One of the most recognizable lighthouse photographs in the world. Perceived optical illusion at end. When first seeing the famous and historical photograph, most people assume that the lighthouse keeper must have been killed. In fact, the keepers had been living in fear of death during the 1989 storm and at one point had taken refuge in the lantern room of the tower. Waves the night before had smashed through the lower windows of the tower, causing the structure to flood, washing away everything in its path including the television, table, chairs, coffee maker and even the refrigerator. The keepers in fact were waiting to be rescued by helicopter. Assuming the rescue chopper had arrived, one of the keepers opened the lower door of the structure and looked up at the helicopter but realized that it was not the rescue chopper. He also realized that a giant wave was about to engulf the tower. He immediately turned about and pulled the door closed behind him. Had he not done so at that second, he surely would have been killed. Awareness Alert: There are only 4 Northern White Rhinos left on Earth, making them the most critically endangered species. This magnificent creature will vanish before our eyes... endextinction.org

A US-operated Antarctic cruise ship with 160 people aboard has lost an engine in high seas, but is limping safely to its scheduled port. The Argentine Navy said the Clelia II declared an emergency on Tuesday, reporting it had lost an engine amid heavy seas and 55 miles per hour (90 km per hour) winds. The ship, operated by Polar Cruises of Bend, Oregon, has 100 passengers and 60 crew members aboard. The Perfect Storm movie clips: http://j.mp/1CP5FdV BUY THE MOVIE: http://bit.ly/2cyVSFT Don't miss the HOTTEST NEW TRAILERS: http://bit.ly/1u2y6pr CLIP DESCRIPTION: Bobby (George Clooney) struggles against the storm at the wheel of his boat. FILM DESCRIPTION: In October 1991, a dying tropical hurricane from Bermuda collided with a cold front from the Great Lakes, resulting in a "perfect storm" of previously unknown destructive impact that resulted in 100-foot waves; tragically, the crew of a fishing boat was lost in the midst of the fearsome storm. Based on the best-selling book by Sebastian Junger, The Perfect Storm tells the story of the ship's brave and hard-working crew. Billy Tyne (George Clooney), captain of the Andrea Gail, hasn't had much luck finding catch on his most recent trips to sea, and with money short, he and his crew -- Bob Shatford (Mark Wahlberg), Dale Murphy (John C. Reilly), and David Sullivan (William Fichtner) set out again when they hear that the fish are running. Billy's hunch proves correct, but when the ship's refrigeration system goes haywire, they have to return to shore as quickly as possible before the fish spoil, sending them into the middle of the worst storm in history. The supporting cast includes Mary Elziabeth Mastrantonio, Diane Lane, Bob Gunton, and Karen Allen; Wolfgang Petersen, whose breakthrough film was the aquatic wartime drama Das Boot, directed. CREDITS: TM & © Warner Bros. (2000) Cast: George Clooney, William Fichtner, John Hawkes, John C. Reilly, Mark Wahlberg Director: Wolfgang Petersen Producers: Alan B. A Sydney man has captured incredible photos of monster waves lashing the sides of the Manly ferry. The somewhat terrifying photographs could be taken straight from a scene from climate disaster flick The Day After Tomorrow. The ferry ‘greaser’ Haig Gilchrist took the chance to show off his photography skills, as wild weather hit Sydney Harbour last weekend. In the middle of the chaos he managed to capture a massive wall of water, towering next to the side of the ferry. “Great day to be working,” he wrote in a Instagram comment on the picture. “East Coast Low intensifying,” the photo was captioned. "It was only for a few hours it went a bit insane. Made it pretty busy with swell and sail boats," he wrote on a photo taken during Saturday's storms. 5 Mega Tsunami Caught On Camera — Enjoy the video. Rate, Comment, Share... Thanx For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea. Out in the depths of the ocean, tsunami waves do not dramatically increase in height. But as the waves travel inland, they build up to higher and higher heights as the depth of the ocean decreases. The speed of tsunami waves depends on ocean depth rather than the distance from the source of the wave. Tsunami waves may travel as fast as jet planes over deep waters, only slowing down when reaching shallow waters. While tsunamis are often referred to as tidal waves, this name is discouraged by oceanographers because tides have little to do with these giant waves. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was triggered by a 9.3 magnitude earthquake with the initial surge wave of the tsunami measuring 33 metres. It was the largest earthquake-generated tsunami in history. Certain places in the world are subject to earthquakes and tsunamis more than others as there are only seven tectonic plates covering the earth and the borders of these plates lie in certain areas. Top 10 best tornado video countdown. Tornadoes manifest themselves in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some are a wondrous bright white, others are dark horrific, monsters. Most are harmless grazing over rural farmland, others are worst case scenarios. I've been chasing tornadoes since 1999 and these are my top ten best tornado videos. For licensing HD or 4K tornado footage contact [email protected] Tornado Sound: The roar of a tornado sounds different depending on it's size, how close you are and what the tornado is striking. Ones I've heard over open fields often sound like powerful waterfalls. The bigger the tornado, the louder and deeper the rumble. Ones moving through trees get louder and can sound more like a jet engine. In town, where there are lots of homes and buildings an approaching tornado might sound like a freight train with the clickity-clack noises of airborne missiles and heavy debris slamming into your neighbors homes. #10 on this countdown was an extremely close, stationary tornado twirling 50 yards in front of my vehicle. #9 The El Reno Oklahoma on May 31, 2013 was the widest tornado ever recorded. Mobile doppler recorded 295 mph winds just above the surface as this tornado grew to a record breaking 2.6 miles wide. The tornado occurred over mostly rural farm. Because the most powerful winds did not strike any anchored structures, this tornado only received an EF3 rating. #8 was a beautiful, white, shape-shifting EF4 tornado descending from a tight, high base near Alpena South Dakota on June 18, 2014. #7 and # 6 belong to the Pilger Nebraska twin tornadoes that touched down on June 16, 2014. Two tornadoes on the ground at the same time isn't common, however two almost identical powerful EF4's in close proximity is extremely rare. # 5 occurred in Cedar County Nebraska on June 17, 2014. This violent tornado occurred over mostly open farm land and received a underrated EF3. #4 touched down just south of Dodge City Kansas as two mesocyclones buckled into each other like gears. This storm was a long lived cyclic supercell responsible for dropping a dozen or more tornadoes on May 24, 2016. For most of this tornadoes life, it shared the stage with another nearby tornado and at one point three tornadoes were on the ground at the same time. #3 was a long lived, extremely violent tornado touching down near Chapman Kansas or Abilene Kansas on May 25, 2016. For ninety minutes this finely tuned machine was on the ground. Unbelievably, this breath taking EF4 did not claim any lives. #2... If ever a thing haunts your dreams, It might resemble the remorseless Katie-Wynnewood Oklahoma tornado of May 9, 2016. In seconds this EF4 ripped entire roof off its walls and tossed its fragments a hundred meters into the air. The rest of the house demolished. Trees hovers above the ground while roof trusses and 2x4's whirl around the tornado like feathers and a man looses his life. #1 takes us back south of Dodge City to that unprecedented day, May 24th, 2016. At least a dozen tornadoes touched down, but the first one was the ultimate beautiful tornado. For approximately 30 minutes this slow moving, perfect beauty presented the tornado of a lifetime up close! Well lit excellent conditions, with good roads provided a dream come true scenario for even the most dedicated veteran chasers. The images, taken in the coastal city of Qingdao in eastern China's Shandong Province, went viral on social media after a ferocious tempest blew through the town on Wednesday. The sea tornado fizzled out before making landfall on the coastal city of Qingdao China, but the marine creatures which had been whirling around in the storm cloud were suddenly spat out.Phenomena of this sort are not unprecedented, however, as examples of what scientists call the 'Rain of animals' exist throughout history.According to the Qingdao Meteorological Administration, violent weather was recorded in the late afternoon of Tuesday. In the pictures, an octopus and a starfish can be seen having stuck themselves to car windscreens.Other marine life to be swept ashore by the tempest included a starfish which stuck itself to another car.Seafood rain became a trending topic on social media after images were shared widely online. According to the city's meteorological service, the hurricane-force wind speeds generated during the storm set a new all-time record for June.Meterologists said the incident was probably caused by a tornado as it is common for tornados to suck up water and fish from rivers and drop them miles away.

We've received a lot of phone calls about the storm-and yes, we are still here! Ida has churned up the ocean quite a bit, but even around high tide things were fine. This video was taken at 8:30 a.m., and high tide was 8:51 a.m. today. You can see the snow fences are doing their job and creating protective sand dunes. The ocean fronts are unscathed-except for some sand-drifts. The bay high tide was at 4:04 a.m. and will be again at 4:21 p.m. We'll try to send info then. http://www.UltimateChase.com Exclusive (Emmy Award) video shot by Mike Theiss from ground zero of Hurricane Katrina's historic 28 foot storm surge that ripped through Gulfport, Mississippi on August 29th, 2005. This video has a time stamp to give a complete and accurate timeline from the Holiday Inn beachfront hotel located directly on the beach in Gulfport. Also, included are shots from the Theiss-Device which is a camera housing designed by Mike to be placed in a place that would be too dangerous from any human to survive. This 13 minute video will give you a sense of just how bad Katrina was on the Gulf Coast without actually putting you in harms way !!! To see the entire version of this video about 2 hours in duration please purchase the DVD "Battle at the Beachfront". http://www.BattleAtTheBeachfront.com We hope this documentation helps enforce a sense of storm awareness and a respect for the power of mother nature. When local officials ask you to evacuate just think of this video and ask yourself do you want to risk being put in a situation like this ?

You’re probably no stranger to waves in the ocean. Little waves are fun to jump over on the shore, and the bigger ones can be a blast to surf on! But there are some waves that you really don’t ever want to encounter when you’re swimming in the ocean. Square waves look like a giant chess board over the ocean. It's pretty awesome but incredibly dangerous. If you don’t get out of the water as soon as you see these things, your life could be at stake! So what are these things anyway, and where do they appear? Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - If you look off the western coast of France, you’ll see the Isle of Rhe. The coolest part about it is what you see just beyond the shore: square waves. This strange wave pattern looks like a giant chess board over the ocean. - When two different swells coming from opposite directions meet, it’s known as a cross sea. This is what generates these square waves you see near the Isle of Rhe. - Because these two seas have totally different weather conditions, a unique pattern emerges when they collide. They create a riptide that’s stronger than your average wave - way stronger than what you’ve probably experienced at the beach with regular waves. - There have been a handful of cases where people got caught in the cross sea, but, thankfully and luckily, they managed to get out safely. - These square waves have become somewhat famous over time given that there’s really no other place in the world that boasts a cross sea like this one. - The Boiling Lake on the Island of Dominica is one body of water you’ll definitely want to stay away from. From high heat to strong gas emissions, there are plenty of reasons to stay out of The Boiling Lake. - You’ll probably want to steer clear of the town of West End on Grand Bahama Island. This deadly beach is known for being one of the most shark-infested beaches in the world. - While the south and west coasts of Barbados are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, the east and north beaches have incredibly strong tides that can be quite treacherous. - Condado Beach in Puerto Rico is a desirable destination in the city of San Juan. However, the beach’s mighty waves and powerful current make this a very dangerous place to go swimming. In this episode of Sailing A B Sea we make a run for the safety of Kaş Marina as the wind and waves of a huge storm smashes Kaş harbour. The day before the storm smashes Kaş harbour we get warnings from the harbour master and several captains of neighbouring gulets. When the Turkish coast guard relocated their vessel from the harbour to the marina we knew things were about to get serious. This video was taken on the 7th of december 2007 in "Raz de Sein" at the western tip of France, in Brittany, on a (very) stormy day. Those lighthouses isolated in the open sea are/were called "Hells" because of the roughness of living conditions inside these isolated buildings, frequently harassed by the elements. The first one seen in the video is Ar Men ("The Rock" in Breton), one of the best known lighthouses because of its isolated situation and the considerable difficulties its construction has presented (14 years were needed to build it !!), and the danger in evacuating its personnel. Considered as one of the most challenging workplaces by the community of lighthouse keepers, it has been named "The Hell of Hells". It has been automated in 1990. Later we can see Tévennec, a little known lighthouse situated on the east side of the Sein Island. It had such bad luck in store for its guardians that it was suspected to be baleful, or even haunted. Indeed, during stormy weather, some keepers reported that gloomy screams could be heard. Recently a cave was found in the rock on which Tévennec was built, that may explain the weird noises heard by the keepers. Since nobody wanted to live on this rock anymore, this lighthouse was automated way before the others, in 1910. Nowadays, general automation makes human presence useless aboard these ocean look-out posts. In 2004, Kéréon, the Palace of the sea, the last lived-in open sea lighthouse, definitely closed its doors over its magnificent woodwork and its compass rose made in ebony and mahogany. The previous automated lighthouses were : Armen (1990), la Jument (1991), les Pierres Noires (1992), le Four (1993), la Vieille (1995). As nobody is here to scour, fix and maintain those lighthouses anymore, they are slowly detoriating. If nothing is done they may collapse in the coming years, like it happened to an auxiliary tower at La Vieille lighthouse during a storm on the 10th of April 2008.
