in France. So we've become a real cheese nation. Farmers are getting better money for their milk than they are when they're selling to the dairy than the creamery. So what are you selling here? I'm selling all hand made produce. We have breads which we make with organic flour. They look amazing My husband makes all the breads. And then we have savouries. We have lots of pastries. We have sweet pastries. We have cakes. And everything is made from scratch at home in our family bakery. Lovely. What are you selling here? Wood fired pizza. Oh, it looks beautiful. I see the toppings are kind of unusual , aren't they? Yeah, I do the standard ones as well. I do the buffalo mozeralla, tomato, basil, chorizo, mozarella. And then the carmelised onion based ones as well, Brie cheese, gorgonzola, goat's cheese. PLEASE READ IT FIRST BEFORE POSTING QUESTIONS. THANK YOU ** Q: So when you sell an item on ebay and select a shipping method do you go to any postal place and give it to them? A: You can print and prepay for the item at home, then take it post office and mail it, or print a mailing label and take it post office and pay for shipping there. Q: What happens if you sell the item, sent it to their home, and they do a charge back and lie about not receiving item when they did? what do you do? A: All you can do is use tracking to confirm delivery, and hope people are honest. You also have the ebay rating for the person. So hopefully that will vet out who is scamming others. Q: So if i don't have a printer i can just go to my local post office and ship it there? What information do i need when using this method? A: You need a mailing label with sender and receiver address. This can be hand written if you want. Then post office will place the postage sticker on the package. Q: So after purchasing the shipping label, if I go to my local post office, can I just hand it in and no additional costs will apply? A: Once you purchase that postal label, it's paid for, and you need to stick it on the box, and take it to the post office. It's paid already so you don't pay anymore,. You are just dropping the package off to have it shipped out. Q: With all the fees and postage, how do you figure asking price to not end up losing money? A: Your asking price is solely dependent on what other sellers are selling the same item for. If you ask for more than what others are selling at, nobody will buy your item. If you are not comfortable selling it at the market price, then you are better off not selling it. Q: I am confused when it comes to the shipping cost. You originally set the shipping cost at $9, but once you chose the way you wanted to ship the item it came out to $10 plus. So did the difference come out of your pocket, or did the buyers? A: Yes, I paid out the difference. When you preset a shipping cost, you really don't know where that winning buyer is located. If that person lives in your state, then shipping is cheap and you can make money on the shipping. But if the person lives across the country, then it can cost a lot. When you preset a postage price in your auction, you have to be prepared for this to happen. Just choose a reasonable shipping rate so it will attract buyers and cover most of your cost. For people that might say...how about charge more for shipping....well be careful as you might price yourself way higher than all the other sellers and never sell your item. My only advice is don't get too hung up on loosing couple dollars on the shipping, if you are able to sell your item, and you made some money, then it's money in your pocket. Versus not selling anything and have that item sit at home and you made $0. Q: Do you need to get your own boxes? And also how do you know how much you'll have to charge shipping? A: Yes you supply your own box, unless you ship using USPS Priority mail, then you use there boxes. As to how much you charge shipping, you can go on USPS and get an estimate. The difficulty is estimating where the winning bidder is from (near you or opposite side of the country which will be higher shipping). You can just charge a flat rate shipping and expect to either pay a few dollars more to ship at the end if the person lives far away. If you charge too much shipping right off the bat, then you risk no one buying it. Q: Can you use FedEx or any shipping method that you like? A: You can ship however you like as long as you get it to the buyer in a timely manner. Preferably with tracking information. Q: So will I have the money in my PayPal account before I purchase the shipping label or do they have to receive it first before I get paid? A: You don't ship until you get the money deposited in your Paypal. Ebay will also only give you the option to ship after payment has been made by the buyer. Q: You say you can pick up free boxes at the post office. Are flat rate boxes free or not? A: Priority Mail Flat Rate shipping is a fixed shipping rate you pay USPS. In order for you to ship using the Flat rate with USPS, you need to use their 'free' boxes which you can pick up for free at USPS. The reason for using their box is they predetermine the size and how much you can fit in it to qualify for their flat rate. When you go to the post office, you will see a shelves with these boxes which you can take as many as you want.

When people think about importing goods from overseas, they usually jump to China, and they don’t consider other countries like India. But this is a big mistake! The India export market is huge, and they are one of the biggest biggest exporters in the world. You can import items very cheaply, which is why I very strongly recommend considering Indian exports and not getting “stuck” on just importing from China. Tip #1 to help you import from India: Know the markets that India are world leaders in. There are several industries where India are world leaders in manufacturing and exporting. If you’re selling items in these industries and looking to import, consider doing trade in India. Here are the industries that India are world leaders in: * Generic pharmaceutical drugs, * Cotton textiles, * Cereal * Local spices, * Cosmetics, * Paper products, * Toiletries and * Leather shoes & clothes. (I think that there is a big opportunity for importing generic pharmaceutical drugs, relabelling them yourself and selling them via Amazon’s FBA program… just saying!) Tip #2 to help you import from India: Do due diligence on your suppliers. The same goes for importing products from China: Do due diligence on your importers. Pick up the phone, give them a call. Look up their address in Google Maps and ensure a factory is located there. If you’re using SaleHoo to find Indian suppliers, then they will have done due diligence for you. If you’re Alibaba India, look for gold suppliers who have an 80%+ response rate. And if you’re using suppliers from Trade India, look for suppliers that have Trust Badges, Premium Seller emblems and that have been on the site for at least one year. Tip #3 to help you import from India: Start with the minimum order quantity and get a sample product first. It doesn’t matter whether you’re importing from China or India, you should be getting a sample product shipped to you first to test the quality. If you like the sample product, then start out with a supplier’s minimum order quantity. If that goes well, then increase the order size. Starting out with the minimum order quantity protects yourself against bad manufacturers. Tip #4 to help you import from India: Negotiate prices and do research on shipping options. In India, everything is negotiable. Be prepared to negotiate the initial price down. Shopping around and getting quotes from other suppliers will help you when negotiating. Do the same thing for shipping: Get your own quotes so that you can be in a strong position in negotiating when doing trade in India. Tip #5 to help you import from India: Don’t rely on deadlines or time frames. When doing trade in India, business can be surprisingly lax and carefree. In India, family takes precedent over business. If a family issue came up, it would not be unusual for a business meeting to be cancelled. But there is a funny cultural quirk: While they can be lax and show up late, as a Westerner, you are expected to show up on time. It may not seem “fair” but it is best to not question it. Because business can be lax, it means that you shouldn’t rely on deadlines and time frames. This may put some people off Indian exports, but there are many upsides to working with Indian suppliers. Their exports are cheap, great quality and they are very loyal business partners. Consider the pro’s and con’s. Tip #6 to help you import from India: They don’t like to say “no.” Just like when importing from China, when you’re importing from India, they don’t like saying “no” when doing business. If an Indian supplier says “possibly” or “we’ll see” or “I’ll try” then you should push for clarification. If you push for a yes or a no, they will give it to you. Try as best as you can to do this in a non-confrontational way, when doing trade in India it is frowned upon to be confrontational.

Because having an Amazon Pro Merchant Account is a necessary prerequisite to winning the Buy Box. Winning this is crucial as a new seller for two reasons: 1) About 80% of sales are made using the Buy Box - so not winning this means you miss out on crucial sales opportunities. 2) When you are the featured seller in the Buy Box the number of reviews you have are not featured, so it means that new sellers won’t be discriminated against for having little-to-no reviews by buyers. Even though it costs money compared to opening a free seller account, I strongly recommend it because you’ll make more money with one. Second thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Have the documents ready when applying for an Amazon account When creating an Amazon account, you will need the following documents: 1) Photos of a national ID (like a passport or a drivers license). 2) A bank statement with your address on it. So before you start an account, take photos and download your latest bank statement and upload these documents when Amazon asks for them. Third thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Act fast - DON’T wait! Amazon is regularly changing their requirements. For example… * In 2014 they changed Personal Care into a restricted category. * In 2016 they made it so new FBA sellers couldn’t send in their first shipment during the 4th quarter. * And in 2017, they changed it so you need to upload proof of ID documents during the account creation process. The sooner you get started, the easier it’ll be. Fourth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Pick your Amazon business model There are several types of business models to pursue when opening your Amazon store (private labeling, wholesale selling, dropshipping & retail arbitrage). Before you open your Amazon business, you need to pick the right one that meets your skillset and access to resources. For example, private labeling has the advantage of being very hands-off. But it requires a large upfront investment. While a dropshipping business takes more time to manage, but it requires a lot less money to get started. Weigh up the pros & cons. Fifth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Get a credit card (or a debit card) When you sell on Amazon you need to pay selling fees. To pay these, Amazon requires you have either a credit card or a debit card. You cannot use a Payoneer card or a prepaid debit card. If you don’t have this, then consider opening an Aliexpress dropshipping store on your own website. Sixth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Figure out a plan to manage your cash flow Don’t be afraid by the word “cash flow.” All we mean is that you need to have a plan for how you are going to pay for the items you are going to sell. Why? Because Amazon holds your money for 2 weeks as a new seller. This means: 1) If you’re dropshipping, you need to have money to use in the meantime to order the items the customer has purchased. 2) If you’re private labeling, it’s prudent to have money set aside to replace inventory if your product gets super-successful super-fast. While you could save up hundreds to thousands of dollars, the easiest way to manage this is with a credit card. If you don’t have a credit card then I recommend working on your credit score and making it a priority to get one. Seventh thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Check if the category you want to sell in is restricted Some item categories on Amazon are unrestricted (ungated categories) and you can sell in them without submitting an application (e.g. home & gardening). But some categories are restricted (gated categories). Some categories are very easy to get unrestricted in (like clothing & accessories) but some are more difficult (e.g. food & grocery). Be sure to check before getting started. Eighth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Set aside time each day/week to manage/grow your Amazon business. Make sure you set aside time each day to fulfill orders & answer emails/questions. And set aside time each week to grow your business. For many this will be working on weekends. Doing this can be challenging: But it’s a right of passage that most business owners go through. So don’t get discouraged: The rewards are well worth it!

The Business Model Canvas is comprised of 9 key segments: The left hand section of the Business Model Canvas is the Infrastructure section and comprises three key areas: Key Activities: The most important activities in executing a company's value proposition. Key Resources: The resources that are necessary to create value for the customer. Partner Network: In order to optimize operations and reduce risks of a business model, organization usually cultivate buyer-supplier relationships so they can focus on their core activity. The middle section of the canvas describes the business offering and is the value proposition delivered to different customer segments. Value Propositions: The collection of products and services a business offers to meet the needs of its customers. According to Osterwalder, (2004), a company's value proposition is what distinguishes itself from its competitors. What is Trademark law? By Hesham Elrafei https://www.linkedin.com/in/heshamelrafei Trademarks are brand names or designs , which are applied to products and services. A trademark is a distinguished word, phrase , a symbol , a fragrance or a logo , or a combination of these elements. which is used in trade/business , to indicate the origin/source of the brand, in order to distinguish and identify the brand owner in the market. Trademark law protects the consumer, by preventing the public confusion , as to the origin or quality of a product. and it also reward the brand owner , by maintaining his business successful reputation in the market. Trademarks legally conflict with each other, if the use of one trademark causes public confusion as to the product being offered in the market ( likelihood of confusion ) The american law protects trademarks even if its not registered, which is also known as the Common Law Trademark Rights, in this case registration is not required to establish trademark rights, seeing that the first who use a trademark in commerce owns it. On the other hand, Most countries require registration of a trademark , as it provides legal certainty and reinforces the position of the right holder . therefore any subsequent users who cause confusion as to the product or its origin , will be forced to stop using the mark , and might be liable to pay the trademark owner damages. Lastly, Trademark is not absolute as its subject to various limits and defenses, such as abandonment, limitations on geographic area in which the mark is used , and fair use , which means that the more common and generic the word is , the less likely the trademark owner may be able to regulate it. This doctrine also protects "nominative" use of the trademark name, as is often done by competitors in marketing materials.
