5 Biggest Tsunami Caught On Camera

5 Mega Tsunami Caught On Camera — Enjoy the video. Rate, Comment, Share... Thanx For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea. Out in the depths of the ocean, tsunami waves do not dramatically increase in height. But as the waves travel inland, they build up to higher and higher heights as the depth of the ocean decreases. The speed of tsunami waves depends on ocean depth rather than the distance from the source of the wave. Tsunami waves may travel as fast as jet planes over deep waters, only slowing down when reaching shallow waters. While tsunamis are often referred to as tidal waves, this name is discouraged by oceanographers because tides have little to do with these giant waves. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was triggered by a 9.3 magnitude earthquake with the initial surge wave of the tsunami measuring 33 metres. It was the largest earthquake-generated tsunami in history. Certain places in the world are subject to earthquakes and tsunamis more than others as there are only seven tectonic plates covering the earth and the borders of these plates lie in certain areas. 12 Sea Creatures You Never Knew Existed

11:50
Sea creatures you never knew existed. These animals lived in the deepest parts of the ocean & you should be glad that these fish are extinct. Support our Patreon today: https://www.patreon.com/theywillkillyou Subscribe for new videos: http://goo.gl/SaufF4 Follow us on Instagram: @theywillkillyou Voiceover by Carl Mason: [email protected] 12 The Dumbo octopus The Dumbo octopus is a species of octopi that resembles the title character of the Disney film. It has prominent ear-like fins making it look like a baby elephant’s head. The Dumbo octopus lives at depths of over 13,000 feet below sea level. They grow to almost 6ft in length and weigh up to 13 pounds. 11 Ocean Sunfish The ocean sunfish is the heaviest bony fish in the world, weighing between 545 and 2,205 pounds. Living on a diet of sea jellies and small fish, which it has to consume in very large quantities because of their poor nutritional value. 10 Humpback Anglerfish The humpback anglerfish, also known as the humpback black devil, lives at depths ranging from 800 to 13,000 feet below the ocean’s surface. They have black soft bodies and large heads, widened mouths and long pointed teeth. Females are capable of eating prey even larger than themselves. 9 Amphipoda Amphipoda is an order of crustaceans that range in size from 0.03 inches to 13.4 inches. Their bodies are laterally compressed and have no carapace. The most interesting thing about amphipods is their feeding behavior. There are more than 9.900 species, and some are flesh-eating scavengers. Amphipods have two front pairs of legs with large claws. 8 Sarcastic Fringehead The sarcastic fringehead is a small fish with a large Predator-like mouth and aggressive territorial behavior. It can only grow up to 12 inches long and lives in the Pacific, off the coast of North America, from San Francisco, California to central Baja California. 7 Pelican eel The Pelican eel, also known as the gulper eel, has a very large mouth which it can open wide enough to swallow bigger fish. Gulper eels live at extreme depths from 1,600 to almost 10,000 ft. 6 Pacific Viperfish The Pacific viperfish lives in the abyssal depths of the deep sea and is easily recognized by its large open mouth. It’s a predatory fish that can reach lengths of 1 foot and it has an iridescent dark silver body. Pacific viperfish cannot close their mouths due to their very large fang-like teeth which they use to trap their prey with. They also have a light or gone located at the end of their dorsal fin rays. 5 Abyssal ghostsharks Pointy-nosed blue chimaeras or more commonly known as abyssal ghostsharks are sea creatures that live in temperate ocean floors down to 6,500 feet deep. They are believed to be some of the oldest fish in existence, as they branched off from sharks nearly 400 million years ago. 4 Stargazer Fish Stargazers are a family of fish that camouflage themselves in the sand on the ocean floor and attack when a fish swims by. Their eyes are mounted on the top of their heads and they have upward facing mouths. Stargazers have two large venomous spines located above their pectoral fins and some species can also cause electric shock. Their way of attacking other fish combined with their ability to cause electric shock and the fact that they also have venomous spines, have caused some to refer to stargazers as “the meanest things in creation”. 3 Immortal Jellyfish The immortal jellyfish is a species of biologically undying jellyfish. It’s found in the Mediterranean Sea and the waters of Japan and has no maximum lifespan. It begins life as a larva and settles down to the sea floor, where it gives rise to a colony of polyps. Each polyp and jellyfish arising from a single larva is a genetically identical clone. The polyps morph into an extensively branched form. Jellyfish then bud off the polyps and continue their life in a free-swimming form. 2 Water Bears Water bears are micro-animals that resemble bears and are believed to be the toughest and most resilient animals on the planet. They can survive incredibly harsh conditions such as exposure to extreme temperatures or pressures, radiation, air deprivation, dehydration and even starvation. They can go without food or water for more than 30 years. Their barrel-shaped bodies usually only grow up to 0.02 inches long and have four pairs of legs, each with four to eight claws. 1 Sea Spiders The sea spider is not really an arachnid, but a marine arthropod. It got the name from its eerie resemblance to a spider. It has eight long legs and a small body. Most species of sea spiders are so small that each of their muscles consists of only one cell. They’re most common in shallow waters where they’re usually found walking along the bottom.

2010 - A Salty Beginning for a Sturgeon at SEA LIFE Aquarium

01:27
For many, the New Year signifies a fresh start, but for one white sturgeon at SEA LIFE Aquarium, 2010 marks a salty new beginning the sturgeon moved from a fresh water home with other sturgeon to a salt water display with rays and leopard sharks. The sturgeon had grown too big for Gold Rush River, the largest fresh water display in the Aquarium. As one of few fish able to live in salt or fresh water, Aquarists decided to move him to the San Francisco Harbor display where he can be seen daily at the family Aquarium in Carlsbad.

Car Design Drawings | Speed Forms: Sea Life

08:58
This video is about how to draw speed forms to improve your car design drawings. For a free preview of our new 5 part course "Introduction to Automotive Design" click - https://www.udemy.com/introduction-to-automotive-design/learn/v4/overview  The video is presented by the Online Academy of Automotive Design. The Academy provides professional, live, one on one tutoring in how to draw cars for aspiring car designers. If your goal is to improve the quality of your car design drawings, check out https://www.howtodrawcars.net and sign up for a session. Be sure to check out all the videos in the How to Draw Cars series. Many students are motived to draw speed forms but feel blocked when it comes to knowing exactly what to draw. Using different inspirational forms outside the realm of cars and car design can provide the needed catalyst to jump start your sketching and creativity. For this video, we cover 3 forms of sea life and how they can be inspiration for drawing speed forms whose techniques are the foundation of any car design drawing. Practicing your speed forms provide 2 important lessons to the aspiring car designer: They improve your line quality so you can get your lines to flows and look fast. Secondly, using sea life for inspiration encourages the aspiring car designer to develop new form vocabularies opening the way for truly original car design shapes when you go back to drawing cars. The video uses a great white shark, a whale shark and a ray to show how these timeless forms can be the basis of speed form development. If you find a great form of sea life that you use for the basis of your speed forms or your car design drawings, be sure to let us know in the comments section. If you have an idea for a How to Draw Cars video, please email or let a note in the comments section. We want to get you drawing cars like a pro so the more you tell us the kind of car design drawing videos you are looking for, then better our videos will be. Be sure to subscribe to the channel. 10 Sea Creatures You Didn't Know Existed

03:02
10 Scary Sea Life Creatures That Will Give You Fear Of The Ocean. Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH7IZhznY_65jJkiHPV48NA 1. Giant Jellyfish The largest Jellyfish in the world is the Lion’s Mane which can grow to around 2.3 meters (7 ft 6 in) and has tentacles that stretch 37 meters. 2. Sea Lampreys The Sea Lamprey is a monster creature, it’s mouth acts as a sucker attaching itself to it’s prey. It’s many teeth then start to rip away at the flesh as it begins to eat it’s victim alive. To make things even worse the Lamprey releases a saliva which prevents the victims blood from clotting leaving them to die from excessive bleeding. 3. Killer Sharks Over the past few years more shark attacks have been reported, especially around the United States. Even though most attacks aren’t fatal many swimmers have received severe bites and even lost limbs. 4. Giant Manta Rays Some Manta Rays have been recorded to grow to a width of seven meters. They are normally placid creatures but on rare occasions have shown aggression to divers. 5. Giant Octopuses The biggest octopus in the world is called Enteroctopus and it can grow up to 3,3 meters (11 ft). These creatures are very intelligent and don’t attack humans but if they did you wouldn’t stand a chance. 6. Creature From The Depths Of The Ocean While this may look like an attack from some deep sea monster it is actually large sea grass flapping about in the waves. The 7. Giant Whales The largest whale is the Blue whale which can grow up to 30 meters in length and weigh more than 180 tonnes. Thankfully they have no teeth and only a small throat so it would be impossible for them to eat a human but there has been numerous reports from sailors of sperm whales swallowing men whole. 8. Giant Sea Bugs We have know idea what this creature is but there are thousands of them scouring the ocean floor. 9. Whale Sharks These creatures are the largest living fish on our planet with some being estimated to be 14 meters long (46 ft). they are not aggressive to humans and eat mainly fish but when it’s feeding time you certainly don’t want to be in the path of one of these giant sea creatures. 10. Barracudas The barracuda is a fearsome looking fish, it can grow up to 2.1 meters (6.9 ft) and has teeth big enough to easily rip chunks of flesh of your body. While attacks on humans are rare they do happen. EXTINCT Sea Creatures Rumored To Still Be Alive

12:27
From Mermaids to The Kraken, from Sirens to The Loch Ness Monster, here are some of the mythical creatures that are rumored to be alive. SUBSCRIBE for the latest videos: https://goo.gl/7xzjzR 12 Jormungandr The Jormungandr, or the Midgard Serpent, is the middle child of giantess Angrboda and Loki. Odin, god of gods, took Loki’s three children, the wolf Fenrir, Hel and Jormungand and threw the serpent in the great ocean that surrounds Midgard. It grew so large that it managed to surround the earth and grab it’s own tail. Thor, the thunder-god, is the arch-enemy of Jormungand and it is said that when the serpent releases it’s tail, Ragnarok, or the end of the world, will begin. 10 Sirens Not exactly a water creature, but it was a deadly threat to those travelling at sea. Sirens were dangerous monsters that lured sailor and ships with their enchanting voices, causing them to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their Island. The greeks and romans were terrified of them. Part woman, part bird, they played a variety of musical instruments, especially the harp. It is said that Ulysses was so curious as to what exactly made the siren’s song so enchanting, so he ordered his sailor to plug their ears with beeswax, tie him to the ship’s mast and leave him there, no matter how much he begged. Upon hearing their beautiful song, Ulysses went mad and screamed to be released. His men tied him even tighter until they passed out of earshot and their song could no longer be heard. It is said that the sirens were fated to die if any anybody listened to their song and escaped, and after Ulysses left, they flung themselves into the ocean and perished. 8 Yacuruna The indigenous people of the Amazon tell tales of the Yacuruna, water people, similar to human beings, that live in beautiful underwater cities, often at the mouths of rivers. They are described as hairy beings, with their heads turned backwards and having deformed feet. During the day, they sleep on the bottom of the rivers and lakes, and at night they roam the amazon riding a crocodile as a canoe and using a boa snake as a necklace. The Yacuruna can communicate and have control over the animals of the rainforest and it is said that they can transform into the Amazon River Dolphin, which is attracted by the blood in menstruating women. Once the woman is found, it transforms into a handsome man and seduces the woman, using aphordisiacs to kidnapp her and bring her to his underwater kingdom. With time, she gradually starts resembling her captor. Once the transformation of a human into a Yacuruna is complete, it is irreversible and they can never go back home. 7 Loch Ness Monster The Loch Ness Monster, or Nessie, is a creature inhabiting the Loch Ness lake in the Scottish Highlands. It is probably one of the most famous lake monster, and it is reported as being very large in size, with a long neck and humps protruding out of the water. The first sighting was in the 6th century AD, when Irish saint Columba met with a group of people burying a man near River Ness. One of the men was swimming and a water beast grabbed him and dragged him underwater. When the beast returned for one of Saint Columba’s men, he drove the creature away by making the sign of the cross and commanding the creature to leave. As the years passed, many more people reported seeing a strange creature in the lake, and The Loch Ness monster first gained worldwide attention with the now famous “surgeon’s photograph”, that shows a serpent-like creature sticking it’s head out of the water. Some say the Loch Ness monster is either a myth or just a hoax. Others say that Nessie is in fact an ancient Plesiosaurus. 5 Nymph Nymphs are divine spirits, often found in forests and mountains, near the placed they are bound to, like rivers or lakes. They look like very beautiful women, but are in fact deities 3 Kraken Near the coast of Norway and Greenland lives a giant monster that has been the stuff of nightmares for anybody who dared venture out to sea. For centuries, the Kraken has been one of the most terrifying creatures that inhabit the ocean. It is a huge, octopus like creature. It attacks anyone who disturbs its waters, from fishing boats to large ships. There is no way to escape it’s tentacles, which they use to embrace a whole ship, crushing it, and pulling it deep underwater. 1 Mermaid/Merman Of course you’ve heard of Mermaids, or their male counterparts, the Mermen. They have the upper body of a human, and the tail of a fish. They have been sighted since the times of the Assyrians, even Christopher Columbus saw them during his exploration of the Caribbean! Mermaids are associated with floods, drownings and shipwrecks, although they are not necessarily evil, sometimes they do good, blessing the fortunate, teaching them hidden knowledge, or falling in love with humans. Some say they are just manatees or stingrays. Until we actually find one, there’s plenty of stories about mermaid to read.

Scarborough North Bay Railway & Sea Life Vlog May 2018

38:12
Join us as we head to Scarborough for a visit to the North Bay Railway and the Sea Life Centre. We take a ride on this 20 inch gauge railway on board one of the oldest seaside miniature railways in the country. We start our vlog in picturesque Peasholm Park, where one of the newer locomotives takes us through parkland, past the Scarborough Open Air Theatre, and out on to the Scarborough coastline. We then exit the train at Scalby Mills Station and visit the Sea Life Centre along with checking out the remains from an old cable car attraction that used to be in the same area. We then head into Scarborough and check out the construction taking place a new indoor theme park set to open on the sea front in the coming years. Along with this we discover a different kind of ride in the harbour and much more! 10 Creepy Sea Creatures You Didn't Know Existed

04:33
Did you know any of these amazing and scary deep sea creatures? It's hard to believe these bizarre animals exist. Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg 'Hatchet Fish' footage by Filmic Art : www.filmicart.com For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] Description: There is a vast world below the ocean that we have yet to discover in its entirety. While we seem to know nearly everything about the land, the sea still leaves much to be desired. As you go down into the depths of the ocean, you’ll notice a lot will change. For one, you’ll begin to be immersed in darkness. Second, the pressure will change. So, the creatures that have been discovered deep in the oceanic depths are quite different biologically, and they can be quite terrifying to look at. But once we begin to understand them, we can start to learn more about our existence, and even come closer to curing diseases and solving some of the world’s most complex mysteries. However, the sea creatures that have been discovered recently have shown to be just downright creepy and terrifying. You probably recall the Angler Fish, especially if you’re seen the Disney movie, “Finding Nemo”. If you didn’t realize that this fish is the real deal, get ready for new additions to your nightmares. It wasn’t a work of fiction or some messed up fantasy of some Disney Imagineer. The fish that we see in this video is actually female, and the male is a small weakling, wandering the sea to find a female with her pheromones. The male then attaches itself to the female and becomes a parasite. Every part of the male merges with the female except for the testicles, which the female uses to impregnate herself. Jokes aside, this is quite a fascinating process despite how creepy it is. Similar to the angler fish is the Viper Fish, which has a natural extra attachment that illuminates in the darkness of the sea with the purpose of attracting prey. The blob fish is a creature that you wonder what God was smoking or shooting up when he decided to create the blob fish. This fish has no bones, and literally just hangs out on the ocean floor and hopes that food comes to its mouth. Whether you want to worship the blob fish for its epic level of laziness or wonder how in the world the species is still in existence with such an apathetic demeanor, it’s still creepy to look at. Then we have the goblin shark, which is pretty much like the underwater version of the alien from the movie “Alien” due to its protruding mouth. The goblin shark has a large snout and needle-like teeth that are sharp and deadly. For a completely random sea creature, we have the Christmas Tree Worms, which really look like tiny walking fir trees that come in different colors. The branches or hair-like appendages help them breathe as well as consume phytoplankton. Then we have the sea pig, which looks nothing like the pigs we have on land. But instead the sea pig is a multi-tubed foot sea creature that is closely related to the sea cucumber. It eats by pulling water and absorbing organic food. Quite innovative, even though it looks creepy. For more creepy sea creatures, check out the rest of the video for more. Starting a Base!! - Subnautica Gameplay - Episode 3

Let's play Subnautica! In this episode, we hunt for sulfur pods, scan wreckage for blueprints, and start building our first base! ► Leave a LIKE if you enjoy! It really helps! ► Subscribe for more! http://goo.gl/unW7V8 ► Subnautica playlist: https://goo.gl/W4YDGZ ► Twitter: http://twitter.com/paulsoaresjr Get Subnautica on Steam: https://goo.gl/4TX7h8 ABOUT THIS GAME You have crash-landed on alien ocean world, and the only way to go is down. Subnautica's oceans range from sun drenched shallow coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches, lava fields, and bio-luminescent underwater rivers. Manage your oxygen supply as you explore kelp forests, plateaus, reefs, and winding cave systems. The water teems with life: Some of it helpful, much of it harmful. After crash landing in your Life Pod, the clock is ticking to find water, food, and to develop the equipment you need to explore. Collect resources from the ocean around you. Craft knives, lights, diving gear, and personal water craft. Venture deeper and further form to find rarer resources, allowing you to craft more advanced items. Build bases on the sea floor. Choose layouts and components, and manage hull-integrity as depth and pressure increase. Use your base to store resources, park vehicles, and replenish oxygen supplies as you explore the vast ocean. What happened to this planet? Signs abound that something is not right. What caused you to crash? What is infecting the sea life? Who built the mysterious structures scattered around the ocean? Can you find a way to make it off the planet alive? Disrupt the Food Chain The ocean teems with life: Use the ecosystem to help you. Lure and distract a threatening creature with a fresh fish, or simply swim as fast as you can to avoid gnashing jaws of roaming predators. Build a Pressure Re-Active Waterproof Nanosuit, or PRAWN Suit, and explore extreme depth and heat. Modify the suit with mining drills, torpedo launchers, propulsion cannons, grappling hooks and more. As the sun goes down, the predators come out. The ocean is unforgiving of those caught unprepared in the darkness. Areas that are safe to explore during the day become treacherous at night, but also reveal a beauty that those who hide from the darkness will never see. Cave systems wind below the sea bed, from dark claustrophobic passages to caverns lit by bio-luminescent life and burning-hot lava flows. Explore the world below the ocean floor, but watch your oxygen levels, and take care to avoid the threats lurking in the darkness. Deep Sea Creatures - Creatures from Hell

06:37
This is the start of a few series I will make in the next years called Creatures from Hell presenting weird creatures around the world. Hope you enjoy this and subscribe! DESCRIPTION AND MORE INFO (in order): Gulper Eel: The Gulper Eel has an elongate body with a luminous organ at the end of the tail. The eyes are tiny and close to the snout. The Gulper Eel grows to 80cm in length. Its major food items are crustaceans, but it also feeds on fishes, cephalopods and other invertebrates. Found in all of the world's tropical and temperate oceans at depths ranging from 500 to 6,000 feet depth on the ocean. "Black" Sea devil: Sea devils are characterised by a gelatinous, mostly scaleless body; a large head, and generous complement of menacingly large, sharp, glassy fang-like teeth lining the jaws of a oblique mouth. These teeth are depressible and present only in females. Like other anglerfish, black seadevils possess the "fishing rod". Adults have been trawled from as deep as 3,000 metres (9,900 feet), larvae appear to remain in the upper 100 metres (330 feet) of the water column and gradually descend with maturity. Found in north-western Europe, eastern North America, Africa and the Far East oceans.

Bahamas Sharks - Sealife DC2000

I took this video at a dive site called Austin Smith around the Exuma islands in the Bahamas. There were plenty of Caribbean Reef Sharks around since the dive site is use to by other dive operators as a feeding ground. The Bahamas Aggressor does not allow feeding of marine life while aboard their yachts. I shot this using a Sealife DC2000 (1080P, 60fps, -0.5EV). Edited with FCPX. How do you recognize something that you can touch and something you have to run away from as fast as possible? Here is a list of the most dangerous sea creatures you can meet and how to recognize them! There are so many different species living in the ocean! Some of them are beautiful, some are deadly, and some are both. TIMESTAMPS Fire Coral 0:40 Flower Urchin 1:20 Cone Snail 1:50 Portuguese Man-of-War 2:32 Snea snakes 3:54 Lionfish 4:51 Chironex 5:39 Surgeonfish 6:15 Indonesian needlefish 6:59 Triggerfish 7:34 SUMMARY - Fire Coral. These small organisms can sting, and the effect can be not very serious and it can be quite bad. A stung person may have severe pains, feel nauseated and even vomit, which is not the best thing to do when you are underwater. - Flower Urchin is both very beautiful and very deadly. It contains toxins that can cause anaphylactic shock, convulsions and finally death. You can get poisoned if you step on it when you are in the sea or the ocean. - Scientists say that just one drop of the cone snail’s poison is enough to kill 20 people! Just one drop! - The most mind-blowing fact about Man-of-War is that technically we should call it Men-of-War, and refer to it not as «it», but «they», and here is why: it’s an animal that is made up of a colony of organisms cooperating together. Man-of-war has tentacles that can be 30 feet long, which it uses to paralyze and kill fish and other small creatures. - Sea snakes are much more venomous than their land-living friends. As it turns out, they have to be like that because they hunt fish, so what they need to do is immobilize their prey very quickly not to let it escape. - Many people call the lionfish the most beautiful sea creature in the world. You can find them in the Caribbean and Eastern Atlantic. Lionfishes are not deadly — they do have a venom, but it’s not lethal. However, the pain you will experience if you get stung is so severe that people say you might wish you were dead. - Chironex doesn’t have any teeth, but it’s dangerous as hell. If a person gets stung, they will have excruciating pain, red inflammation in the stung area and heart dysfunction. - Surgeonfish are easily spooked, so you should be extra careful if you see one of them. Don’t make any unexpected fast moves. The good news is, surgeonfish are not aggressive unless, of course, you provoke them. - Indonesian needlefish live in tropical and subtropical waters of the oceans. They, as the name suggests, have a very sharp, needle-like beak, and they are especially dangerous when they hurl themselves out of the water. - Triggerfish is mostly friendly, but only until you are a threat to its nest. The most dangerous are females — if you approach its nest even accidentally, it will bite you. Thankfully, the bites aren’t poisonous, but triggerfish have extremely sharp teeth, so the injuries it can cause need serious medical attention. 9 of the Longest Living Sea Creatures

10:46
9 of the Longest Living Sea Creatures! These are the oldest animals who survived in the ocean, rare species discovered in the world. Subscribe for the latest videos: https://goo.gl/7xzjzR 9: Rougheye Rockfish The rougheye rockfish got its name because of the ten spines found on the lower rim of its eye. It is also known as the blackthroat rockfish or the blacktip rockfish, & it is difficult to distinguish from its close cousin, the (short raker) Shortraker rockfish. It can reach a maximum size of 37 inches long & weighs up to 14 pounds. The species can be found at depths between 550 & 2,100 feet. The rougheye rockfish is especially known for having an extremely long lifespan, as it can live as long as 205 years. 8: Bowhead whale The Bowhead whale is known for having the largest mouth of any animal. The species can weigh from 75 to over 100 tons & can grow up to 60 feet long. The bowhead whale has been known to have an impressive life span of over 200 years. The oldest specimen found was caught in May 2007 off the Alaskan coast with the head of an explosive harpoon embedded under its neck blubber. It was estimated to be 211 years old at the time.A newborn calf weighs about 2,200 pounds & measures 12 to 14 feet. 7: The Greenland Shark The Greenland shark is also known as the gurry shark or the grey shark & it has the longest lifespan of all vertebrate species. It has been known to reach over 200 years in its lifetime, but new studies found it can get anywhere between 272 & 512 years old. The Greenland shark is one of the largest species of shark & can grow to 24 feet long & 3,000 pounds. It lives in the deep waters of the North Atlantic Ocean & the Arctic Ocean. 6: Quahog clam One of the oldest individuals, named Ming the clam after the Ming dynasty during which it was born, died in 2006 at 507 years old, after it was collected alive by an expedition & dredged off the coast of Iceland. It is unknown how long it could have lived, had it not been taken out of the ocean. Another long-lived specimen was previously collected in 1868 near Iceland, & was 374 years old. Arctica islandica, as its name suggests, resembles a quahog, & may grow to sizes exceeding 50 mm shell height & up to 5 inches in length. 5: Antarctic sponge An Antarctic sponge was found to have a very long lifespan, due to the fact that it grows extremely slowly in low temperature. As its name suggests, this sponge is found in the Antarctic Ocean, but some specimens were also found in the Ross Sea & the Scotia Sea. Scientists estimate that it can live for centuries, as one individual was found to be over 1,550 years old. Researchers came to this conclusion after using its metabolic rate & oxygen consumption as an approximate measurement. 4: Giant barrel sponge The Giant Barrel Sponge is the largest species of sponge found on Caribbean coral reefs & it can reach a diameter of 6 feet long. . Some of the specimens found in the Caribbean Sea by scientist are over 2,300 years old. The Giant Barrel Sponge is typically brownish-red to rose-purple or gray, has a hard texture & can grow on any hard surface. It feeds by continually pumping water into the sides of the sponge, through the sponge body. This process sucks microscopic bacteria into the channels, which then engulf them & extract their nutrients. 3: Black coral Black Coral is a recently discovered species that can live over 4,000 years. It lives at depths of 1,000 to 1,600 feet in protected waters of the Hawaiian Islands. The species was discovered in 2015 by a group of scientists at the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries & the Smithsonian Natural Museum of Natural History. As the coral resembles the structure of a tree, scientists found that this coral also has growth rings showing how long it lived. Black Coral is the longest-lived marine organism known to date, which explains the name “annosa”, which means long-lived. 2: Monorhaphis chuni Monorhaphis chuni is a deep sea sponge known for creating a single giant basal spicule that can reach lengths of 9 feet long. It is usually found in the Western Central Pacific, in the waters of Philippines & Indonesia. However, some specimens were also found in the East China Sea, or Tanzania, & Somalian waters. A study in the journal Aging Research Reviews revealed that a sponge species from the Monorhaphis chuni may live to be 11,000 years old. 1: Immortal jellyfish The Immortal Jellyfish is a biologically immortal species of jellyfish. After reaching maturity as a solitary individual, it can revert completely to a immature colonial stage. Its life begins as a larvae, & while at first it is a free-swimming organism, as it settles down & becomes mature, the Immortal Jellyfish gives a rise to a colony of polyps that are attached to the sea-floor. It was only named “The immortal jellyfish” because, theoretically, the process of the mature medusa reverting to the polyp stage can go on indefinitely.
