Surviving One of the Deadliest Routes to Europe: Refugees at Sea

31:40
Desperate to escape conflict and poverty, thousands of migrants and refugees attempt the perilous journey to Europe each year, with many crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa in rubber dinghies and wooden boats. In the wake of the decommissioning of Mare Nostrum, a search and rescue operation run by Italy, the humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), launched their own vessel, named the Bourbon Argos, to find those stranded at sea and save those in trouble on one of the deadliest routes to Europe. On board the vessel, refugees and migrants are provided with medical aid, food, and shelter, then brought safely to Italian shores. Having survived life in Libya, ruthless treatment by smugglers, and horrific conditions aboard flimsy boats, once aboard the Bourbon Argos they face yet more uncertainty as they approach Europe. VICE News teamed up with MSF to document these search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean and speak to rescued refugees and migrants, hearing about the suffering they have endured in their attempts to reach a new life. Travel by cruise ship to Panama Canal (HD)

09:07
Travel by cruise ship to Panama Canal , Visit Panama Canal, Panama Canal Tours, Panama Canal Vacation Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube The Panama Canal is a 77.1-kilometre (48 mi) ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres (85 ft) above sea level. The current locks are 33.5 metres (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks is currently under construction and is due to open in 2016. France began work on the canal in 1881, but had to stop because of engineering problems and high mortality due to disease. The United States took over the project in 1904, and took a decade to complete the canal, which was officially opened on August 15, 1914. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduced the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America via the Drake Passage or Strait of Magellan. The shorter, faster, and safer route to the U.S. West Coast and to nations in and around the Pacific Ocean allowed those places to become more integrated with the world economy. It takes between 20 and 30 hours to traverse the canal. During construction, ownership of the territory that is now the Panama Canal was first Colombian, then French, and then American. The US continued to control the canal and surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties provided for handover to Panama. After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999, and is now managed and operated by the Panama Canal Authority, a Panamanian government agency. Annual traffic has risen from about 1,000 ships in 1914, when the canal opened, to 14,702 vessels in 2008, the latter measuring a total of 309.6 million Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) tons. By 2008, more than 815,000 vessels had passed through the canal; the largest ships that can transit the canal today are called Panamax. The American Society of Civil Engineers has named the Panama Canal one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

The Secret Routes of Migratory Birds

52:50
Every year millions of migratory birds make their epic journey across Europe - south in the autumn, north in early spring. But recently there have been fewer in our skies, some species have even vanished entirely. For over twenty years Christian Moullec has watched and studied birds. He learned to pilot a microlight to fly alongside them. He wants to understand, and act to help these birds continue their seasonal pilgrimages. And so, he has dreamt up a slightly mad project: a school of migration. He will fly off with a small group of geese. Discover, with them, the pitfalls and dangers of our modern world, and find a new way of crossing our lands. Then, he will leave them to their freedom. With the hope that his pupils will retain their journey’s lessons, and one day pass these on to other wild geese.

15 SHORTEST Flights In The World!

11:20
Astoundingly short trips you can take by plane! From hopping between exotic islands to avoiding dangerous borders here are the shortest commercial flights you could find yourself on! 15. “Toronto to Niagara Falls”- From the sparkling Canadian city of Toronto to the natural wonder that is Niagara falls is 90 miles, which by air takes only 12 minutes. Sure you can drive along the coast of Lake Ontario to get there but the near 3 hours it usually takes to go only 90 miles can be taxing. The road from Toronto to Niagara is notorious for being gridlocked or perpetually under construction. Because of this, Greater Toronto Airways began offering daily flights in eight-seater planes in September of 2016. It is pricier than the hour and a half train ride but it’s much quicker and you don’t need to bring a passport. 14. “Kinshasa to Brazzaville”- If you plan on traveling between Kinshasa, Republic of Congo and Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of the Congo you are sure to face strict border restrictions, especially if you are traveling by car. These two towns are cultural brothers but have been at odds with each other since colonial times and are separated by the raging Congo River. Most of the locals take ferries or speedboats across but this can be extremely dangerous for tourists, so the best way to travel is by air. The flight takes about 17 minutes to go the 80 miles between the airports and though it’s far more expensive you can avoid being hassled by the border patrols or thieves. What makes the relationship between the two even crazier is that they are both capitals of their respective countries, if you combine their populations it reaches over 15 million. 13. “Tangier to Gibraltar”-The Moroccan port city of Tangier and the densely populated British Territory of Gibraltar sit on each side of the mouth of the Mediterranean sea. To travel the 43 mile distance you would take a 78 seat twin-engine turboprop ATR-72 aircraft. This jaunt has a flight time of about 25 minutes and total trip time of 50 minutes. Tangier has been an African stronghold for empires throughout history who wanted to control the Mediterranean. For the same reasons, Gibraltar has been contested over on the European side. In Gibraltar, you can visit the famous Rock of Gibraltar which is a giant chunk of limestone located at the tip of the tiny peninsula. The rock has been a landmark to sailors for thousands of years warning them that they are about to hit the open ocean. The Rock itself is full of tiny tunnels and remnants of the various fortresses that were built there it is also home to a protected colony of macaques who are the only group of non-human primates in Europe that don’t live in captivity.

Turtle GPS - Science Nation

02:32
Sea turtles, salmon, and sharks sometimes travel the width of the ocean to return to their, "breeding ground," to reproduce. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Biologist Ken Lohmann at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill studies the role magnetic fields play in these long distance migrations. In his lab he's done behavioral studies, manipulating environmental cues to see how young turtles respond to even small changes in magnetic fields. His findings are already being put to use - wildlife officials from the state of South Carolina switched to using plastic cages to protect turtle eggs from predators after Lohmann's research suggested that wire cages can alter the magnetic cues sensed by the turtles. Lohmann will be releasing some turtles in the next few weeks off the NC coast, and beginning new studies of juveniles in his lab. Climate Change Will Open New Arctic Shipping Route By 2050

01:25
Climate changes will open new Arctic shipping lanes. A study from researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles says that the effects of global warming may open up two new shipping routes including across the North Pole as well as through the Northwest Passage, making travel in these areas of the Arctic Ocean a possibility for the first time. The Northwest Passage is a route that goes directly from Newfoundland to the Bering Strait along Canadian coastline. These routes have always been blocked by ice cover, but research predicts the level of summer sea ice in the Arctic Ocean could decrease sufficiently to make seasonal travel possible by midcentury, saving shipping companies time and money. A route across the North Pole would be 20 percent shorter than the Northern Sea Route along the Russian coastline which has seen several dozen ships pass through, and would not incur the hefty fees Russia charges as it would be in international waters. The study from UCLA predicts that the new routes will be accessible to use approximately every other year by the mid 21st century, but only during the late summer season when there is less ice. The study says: Although sea ice currently represents the single greatest obstacle to trans-Arctic shipping, numerous additional factors, including dearth of services and infrastructure, high insurance, escort fees, unknown competitive response of the Suez and Panama Canals, poor charts and other socioeconomic considerations, remain significant impediments to maritime activity in the region."

Countries and Trade Routes near Mediterranean Sea

05:46
Find out about the countries and various trade routes near Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean Sea is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean surrounded by the Mediterranean Basin and almost completely enclosed by land: on the north by Southern Europe and Anatolia, on the south by North Africa, and on the east by the Levant. The sea is sometimes considered a part of the Atlantic Ocean, although it is usually identified as a separate body of water.

JRC reveals global traffic routes using LRIT ship tracking data

01:36
The video shows the main traffic routes followed at global scale by ships flying the flag of States contributing to the EU Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) Cooperative Data Centre (CDC): all EU Member States, Iceland, Norway, and Overseas Territories of EU Member States*. The LRIT vessel positions are refreshed every 6 hours and reconstructed every hour using the European Commission Joint Research Centre's “Blue Hub” technology. The video covers a period of one month, giving a first insight into the potential of the data for performing statistical and other analysis of maritime transport routes of vessels flying EU LRIT CDC flags. The LRIT vessel positions can be polled over delimited areas by operational authorities in specific circumstances such as for Search and Rescue. Travel Beautiful Mauritius by Way of the Tea and Rum Routes

03:16
Mauritius, officially the Republic of Mauritius (French: République de Maurice), is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the southeast coast of the African continent. Dotted around the island are sugar plantations that result in rum production, and the island country is also verdant with tea plantations. This clip takes you to a few places that are fun to tour and get a better understanding of what Mauritius is beyond sun, sea and sand. Mauritius has recently joined a group of islands known as The Vanilla Islands of the Indian Ocean. Travelled and filmed by Bea Broda, and edited and narrated by Dave Cutler.

LEBANON: TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED ON ALL ROUTES FROM LIBYA

02:31
Arabic/Eng Lebanon closed its sea routes with Libya on Saturday and imposed other travel restrictions in an attempt to stop hundreds of Palestinians deported by Colonel Gadhafi entering the country. In a strong response to Colonel Gadhafi's decision to expel all Palestinian workers from Libya, Lebanon closed all sea routes with Libya and imposed strict travel restrictions on Saturday. The decision came after 350 Palestinians arrived from Libya with Lebanese travel documents. There are 30,000 Palestinians in Libya, many of them with valid Lebanese travel documents. The Khiat family were one of the few families that entered Lebanon before the ban. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "Lately there was a celebration on the first of September after the brother Colonel Gadhafi finished his speech he mentioned that Palestinians will leave Libya." SUPER CAPTION: Fatima Khiat The PLO responded sharply in reaction to the Lebanese announcement. SOUNDBITE: "I want to express my condemnation of the act that has been taken against Palestinian people and specially the deportation has no reason whatsoever. The people who have been deported did not commit any act to deserve such deportation. Secondly, I'd like to tell that these Palestinians hold Lebanese documents that all was natural when Gadhafi decide to send them into Lebanon they were supposed to be received with decency and respect because they hold Lebanese legal documents." SUPER CAPTION: Shafik Al Hout, PLO official in Lebanon The Lebanese Interior Minister called the decision a "preventative measure". SOUNDBITE:(Arabic) "Libyans decided to expel 15-thousand Palestinians to Lebanon as if we are here an open place to everybody. No, Lebanon will not be an open square to any body and I assure you that no harbour and no airport will allow that, any one who wants to throw the Palestinians out of his land will (not) send them into Lebanon." SUPER CAPTION: Michael El Mur, Lebanese Interior Minister Many Lebanese are afraid that a refugee influx will upset the country's delicate political balance, re igniting sectarian friction. Poland/Latvia - Hanseatic routes along the Baltic Sea | European Journal Journeys in Europe

06:11
The Hanseatic League dominated long-distance trade from the 13th to the 16th century. The Hanseatic cities of central and eastern Europe are hoping to revive old traditions.Gdansk, Tallinn, Vilnius and Riga were every part as much of the Hanseatic League as Hamburg and Bremen. Even today, the cities' beautiful medieval buildings are a reminder of that age. Now that the states along the eastern Baltic have joined the European Union, the old Hanseatic cities are rekindling their old bonds. In the Middle Ages, the Hanseatic League's influence extended across much of Europe, and trade flourished. The Hanseatic cities even had their own legal system, which was an important factor in their economic and political success. Some experts say the Hanseatic League could serve as a useful model for European integration today.

Before Weddell seal pups can be located and added to the extensive database of generations of Weddell seals born in the Erebus Bay study area, safe travel routes over the frozen ocean must be assessed and flagged by the B-009 Weddell population study field team. In this brief video, the field team begins their research season in Antarctica by flagging safe routes to travel over the sea ice to get to the numerous Weddell seal pupping colonies scattered throughout the study area. This video was shot on a sunny day in 2011. More info about the Weddell seal population study at http://WeddellSealScience.com

Twitter : https://twitter.com/deepakdilme Many of my friends were asking for a Spiti valley Itinerary and here i am posting a best route plan for Spiti valley. The Spiti Valley is a cold desert mountain valley located high in the Himalaya mountains in the north-eastern part of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The name "Spiti" means "The Middle Land", i.e. the land between Tibet and India. The town of Kaza, Kaze or Kaja is the subdivisional headquarters of the remote Spiti Valley in the Lahaul and Spiti district of the state of Himachal Pradesh in the Western Himalayas of India. Shimla is the capital of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, in the Himalayan foothills. Once the summer capital of British India, it remains the terminus of the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla Railway, completed in 1903. It’s also known for the handicraft shops that line The Mall, a pedestrian avenue, as well as the Lakkar Bazaar, a market specializing in wooden toys and crafts. Nako Lake is a high altitude lake in the Pooh sub-division of the Kinnaur district. It forms part of the boundary of Nako village and seems that the village is half buried in the lake's border. It is about 3,662 metres above sea level. Kalpa is a small town in the Sutlej river valley, above Recong Peo in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, Northern India, in the Indian Himalaya. Inhabited by Kinnauri people and famous for its apple orchards. Chandra Taal, or Chandra Tal is situated in the Spiti part of the Lahul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. The name of the lake originates from its crescent shape. It is situated at an altitude of about 4,300 metres in the Himalayas. Kye Gompa is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located on top of a hill at an altitude of 4,166 metres above sea level, close to the Spiti River, in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, Lahaul and Spiti district, India. Kibber also Kyibar is a village high in the Spiti Valley in the Himalayas at 4270 metres or 14,200 ft in Himachal Pradesh in northern India. It contains a monastery and the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary.
