KUNG FU in REALITY - SHAOLIN Style

10:09
The term Kung Fu refers to the martial arts of China. Kung Fu originated in a place called the Shaolin Temple, where monks practiced Kung Fu for health and self-defense during their quest for enlightenment. The first Shaolin temple was a Buddhist monastery built in 377 A.D. in the Henan province of China. In 527 A.D. a Buddhist prince, Bodhidharma, or Da Mo in Chinese, traveled to the temple for religious teaching, but found the monks weak and in poor health. To find a way to give the monks strength and vitality, Da Mo locked himself in a room for nine years of meditation. His resulting work, Yi Jin Jing, a series of exercises which developed strength, vitality, and internal energy, is considered the original Shaolin martial art. Historically, Kung Fu in China was an integral part in the education of scholars and the leaders of government. The Chinese people placed great value in the practice of Kung Fu because they felt it taught respect, patience, humility, and morality. Many Americans believe that Kung Fu is a term which describes a single martial art, much like Taekwondo, Judo, or Aikido. In reality, Kung Fu is a general term which includes hundreds of styles of Chinese martial arts. Some examples of Kung Fu styles are Long Fist, Eagle Claw, and Taiji Quan. Another misconception is that Kung Fu is a "soft" style compared with Karate or other "hard" styles. This is not so: each Kung Fu style contains both hard and soft techniques. Also, many people believe that Kung Fu is an external style and Taiji Quan is an internal style. While most Kung Fu styles emphasize external development, all styles of Kung Fu contain both internal and external components. ★ LIKE ★ COMMENT ★ SUBSCRIBE ★ SHARE FOR MORE VIDEOS: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=barfamily2011 ★ Music by The Artisans Beats - www.Artisansbeats.com & NCS ► Sport Motivation: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmw9rXTuLboDbX9O8U1zAm8pfGiwmc-3L ► Street Workout, Calisthenics: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmw9rXTuLboCBzw0fnKl0tKmu8vciNXme ► Bodybuilding & Fitness: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmw9rXTuLboBXEYX0WDCov4Iq3wIGrFn3

To begin with kung fu is based on nature. And one of the things that we find in nature are animals. And animals can determine the attitude behind what we are doing, the spirit behind the kung fu that we are practicing. So the five animals, they are; the tiger, dragon, leopard, snake and crane. Now there are tons of other animals but these are the five basic animals. So lets take a look at some of the animal movements. First, we have the tiger claw. The tiger claw incorporates the use of all five fingers as well as the palm. When using the five fingers, each finger would find a point. I can not only grab, but I can also rake. The dragon. The dragon uses a claw too. Its more like a talon though. Notice how the fingers are spread out. Here I can strike. I can strike. I can rake. I can pull. That's the dragon. Next, we have the leopard. The leopard paw is a flat fist. Notice how the fingers are nice and tight. Hand is flat. You can use this area to strike. Boom. Or we could strike, this way. If you were punching I can block and then, strike. Okay. The leopard is known for its strength and its power as it strikes. Now we'll look at the snake. Alright. When we are working the snake, we are working quick hand movements. Okay. Both inside, you can work outside as well. We can block down and then go up. Snake is known for its flexibility. The crane. All the fingertips come together. Hooking at the wrist. I can block, with the wrist. I can strike, boom, with the wrist. I can poke with the fingertips to soft areas. These, are the five animals of shaolin.

What Is Northern & Southern Shaolin? | Shaolin Kung Fu

Shaolin is divided into two main schools. Basically, everything above the Yangtze River and everything below the Yangtze River. Anything above the Yangtze River is considered Northern styles. Anything below is considered Southern style. These two schools of Kung Fu actually move slightly different and have a variety of techniques. It is said, "southern hands, northern legs." In the Southern techniques in the southern schools you want to be more stable to the ground and they want to deliver more powerful strikes. If I wanted to demonstrate what a Southern form would look like, it would look something like this. Sze! Wa! Sze! Ah! Ha! Wa! Ha! Sze! Notice the low stances. Notice that the foot moves first, the hand moves second. Now I'll demonstrate a Northern Shaolin form for you. You'll notice the longer movements and no animal sounds. You can notice the difference in the movement. One has jumps and falls, a little bit more kicks. The other one is much more lower to ground and much more stable. I'm Sifu Romain, and this is Northern and Southern Shaolin.

Shaolin 7-star kung fu

44:57
Shaolin kung fu 7-star form (七星拳: qixing quan), instructor: monk Dejun, from Shaolin temple - combat strategy: this style teaches tactics of turning defense to offense. the saying is "turn from guest to host (反客为主)." the normal logic is that the attacker actively advances and attacks in advantage and the defender passively retreats and defends in disadvantage. reverse these, i.e., while in defensive guard, actively advance, gain advantage, and make defense act as offense. to gain advantage, "exhaust the enemy at your ease (以逸待劳)," avoid unnecessary moves and defend opponent's attacks at ease with the least possible action. move simply yet effectively. to make defense act as offense, "steal beams and replace pillars (偷梁换柱)," i.e., intercept opponent's move by targeting his vital parts. for example, when he is going to attack with his arm or leg, instead of waiting to block his arm or leg, suppress his move by hitting a sensitive part of his arm or leg, like his biceps or his shin, or another vital part, like his stomach. as another example, instead of just blocking or avoiding his kicking leg, intercept his balance by targeting his other, supporting leg. while in defensive guard, "befriend far enemies, attack the neighbor (远交近攻)," target closer points, because short-range attacks are quicker, safer, and have more chances of success. these 4 are the main tactics of Shaolin defensive style. - history: 'chang hu xinyi men' was first created by the Song dynasty monk Huiwei (惠威) in the early 1100s. it first had about 36 postures. his disciple, monk Haizhou (海舟), increased it to about 66 postures. in the late Yuan dynasty (1279-1368), monk Jinnaluo (紧那罗) increased it to 72 and monk Zian (子安) to 82. monk Juexun (觉训) and, in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), monk Tongxiang (通祥) improved the form. in the Qing dynasty (1644-1912), in the mid 1700s, monk Jiran (寂然) removed 28 repetitive postures and added 30 new postures and it became about 84 postures in total. meanwhile, after the Yuan dynasty, some Daoist concepts, like astrological notions, were introduced into Shaolin temple via outsider visitors. one of these was the astrological notion of the 7 stars, that is, another name for the big dipper constellation, which, in Chinese martial arts, refers to any formation that resembles the shape of the big dipper, like the closed-guard formation of the arms in 'qixing quan' (7-star form). Shaolin monks developed qixing quan sometime before the early 1600s by combining Shaolin xinyi ba style, which imitates daily and farming activities by using harmonious arm movements in small-frame stances, with rooster-imitating gestures, postures, and moves, and this 7-star concept. these small-frame 7-star and rooster notions were also combined into the chang hu xinyi men form in the latter edittings mentioned above. in this way, qixing quan and chang hu xinyi men were formed and perfected. - note: there are various other forms and styles named 'qixing quan' or 'xinyi quan' in Chinese kung fu, and they are historically and technically different from Shaolin quan. these are just different styles with similar names. __________________ Shaolin kung fu tutorial: - training: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB9EB410ECABF43C8 - styles: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8F75C68BF1246C2B - weapons: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE48D537F756421A2

Shaolin big Buddha kung fu, simplified, combat methods

01:16:06
Shaolin Buddha style (罗汉拳: luohan quan), instructor: Zhang Shijie - combat strategy: this style teaches tactics of avoidance and camouflage. in Shaolin kung fu, 'Zen Buddhism and martial art unite (禅拳合一)'. in the Buddha style, moves are hidden behind Buddhists' 'Amituofo! (阿弥陀佛)' salute and other holy postures of the enlightened Buddhists (which are called 'luohan' in Chinese and 'Arhat' in Sanskrit). Amituofo is the prayer for infinite life, infinite light, and infinite wisdom, as both a virtue to credit respect and prohibit violence and also a defensive/offensive camouflage. the saying is "watch fires from the far side of the river (隔岸观火)," that is, avoid engagement in violence as far as possible. in a confrontation, 'peace is better than victory, retreat rather than engage, avoid rather than oppose, deflect rather than block, block rather than hurt, hurt rather than wound, wound rather than kill, because life is precious, and a life lost is lost forever.' the "beauty tactic (美人计)" is about camouflaging with inoffensive, friendly means. for defense, "golden cicada sheds its shell (金蝉脱壳)," change the appearance of your moves so that they do not attract opponent's attention, and for offense, "hide the knife behind a smile (笑里藏刀)," hide your offensive moves behind inoffensive masks. these involve fully controlled moves to avoid, stop, or control the opponent rather than hurting him directly, and low stances, turns, twists, and cover-ups to keep the offensive and defensive moves hidden to the last moment. these 4 are the main tactics of Shaolin Buddha style. - history: Shaolin monks developed luohan quan as the earliest style based on the luohan 18 hands in the earlier eras of Shaolin temple. at the beginning of the Song dynasty in the 960s AD, this style was first officially recorded into the 'Shaolin kung fu manual' by chief monk Fuju (福居). ever since, it has been considered as the purest and most representative style of Shaolin kung fu. - note: there are various other forms and styles named 'luohan quan' in Chinese kung fu, and they are different from Shaolin luohan quan. these are just different styles with similar names. __________________ Shaolin kung fu tutorial: - training: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB9EB410ECABF43C8 - styles: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8F75C68BF1246C2B - weapons: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE48D537F756421A2

Kung Fu in UFC (MUST WATCH!)

05:37
If you don't think the techniques of kung-fu can work in a cage (at the highest level), think again. Some kung-fu techniques cannot be used inside the cage, due to the ruleset, but there are still plenty which can and already are being put to use! Kung-fu is considered the root of all martial arts, if you train for performance, your kung-fu will only be good for performance. If you train for fighting inside a cage (with plenty of place to move, against trained strategic martial artists), you will be able to use your kung-fu inside the cage (example: Cung Le who trained sanda and competed in wushu competitions before MMA). If you train for self defense (attacks from the back, multiple opponents, improvised weapons, agressive thugs) you will hone and adapt your kung-fu for those scenarios. No martial arts purpose is greater than any other. Some styles lend themselves more to one purpose than others (capoeira is easier to impress an audience with than krav maga, while krav maga is easier to use for self defense) but what matters most is not what you train but how. 'simplified luohan quan', as we may call it here, is practiced in Dengfeng area around Shaolin temple. it is somehow different from the original Shaolin luohanquan. while the original Shaolin small and big luohan quan forms imitate the Buddhist luohans, in the simplified forms they've omitted or changed most the luohan-imitating postures of Shaolin small and big luohan quan forms. in this sense, these simplified forms lack the character of the luohan quan of Shaolin temple and it's really not appropriate to consider them 'luohan quan'. so, i recommend you learn the original luohan quan forms instead, and i just put this video here for informational purpose only. you may have seen these simplified forms performed by many people, like here monk Deyang performs it, and also many others like monk Deqian (who compiled the most simplified forms of small and big luohan quans into his Encyclopedia: http://www.scribd.com/lists/4133108 , see volume 2, p. 188-208), and monks Deqi, Decheng, Xinghong, abbot Yongxin, late monk Degen's disciples like Liu Zhenhai, Zhu Tianxi and his disciple Zhang Shijie, and numerous others. the fact is sometimes you may see the simplified small and big luohan quans performed with radically big differences. this is because people have kept changing these forms on their own by adding in random stuff taken from the original Shaolin small and big luohan forms and other Shaolin forms. for example, the simplified form of Shaolin big luohan quan which folk Shaolin master Li Gensheng (李根生) taught in Dengfeng is considered the standard form of the simplified big luohan quan. however, the form is extended to 3 sections by considering it as 2 sections and adding an extra 3rd section to the end. monk Degen changed it a bit and added an extra 3rd section to the end when teaching it to Zu Tianxi. Zhang Shijie performs it without the extra section. Liu Zhenhai learned it as a 3-section form with more moves from the original big luohan quan and other standard forms, like big hog quan and pao quan, and a totally different 3rd section. here, monk Deyang performs the standard form with a simplified version of Liu Zhenhai's 3rd section plus a few intermediary moves. monk Deqian's encyclopedia also has an even more simplified version of this 3rd section. you know that people have even recently added an irrelevant 3rd part to the original Shaolin big luohan quan. this process does not end here in just simplifying and adding some stuff to luohan quan. for the first time, in the Jin and Yuan dynasties (1115-1368), monk Jueyuan (觉远) with the help of folk masters Bai Yufeng (白玉峰) and Li Sou (李叟) tried to extend Shaolin luohan quan. originally, there were only 4 or so luohans, the holy Buddhist icons who reach nirvana (enlightenment), in Chinese Buddhism, but into the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644), this number has been gradually increased to 18. this motivated people to make some extended luohan quans with 18 forms. these systems usually have 9 or 18 forms, one form for each or a couple of the 18 luohans; we call these the '18 luohan quans'. for example, monk Degen knew at least 3 totally different 18 luohan quans and taught some forms of each system to 3 of his disciples: monk Yongwen, Liu Zhenhai, and Zhu Tianxi. a few forms of another 18 luohan quan is also promoted by abbot Yongxin and monk Yanzhuang from Shaolin temple. monk Yantong also teaches another different 18 luohan quan (http://www.scribd.com/doc/143730581), which is also promoted in the Shaolin temple website. what is common between all these different 18 luohan quans is that they've gotten the simplified forms of Shaolin small and big luohan quan and have extended them by random moves and random forms to make them fit 18 characters. sometimes, people call their extended small luohan quan as big luohan and call their simplified big luohan quan as small luohan quan, which is just a confusion out of ignorance. anyway, these simplifications and extensions lack the character of luohan quan and none of them have found their ways into the core curriculum of Shaolin temple and most of them are considered as rare and even lost. once again keep in mind that the original Shaolin luohan quan has just 2 forms: small and big luohan quans, which you can learn from the videos in this channel. Shaolin kung fu Buddha's 18 hands, combat methods

01:00:26
Buddha's 18 hands (罗汉十八手: luohan shiba shou), instructor: monk Deyang, from Shaolin temple - combat strategy: "fleeing is the first tactic (走为上策)." however, if you're determined and have a reason to fight, you should learn some tactics to fight. Chinese kung fu has 36 famous tactics of fighting. this style teaches prowess. the "empty city tactic (空城计)" is to keep calm, with no signs of fear or weakness and no pretense of offense or defense, like an empty city. it deters opponents in the disability of estimating your hidden powers. this involves combination of calmness and abundant prowess in moves. this is the main tactic of Buddha's 18 hands. - history: this is the oldest style of Shaolin kung fu. Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, entered Shaolin temple in 527 AD, and made meditation part of Shaolin monks' daily routine. monks had simple exercises to recover after meditation and cultivate their body as well. they combined martial art and Zen to form the union of body and mind. according to the historical records of Shaolin temple, in the Sui dynasty (581-618), monks of Shaolin temple had a select set of about 18 simple moves by combining the forms and expressions of daily activities and Buddhism. they later combined these moves into a combat form. since then, these have been the most basic moves of Shaolin kung fu, based on which all the other styles were developed. - note: there are various other forms and styles named 'luohan shiba shou' in Chinese kung fu, and they are historically and technically different from Shaolin luohan shiba shou. these are just different styles with similar names. _/\_ __________________ Shaolin kung fu tutorial: - training: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB9EB410ECABF43C8 - styles: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8F75C68BF1246C2B - weapons: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE48D537F756421A2

Shaolin drunken kung fu, form 1

53:19
Shaolin kung fu drunken style (醉拳: zui quan), instructor: monk Yanbin, from Shaolin temple - combat strategy: this style teaches advanced tactics of trapping and subduing the opponent. the "sowing dissension tactic (反间计)" is confusing the opponent. mentally, "be wise, play foolish (假痴不癫)," move unpredictably out of the framework of normal logic, and physically, the "self-infliction tactic (苦肉计)" is pretending to have weakness. these cause the opponent to either underestimate and loosen his guard or get confused as how to keep guard. you can even go further and "toss a brick to take gem (抛砖引玉)," expose some part of your body as bait to lure the opponent attack there. though risky, as defense, this can save you by luring the opponent away from his own plan and, as offense, can trap the opponent by luring him into your ambush. these involve unusual drunken-like moves. these 4 are the main tactics of Shaolin drunken style. - history: at the beginning of the Tang dynasty (618-907), in 621 AD, 13 monks from Shaolin temple intervened prominently in a war to help the new dynasty. Li Shimin (李世民), son of the emperor and the commander of the Tang army, appreciated it and endowed the monks with officialdom, land, and wealth, and came to Shaolin temple in ceremony of the victory, and gifted the monks with the permission to disavow the Buddhist rule of not consuming meat and wine. monk Zhishou (智守), one of the 13 monks, had a prior interest in wine before becoming a monk and is said to had been able to drink 5 catties of wine in one breath. following the permission, he grabbed a jar and drank a huge amount of wine. monks blamed him, but fully intoxicated, he challenged the monks in disorder with his staff and then bare hand when disarmed, and could defy a vary large group of monks. the abbot praised this 'drunken style' and it was adopted, refined, and inherited over generations. because of their Buddhist vows, monks did not standardize this style, but most lineages of the monks kept and developed it as their advanced style. - note: there are various other drunken forms and styles in Chinese kung fu, and they are different from Shaolin zui quan. most of them are based on imitating the Daoist tale of the 8 drunken immortals, while Shaolin zui quan is based on the Buddhist character of a drunken luohan. though technically similar, these are different styles. __________________ Shaolin kung fu tutorial: - training: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB9EB410ECABF43C8 - styles: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8F75C68BF1246C2B - weapons: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE48D537F756421A2

The first thing I want to talk to you about are the different ranges. Of course we have kicking, punching, immobilization, and grappling. And in Shaolin Kung Fu, we actually have techniques for each of these areas. Let's start with kicking, since it's the furthest range. Of course we have all the basic kicks. We have side kick. We have hook kick. We have roundhouse. And of course we can combine them, as well. Not only do we have those long-range kicks, we also have spinning techniques and sweeping techniques. If he steps forward, we can sweep him this way. There are many of those sweeping techniques and kicking techniques in Kung Fu. When we look at the hand techniques, we have eye jab. We have back fist. We have spinning back fist. We also have an array of hand techniques incorporating animal movements. The next range is what we call trapping or immobilization. This is using sensitivity training where we work on working on reflexes based on touch. So let's begin. That's was what we call pops out or locks out. Let me do it a little slower. Slapping hand entry. Punch. He blocks. I finger jab, grab, followed by another punch. If I can hit him once, I can hit him ten times. We can even add this right into grappling range. So from here, come in, right into our grappling range. In Kung Fu, if I want to go to grappling range from kicking, I can have my partner kick. I can block, grab and sweep. I'm Sifu Romain, and these are Shaolin fighting techniques.

And welcome to our demonstration of Shaolin Kicking Techniques. To begin with, we're going to start with the side kick. This is a very basic kick. Ready? He's going to bring his hands up. We're going to do it nice and slow first. Bring your hands up, and he's going to step in with the rear foot. As he brings the rear foot in, he's going to lift the front foot and strike with the bottom or the heel of his foot. Okay? Let's try it full speed. Okay? Let's go to the next kick now. The roundhouse kick. Many styles use this kick. It's very important that as you do it in this scenario that you snap the kick back. Let's take a look at that in full speed, the roundhouse kick. Hi. I'm Carl Romaine. Welcome to our demonstration of Shaolin Kicking Techniques. We'll start from the very basic kicks all the way to a little bit more advanced. To begin with, we'll start with the side kick. From this ready position, he's going to step in with the rear foot, lift the front knee, and extend his leg out, striking with the bottom of his foot. A little faster. This is a very effective kick for self defense. This kick can be placed at the knee, as well as the hip, or even the head. The next kick we're going to demonstrate is the roundhouse kick. It's a very common kick. You see it in a lot of different styles. As he steps in, he's going to lift his knee, point his toe this time, and extend the leg towards the head. One more time, slowly. Step in, lift the knee and point the toe, extend and strike the head, making sure that he recoils after the kick. Now full speed. Our next kick will be the hook kick. In this kick, he's going to extend his leg out, just like he did in the side kick, and then hook or loop the kick towards his back. And slowly kick. And again. And now full speed. Our next kick will be the variation of that. It will be this spinning hook kick. It's a little bit more advanced. And in this scenario he's going to actually take a step as he goes into his spin and then execute a hook kick right from there. It's a very powerful kick. And one more time. The next kick he'll demonstrate is a crescent kick. This kick will come up towards the center and then out. Now striking with the bottom outside portion of his foot. Notice that the leg is straight. One more time. And the last kick we'll demonstrate is a very effective kick. It can be used either to strike the leg and break the knee, or even used to stop a kick. It's called in Cantonese. So he's going to do a cross-over knee kick, striking with the heel. One more time. Good. And full speed. This concludes our demonstration of Shaolin Kicking Techniques.

Check out the official app http://apple.co/1MXo0IZ Watch more How to Do Shaolin Kung Fu videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/507136-6-Hand-Techniques-Shaolin-Kung-Fu Hi. I'm Karl Romain, welcome to our demonstration of Shaolin hand techniques. To begin with we'll start from the stationary position, then we'll go hands up, standing horse, and now we'll start with basic punching. So he's going to hold his hand straight out, and he's going to focus here on the first two knuckles, keeping the wrist nice and straight, arm parallel to the ground, always making sure that as he strikes, both hands will hit the same point in the air, from here he's going to turn his hand over, pulling the hand back, and punch with the other hand, and continue, and punch, and punch, and punch, and punch. And of course you can do as many repetitions as you need to. OK, now we're going to do the palm technique. So right from where he was, he's going to hold his hand out, and we call this the Whirlwind palm, notice that the fingers are nice and tight, from his bent, the hand is turned, working on the strength with the edge of the hand. OK, pulling back on the wrist, again making sure that his arm is parallel to the ground, shoulders relaxed and every time he strikes, he's looking to strike the same point. And again, palm, good, and go, go, go, go, go and good. And back to attention. OK. Now we're going to work on a different technique. Kung fu is based on animal techniques , and one of the animal techniques is the crane’s beak, which looks like this, so now we're going to add that in and we're going to practice and exercise both punch, palm and hook. So from our attention, hands up, standing horse position and punch, cross the hands, palm, down and over the head, and hook. Hands in. Good. Punch, palm, hook, hands in, and one more, punch, palm, hook, hands in. Those are some of the basic hand techniques found in northern Shaolin. Now we’ll do a little bit of the southern techniques. So from here hands up, standing horse position, and now we're going to do a double palm, so he's going to hold both hands out, southern style palm, he's going to spread the fingers, striking with the heel of the palm now, again thumbs are bent, pulling back on the wrist. From here he's going to cross the hands, pull the hands in, notice how the palms are still facing out, and then strike straight out. And again, cross, in, out, good. And cross, in, out. And full speed go, go, go, and back to attention. Now we're going to do a short arm uppercut. Hands up, standing horse, and right from here we're going to turn to a forward stance, go. Now in this hand technique, we're also going to be using the leg. Really important to pivot as you strike to generate power. Elongate get your stance just a little bit more. And now in the short arm uppercut, is just like coming short, right? And then we're going to have a variation where we do the long arm uppercut where the arm is fully extended. When in this position you want this elbow bent, you want this arm in the rear down 45-degree angle. So pivot and punch, pivot and punch. Notice the timing and coordination. Pivot and punch. And full speed go, go, go,go. Now long arm uppercut. He's going to stretch out that arm all the way up. He's going to bring rear hand so it's parallel to the ground. He's going to keep his eyes on his fists, and turn, punch, turn, punch, turn, punch, and full speed go, go, go, go. And attention. This concludes our demonstration of some of the basic Shaolin hand techniques.

Discovering China - Shanxi Style Praying Mantis Kung Fu

05:49
[Ben] "So I'm here with Longfei Yang, he's a master of the Shanxi style Praying Mantis Kung Fu, thanks very much for being here with us today Longfei." [Longfei Yang, Praying Mantis Kung Fu Master] "I'm very happy to be here with everyone." [Ben] "So Longfei, can you give us a little introduction, what is the Shanxi style Praying Mantis?" [Longfei Yang, Praying Mantis Kung Fu Master] "The history of the Praying Mantis style can be verified by many historical records which all say that it started with a Chinese man called Wang Lang. Wang Lang saw some Praying Mantis's while he was in a competition. He had lost in a competition of martial arts and then saw a Praying Mantis fighting a cicada. Using the movements of the Praying Mantis he created the Praying Mantis style Kung Fu. Later on, the Praying Mantis was spread over the country through Shaolin Temples. In Chinese history, there was a General in Yuanguo Temple in Shanxi Province. When he went back to his hometown in Henan Province after his retirement, he found that a little Shaolin monk called Xiaolong was learning the Praying Mantis from the General's son. The little monk was very interested in this Mantis. The General was very unhappy that his son is teaching the Mantis to an outsider. In ancient China, families are usually conservative on this. Monk Xiaolong was very smart. He asked to become a disciple to learn the Praying Mantis. The abbot in the temple also helped him to convince the General to teach him. Thus, the General happily accepted him as a disciple and took him back to his Henan hometown to teach him the Mantis. Later on, this Mantis was spread in Shanxi and became the popular Shanxi Praying Mantis." [Ben] "So, what's the difference between Shanxi Praying Mantis and Shandong Praying Mantis." [Longfei Yang, Praying Mantis Kung Fu Master] "The most significant difference is that Shanxi Praying Mantis is more gentle. It's a gentle school of Praying Mantis, which is the method of using soft to overcome hard. Bending postures and straight postures are rotating, relying on inner strength and borrowing power to fight. Therefore it's called gentle Praying Mantis. Shandong Praying Mantis is strong, fast, and vigorous. So its style looks very hard and strong. Thus people called it martial Praying Mantis." [Ben] "So the Shanxi Tanglang is more of a soft style than the Shandong. Could you show us some of the basic techniques." [Longfei Yang, Praying Mantis Kung Fu Master] "One of the most important basic movements of Shanxi Praying Mantis is called Chanwan, which is moving the wrist, fingers, and joint. The practicing starts from making small circles. You can make circle from inside or outside. A simple circle can transform into Goushou and Huashou. If you spread out further, then it becomes Huashou. If you move toward inside, then it's Goushou. All the twisting and fighting are involved in one movement." [Ben] "So how those two techniques are used in combat?" [Longfei Yang, Praying Mantis Kung Fu Master] "It changes when you apply it. It's different when different people use them, and it changes in different situations. For example, when someone is punching, the fist can change into Huashou. When he's doing Goushou, it's like this. This is Gou and Hua." [Ben] "That's awesome and very powerful too. And I understand these techniques are also used for locking hands. How does that work." [Longfei Yang, Praying Mantis Kung Fu Master] "In the process of capturing someone, when catching on wrist, one's body can turn to push the power down. In this way, this person's joint will be locked." [Ben] "That's certainly very effective. Thanks very much for sharing some of the secrets of your Kung Fu with us today Longfei. Just lastly I know there are a lot of different forms of routines in the Praying Mantis Kung Fu. Perhaps you would like to show us some of those routines" [Longfei Yang, Praying Mantis Kung Fu Master] "Sure, no problem. Today let me show everyone the Dalianquan, of the Shanxi Praying Mantis"
