Six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States defeated Japan in one of the most decisive naval battles of World War II. Thanks in part to major advances in code breaking, the United States was able to preempt and counter Japan’s planned ambush of its few remaining aircraft carriers, inflicting permanent damage on the Japanese Navy. An important turning point in the Pacific campaign, the victory allowed the United States and its allies to move into an offensive position.

The naval Battle of Texel or Battle of Kijkduin took place off the southern coast of island of Texel on 21 August 1673 (11 August O.S.) between the Dutch and the combined Englishand French fleets. It was the last major battle of the Third Anglo-Dutch War, which was itself part of the Franco-Dutch War (1672–1678), during which Louis XIV of France invaded the Republic and sought to establish control over the Spanish Netherlands. English involvement came about because of the Treaty of Dover, secretly concluded by Charles II of England, and which was highly unpopular with the English Parliament. The overall commanders of the English and Dutch military forces were Lord High Admiral James, Duke of York, afterwards King James II of England, and Admiral-General William III of Orange, James' son-in-law and also a future King of England. Neither of them took part in the fight. Prince Rupert of the Rhine commanded the Allied fleet of about 92 ships and 30 fireships, taking control of the centre himself, with Jean II d'Estrées commanding the van, and Sir Edward Spragge the rear division. The Dutch fleet of 75 ships and 30 fireships was commanded by Lieutenant-Admiral-General Michiel de Ruyter, with Lieutenant-Admirals Adriaen Banckert in charge of the van and Cornelis Tromp the rear. The Dutch were under an even greater disadvantage than the above numbers show, as Dutch warships were on the average smaller than both their English and French opponents. Michiel de Ruyter

The Battle of Tsushima (Russian: Цусимское сражение, Tsusimskoye srazheniye), also known as the Battle of Tsushima Strait and the Naval Battle of the Sea of Japan (Japanese: 日本海海戦, Nihonkai-Kaisen) in Japan, was a major naval battle fought between Russia and Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. It was fought on 27–28 May 1905 in the Tsushima Strait between Korea and southern Japan. In this battle the Japanese fleet hailed from Busan under Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō destroyed two-thirds of the Russian fleet hailed from Baltic Sea, under Admiral Zinovy Rozhestvensky, which had traveled over 18,000 nautical miles (33,000 km) to reach the Far East.

Naval Battle of the Yellow Sea/Battle of the Yalu River (1894) The Battle of the Yalu River (simplified Chinese: 黄海海战; traditional Chinese: 黃海海戰; pinyin: Huáng Hǎi Hǎizhàn; Japanese:Kōkai-kaisen (黄海海戦, "Naval Battle of the Yellow Sea")) was the largest naval engagement of the First Sino-Japanese War, and took place on 17 September 1894, the day after the Japanese victory at the land Battle of Pyongyang. It involved ships from the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Chinese Beiyang Fleet. The Chinese fleet was bigger and armed with bigger guns. The Japanese fleet was much faster. As a result, the Japanese would have an advantage in open water. On paper, the Beiyang Fleet had the superior ships, included two pre-dreadnought battleships, Dingyuan and Zhenyuan, for which the Japanese had no counterparts.Though well drilled, the Chinese had not engaged in sufficient gunnery practice beforehand. This lack of training was the direct result of a serious lack of ammunition. The main squadron of the Japanese fleet initially followed the same course as the flying squadron towards the Chinese left but completed the turn all the way round to circle behind the Chinese fleet. As the flying squadron again turned south, the Beiyang Fleet was caught between the two Japanese squadrons. Dingyuan and Zhenyuan resisted the heaviest bombardment as a result of their armour; however, the quick firing Japanese guns decimated crews on their decks. The Japanese fleet's more reliable, better-maintained ordnance and overwhelming superiority in rapid-firing guns gave it tactical advantage over the Beiyang Fleet, which fought with limited stocks, consisting of older foreign ammunition and shoddy domestic products. Japanese shells set four Chinese vessels ablaze, destroying three. A total of about 850 Chinese sailors were lost in the battle with 500 wounded. The Chinese severely damaged four Japanese warships and lightly damaged two others. Japanese losses were roughly 180 killed, and 200 wounded.

The sea battle at Sluys, present-day Netherlands, was the first major confrontation of the Hundred Years War. On June 24,1340 an outnumbered English fleet approached the anchored French "Army of the Sea" which included ships and soldiers from Genoa, Castille, and other allies. The next major confrontation of the "war" was in 1346 at the Battle of Crecy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VBDGLlSIcw You can also see the Lego Battle of Agincourt, 1415, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8LZ5o39KkQ King Edward III of England led the English fleet in person aboard his Cog "Thomas" and he was injured in the leg during the fighting. The French fleet was commanded by Hugues Quiret. Against Genoese advice the French decided to chain their ships together and remain anchored. The English ships were filled with archers and shot French men off the decks. Then the French ships were boarded and captured or destroyed. After Sluys the French coast was open to invasion by England. The French Chronicle of London, written nearly at the same time as the battle, reports at 14 Edward III (A.D. 1339, 40) that: "The wind had then been in the East for the whole fortnight before the King put to sea, but by the grace of Him who is Almighty, the wind shifted immediately to the West; so that, by the grace of God, the King and his fleet had both wind and weather to their mind. And so they sailed on until sunrise at break of day; when he saw his enemies so strongly equipped, that it was a most dreadful thing to behold; for the fleet of the ships of France was so strongly bound together with massive chains, castles, bretasches, and bars. But notwithstanding this, Sir Edward, our King, said to all those who were around him in the fleet of England, 'Fair lords and brethren of mine, be nothing dismayed, but be all of good cheer, and he who for me shall begin the fight and shall combat with a right good heart, shall have the benison of God Almighty; and every one shall retain that which he shall gain.' And so soon as our King had said this, all were of right eager heart to avenge him of his enemies. And then our mariners hauled their sails half-mast high, and hauled up their anchors in manner as though they intended to fly; and when the fleet of France beheld this, they loosened themselves from their heavy chains to pursue us. And forthwith our ships turned back upon them, and the melee began, to the sound of trumpets, nakers, viols, tabors, and many other kinds of minstrelsy. And then did our King, with three hundred ships, vigorously assail the French with their five hundred great ships and galleys, and eagerly did our people exert great diligence to give battle to the French. Our archers and our arbalesters began to fire as densely as hail falls in winter, and our engineers hurled so steadily, that the French had not power to look or to hold up their heads. And in the meantime, while this assault lasted, our English people with a great force boarded their galleys, and fought with the French hand to hand, and threw them out of their ships and galleys. And always, our King encouraged them to fight bravely with his enemies, he himself being in the cog called 'Thomas of Winchelsee.' And at the hour of tierce [about 9 am] there came to them a ship of London, which belonged to William Haunsard, and it did much good in the said battle. For the battle was so severe and so hardly contested, that the assault lasted from noon all day and all night, and the morrow until the hour of prime [about six in the evening]; and when the battle was discontinued, no French man remained alive, save only Spaudefisshe, who took to flight with four-and-twenty ships and galleys." More information about this battle and the lead-up to the Hundred Years War can be found at: http://www.britishbattles.com/100-years-war/sluys.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Sluys

Battle of Jutland | Largest Naval Battle World War 1 I Military The Battle of Jutland (German: Skagerrakschlacht) was a naval battle fought by the British Royal Navy's Grand Fleet under Admiral Sir John Jellicoe against the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet under Vice-Admiral Reinhard Scheer during the First World War. The battle was fought from 31 May to 1 June 1916 in the North Sea, near the coast of Denmark's Jutland Peninsula. It was the largest naval battle and the only full-scale clash of battleships in the war. It was only the third-ever fleet action between steel battleships, following the smaller but more decisive battles of the Yellow Sea (1904) and Tsushima (1905) during the Russo-Japanese War. This battle takes place in the Baltic Sea, year 1720. Strategy: My plan was to hit them from two broadsides, my frigates (5th and 6th Rate) on one side and my two-deckers (4th Rate) from the other. And doing this by sailing around them with my frigates, relying on speed and fast maneuvering. Hope you guys enjoy this naval battle. Dutch Republic fleet: - Admiral's Flagship (5th Rate) x2 - 4th Rate x 3 - 5th Rate x 2 - 6th Rate x 3 - Total 10 Swedish fleet: - Brig x 5 - Sloop x 5 - Light Galley x 4 - Total 14 Music: The Old Ways - Loreena McKennitt (The Visit)

Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free. http://bit.ly/2O6zUsK This programme details the opening phase of the Gallipoli conflict. It was an audacious scheme, which, had it succeeded would have enabled the allies to capture Constantinople. This would have guaranteed control of the Bosphorous, which in turn guaranteed access to the Black Sea. This programme concludes with the disastrous naval engagement of 18th March. One, which meant that from that time forward, the Gallipoli campaign would be a combined operation with the army committed to a landing on the peninsula. Content licensed from ITV Global. The Japanese fleet is disintegrating, and the Imperial Navy conducts its last major operation in the Philippines Islands. It ends with debacle: The risen battleships of Pearl Harbor avenge the attack in Surigao Strait, the Center Force is defeated in Sibuyan Sea, the jeep carriers and destroyers fend off a stronger Japanese force near Samar and the remaining Japanese aircraft carriers are sunk. This Victory at Sea segment marked the near inevitability that the Japanese would accept defeat and surrender to the Allies.

Even though there was only one major naval battle in the Atlantic during World War 1, the navies played a huge role during the entire conflict. From troop transports to supplies and from unrestricted submarine warfare to the landing at Gallipoli: The life of a sailor in the Great War was dangerous. And it wasn't just the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea was full of navies and battle ships. Especially fairly new ship types like the submarine or the Dreadnought were a force to be reckoned with. » HOW CAN I SUPPORT YOUR CHANNEL? Note: Please turn on Closed Captions The Battle of Trafalgar (21 October 1805) was a sea battle fought between the British Royal Navy and the combined fleets of the French Navy and Spanish Navy, during the War of the Third Coalition (August--December 1805) of the Napoleonic Wars (1803--1815). The battle was the bloodiest naval battle of the war, and saw an end to nearly a century of British naval supremacy. (Alternate Universe) Noteable Alternate World Differneces: The storm arrives early. Nelson is a Admiral, instead of a Vice Admiral Admiral Nelson survives the battle. Admiral Villeneuve is killed. Real Admiral Cisneros is killed. Admiral Gravina makes it through the battle unscathed. Admiral Nelson still has his right arm. The British lose Trafalgar. HMS Victory is first to reach the Franco-Spanish line, not HMS Royal Sovereign. Admiral Gravina breaks formation. The Santisima Trinidad takes part against the Lee Column, does not fire on HMS Victory. Redoutable and Bucntaure have switched postions on the line. Principe de Asturias placed closer to the center of the line. Redoutable boards Victory, and has more emphasis on it's gunnery. Redoutable recieves fire support from the Santa Ana. HMS Temeraire intervenes by evacuating Nelson's crew, instead of raking Redoutable. Bucntaure sinks early. HMS Royal Sovereign sinks. Santisima Trinidad loses steering by rudder damage, and is destroyed. More info later... Thanks. :) Cut from Chinese movie "The Sino-Japanese War at Sea 1894" 2012. The Battle of Pungdo or Feng-tao was the first naval battle of the First Sino-Japanese War. It took place on 25 July 1894 of Asan, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea, between cruisers of the Imperial Japanese Navy and components of the Chinese Beiyang Fleet. Both China and Japan had been intervening in Korea against the Donghak Peasant Revolution. While China tried to maintain her suzerain relationship with Korea, Japan wanted to increase her sphere of influence. Both countries had already sent troops to Korea as requested by different factions within the Korean government. Chinese troops from the Huai Army, were stationed in Asan, south of Seoul, numbering 3,000 men in early July, could be effectively supplied only by sea through the Bay of Asan. This presented a situation very similar to the British position at the beginning of the Yorktown campaign during the American Revolution. The Japanese plan was to blockade the entrance of the Bay of Asan, while her land forces moved overland to encircle the Chinese detachment in Asan before reinforcements arrived by sea.
