** GET THE GEAR ON AMAZON** https://www.amazon.com/shop/jimcyr We dive into the kind of maps you can load onto your Garmin GPS device and Basecamp. There are 2 types of maps: paid vs free. Paid Maps: You can go and buy the various mapping products from Garmin, including the subscription service called Birdseye Imagery where you can choose between satellite or topo images. Loading these maps onto your device is fairly easy via Basecamp Watch this video on Birdseye http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_806522&feature=iv&src_vid=oXgknaGVXBU&v=rP5_Bkct19M However for hiking, topo images may be a better option than the satellite simply because they do not provide the detail we'd want. Also depending on your area, you may have low-res satellite images. Birdseye Topo is much more useful for hiking, but the main disadvantage is not knowing how old these maps are based on your area. Luckily, there is an easier & free method to get the same type of map. Free Maps: Making a Garmin Custom Map using Google Earth is a good option which can take a few minutes to build. In our example, we've used the same data source to grab the latest published topo maps, cut a slice and made the KML file to import into Basecamp Watch this video on Garmin Custom Maps http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_286520&feature=iv&src_vid=oXgknaGVXBU&v=dLzvg2vnUDM The disadvantage is that Custom Maps are picky and you might have to tweak your KML file to get the results that you want. The other free option is to simply search for "Free Garmin Maps". A number of sites like http://gpsfiledepot.com/ and other sites will have repositories with submitted maps. Depending on your area this might be a useful resource. If you are in Canada, there is the Ibycus Topo product (http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/) , where the same government data source was used to grab the GIS (shapefiles) data instead of the raster images and produced Garmin maps using free tools. The advantage is that these are vector maps and will behave like the Garmin products like City Navigator or Garmin Topo. Meaning that you can zoom in tight and not have pixel distortion like the Garmin Custom Map or Birdseye Topo. Another Free option which is to use the Garmin Openstreetmap (http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/) . This is a free service that compiles garmin maps from openstreetmap.org Depending on your area, the detail might be lacking, however being an open source project, anybody including yourself can contribute to the map in a few clicks. Installing maps on our device is straight forward, take the img files and drop them into a folder named "Garmin" on your SD card. You can drop the file in the Garmin folder on the device, but there are limitation and you'll have to rename your file gmapsupp.img. If you are using windows, you will find a .exe file as part of the download package to install in the right spot so that it appears in basecamp next time you start up the program. By placing your .img files on a SD card, you can rename them making it easier to manage. Also you can swap the card and insert into Garmin models. - - - - - - - - - - - Subscribe on YouTube (new video every Sunday!) http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thecyr Google+: http://profiles.google.com/jimcyr Twitter: http://twitter.com/thecyr Check out more videos from the gang at http://avoidingchores.com Thanks to our supporters http://www.inreachcanada.com/ http://delorme.com http://www.keenfootwear.com/ca - - - - - - - - - - - Avoiding Chores is a collection of interests from a group of guys who do everything possible NOT to do chores. MAP LINKS: https://hikingguy.com/hiking-gear/how-to-get-free-garmin-gps-maps-for-hiking/ WINDOWS INSTALLATION TIPS ON THE ARTICLE TOO (many thanks to Dave T!) The good news is that if you own a Garmin GPS device, there's a way to get free Garmin GPS maps. And in most cases, the free maps are much better than the expensive Garmin maps. I'm a big fan of Garmin GPS devices, but I always found it disappointing that they charged extra for maps. Garmin doesn't publicize it, but their GPS units are setup to take any maps in the correct format. Here's how to get and install these free hiking maps in an easy, step-by-step process.

** GET THE GEAR ON AMAZON** https://www.amazon.com/shop/jimcyr In this video, we'll look at an undocumented feature for the fenix / tactix; loading maps. The device only has about 20MB of storage space, you probably don't want to load up more than 10MB of maps and still be able to load waypoints, tracks, etc.... I think 5MB would be enough. Luckily there are some free OSM maps that have been rendered to be light to accommodate the greyscale display. You will need to have the following free applications installed: BASECAMP, MAP INSTALL & MAP MANAGER. Step ONE: Download the OSM fenix map for your area from http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/maps-garmin-fenix Step TWO: Download GARMIN MAP MANAGER. This is a free download. Unpack/unzip the archive. Double click the .gmap file and it will install the file into the GARMIN BASECAMP folder. Step THREE: You can verify that the map has been installed by going into BASECAMP. Now we need to transfer map tiles to the fenix / tactix, we'll use MAP INSTALL for this. Make sure you plug your fenix / tactic to your computer via USB. Step FOUR: Using MAP INSTALL, select Advanced / Partial install and select the OSM fenix map. From here select the tiles you want to transfer to the device. Click CONTINUE and allow the tranfer to complete. Step FIVE: Open the GARMIN drive on your computer (the fenix /tactix mass storage) and go into the GARMIN subfolder. You will see the OSM FENIX * .img file. Rename this to gmapsupp.img Disconnect the device from the USB and allow it to restart. You should see the new maps once you are on the map data page. - - - - - - - - - - - SUBSCRIBE!! ** GET THE GEAR ON AMAZON** https://www.amazon.com/shop/jimcyr UPDATE: SEPT 30 2016 FORUM DISCUSSION THREAD: http://forums.avoidingchores.com/index.php?p=/discussion/21/google-map-engine-service-alternative-for-turn-by-turn-navigation?new=1 Note the URL change where you can store "MY MAPS", otherwise the process is the same to export to the xml. (https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/) We look at how to take Google Maps turn by turn directions or route and import that into Garmin Basecamp where you can then transfer to your garmin device. Many, especially motorcycle riders use this method to build their riding routes. Now with the new version of google maps, certain features got moved around, and if you are logged into your google account, you should be able to see MY SAVED MAPS when clicking on the mao search bar. Now if you don't it, then you can simple go to https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/ where we will end up anyway. What we need to do is create a directions map using map engine. Click on the ADD DIRECTIONS button and start to enter in the left column box, the way points or addresses you want to map along your route. Google map will start to create the turn by turn directions. Once done, you can click on the FOLDER icon and select EXPORT TO KML. We want to export the directions we've just created. Once the file has been downloaded to our computer, we can now switch to GARMIN BASECAMP and import the KML file into our collection. FILE | IMPORT via Garmin Basecamp Now you should see the track and waypoints. From this point, you should be able to work with the data; create routes from the track or waypoints and transfer the data to your Garmin device. - - - - - - - - - - - SUBSCRIBE!! Although, the Garmin Etrex 10 does not have a slot for external memory cards, or any commercially available maps for it, it has some internal memory space for its own operational purposes, and for the storage of its useless world wide base map. By replacing the original base map file with your own map file, you can load very, very detailed topographic maps to your Garmin eTrex 10. Read more at http://slowfoodsurvivalist.com/?p=275

Google makes it easy to create a custom driving route map to any number of destinations but makes it almost impossible to transfer that route to a stand-alone GPS device. In this short video I show how to do it . Please Note; At 4:49 I show to send to device. That is incorrect. You need to click the 'activity' icon in the top menu and select 'direct'. Then click the route in the left menu and choose 'create track from selected route'. Then make sure the created track matches your selected track. Then send to device. GPS Visualizer now requires a Google API key. A good alternative is https://mapstogpx.com/

How to add property or boundary lines to your Garmin GPS. As far as I'm aware, this only works with Garmin. As you see, this is great for adding a single property or a handful of properties. It isn't a technique that will allow you to instantly add plat lines of an entire county or state at once. If you're watching this and now how to do such a thing, without buying a microSD card containing the info, please let us know! There's a lot of people out there saying that this is the best gps sport watch 2019 that money can buy...at least right now. It probably is, but it does come with some downsides. Most notably, it is a very big watch, although essentially the size of the fenix 3 HR. The Garmin fenix5X does have all of the features of the fenix 5 and fenix 5S, however, it also ads detailed maps. They allow you to navigate to points of interest, create round-trip routes, and see generally the landscape. You have a few different types of maps pre-loaded, but nothing as detailed as a satellite image. In any case, it is a triathlon watch, outdoor watch, sport watch, activity tracker, sleep tracker, smartwatch, and heart rate monitor, all in one, which is pretty amazing. We're thinking it will make its debut on the list of best gps watches 2019 or perhaps even best smartwatch 2019. I don't think it's the best gps watch for triathlons only because of its size, though it certain can handle those events. It's more of a lifestyle and outdoor watch than anything. ▬ OTHER REVIEWS ▬ Garmin fenix 5S Review: https://youtu.be/qRYlOym7Mc8?list=PLuARCRjO97L1yUQeV6OJsifZgxHPkahc2 Garmin fenix 5 Review: https://youtu.be/tR0i6IocKNc?list=PLuARCRjO97L1yUQeV6OJsifZgxHPkahc2 Garmin fenix 3 HR Review: https://youtu.be/uiFcQnEhBXY?list=PLuARCRjO97L1yUQeV6OJsifZgxHPkahc2 ▬ HELPFUL RESOURCES ▬ Training Status Feature: https://youtu.be/BAqJJ9vx2CI Training Effect Feature: https://youtu.be/_8_kttKl6fI Training Load Feature: https://youtu.be/SoKB7b70VGU More Info on New Features: http://bit.ly/2oyyf5j ▬ RIZKNOWS DEALS APP ▬ iOS - http://apple.co/2qaHgzI Android - http://bit.ly/2qIDD6I ▬ CONNECT ▬ Subscribe: http://goo.gl/aTyGpN Fitness, Tech & Outdoor DEALS: https://rizknows.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/rizknows Instagram: http://instagram.com/rizknows Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rizknows Snapchat: http://snapchat.com/add/rizardofoz Periscope: rizknows ▬ CREDITS ▬ Intro Song: “Get Up” (by Ryan Little) Link: http://goo.gl/rzoBL7 Outro Song: "First Aid" by Letter Box Link: https://goo.gl/4j7Rr6 #rizknows #ad

Welcome to OutTheSaddle! Link to Product: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Edge-810-Bike-Computer/dp/B00B06J194 Here is the link to downloading Maps on an SD Card for the edge 810: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ Pros: Good Battery Life, Can link to HR Monitor and Power Metres through bluetooth, many data fields can be displayed simultaneously. Cons: Very expensive (at least £400), navigation with Installed Maps is quite primitive. Would recommend the GARMIN Touring/Edge 1000 if you want to have a good experience with Navigation. My uncle was going to throw this GPS away. In 2006, this GPS retailed for 399.99. Now you can probably get it for less than $40 on ebay. Heck, you might be able to get it for cheaper on craigslist. Regardless, the GPS was pretty good back in it's day. The biggest issue were the maps were outdated. That was the main reason why my uncle was throwing it away. Obviously, he didn't feel that it was worthwhile to pay $49.99 for an update dvd (or maybe it's 39.99 for online update). Luckily, I learned of a cheaper/easier way of updating the maps. I found out that if you purchase Nuvi Maps DVD for previous years, when you try to update your GPS with these older update dvd's, it's actually possible to download the current maps instead and update with the most current maps. I did this with the 2011 garmin nuvi dvd for the low clearance price of 17.99 from Best Buy. This GPS is pretty good, but bulky. What I really wanted was the Bluetooth speaker on this unit. Yes.. they had bluetooth in 2006. This thing will pair with pretty much any phone out their... well it easily paired with a mytouch 4g, pantech burst, iphone 3g, and iphone 4. Safety first. Secondly, this GPS can grab satellite info pretty quick.. like within 35 sec. Boot up time is about half a minute. Third, directions can be calculated pretty quickly too (in less than 15 seconds). They may not be the best directions, but they often match up with google maps. Another nice thing about this GPS is that it's so old,... I don't think anyone would want to steal it. Battery on this GPS only lasts about 1 hour now... it used to last an amazing 8 hours when it was new. These GPS's take the standard nuMaps update. Just google "Garmin - nuMaps Onetime City Navigator North America NT 2012 DVD" If you can find older unopened versions of this... and have a fast internet connection, then you can update your maps for much cheaper than $40-50
