Watch more How to Have a Career in Graphic Design videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/509224-What-Is-a-Style-Guide-Graphic-Design So what is a style guide? A style guide is a guide made by designers, usually for either other designers or other people within an organization to know how to use the assets that have been designed for that company. In which case, now we'll take a look at Skype's branding guideline. So, a guideline or a branding guideline, also known as a style guide, also known as an asset guideline. There's so many different names that it has, but what it does is it actually tells a story. It tells you how the logo came about, how to use their logo, what not to use their logo on. So, for this one, Skype says the dos and the don'ts, where don't put red behind it because there's no red in the Skype logo. Or don't change the orientation. Don't put a drop shadow. It also tells you what typefaces they use. They use different ones like Arial, Tahoma and on Mac they use Helvetica and Lucida Grande and then they also tell you which colors that they also use as well. A style guide is important because it helps keep your brand consistent. It lets your customers know that you care and it lets your designers know also that you care about the work that you've done for them. That means not stretching their logo or not putting it against like, a flashing background, or not using the colors that were specifically chosen for your organization from your branding strategies. Style guides are really important because sometimes the same designer won't remain on for the project and the new designer needs to know how to treat certain things or where to find the files to do certain things that the website may need. It's important to include a style guide in your design because it shows that you're thinking ahead, and it shows that you have really put like, the thought and the care that goes into branding a company and making sure that you not only explain it, but respect it.

A style guide is a set of standards in terms of the writing designing and presenting of a document, this is most commonly used for publications, organizations and fields. Why would you need a style guide? By creating a style it creates consistency for your brand and brand communication. Color pallets (Coca cola), When creating a brand it’s important to select color that represents the brand and stay consistent when using the colors. 2. Do and don’ts. Due to a strict set of rules it is possible to establish don’ts such as don’t for consistency. 3.Photography Photography is used to get an overview of the aesthetic that you want to create for a brand. With the aesthetic aspect the way you want to present yourself through the use of pictures and images. Typography Typography is the style and appearance of printed matter in this case it’s the often the main tool of communication to present your branding. http://panopto.com/blog/how-to-build-a-brand-style-guide-your-people-will-actually-use/ For any organization in any market anywhere in the world, the first step to creating a brand guidebook your team will actually use is to assess what elements your team actually needs. Without question, your creative teams will find value in the full details provided in the now-traditional encyclopedic style book. Sharing that in-depth technical resource with the rest of your employees, however, is simply overkill. Branding is an exercise in simplifying the way your organization visually represents itself — the first step in successful branding is simplifying how you set brand expectations with your teams. 1 | Assess Your Brand’s Touchpoints — Where Do You Need To Be Consistent? The single most important job your brand has is to provide a consistent appearance for your customers and partners. Consistency is reassuring and affirming — it signals that they’ve found the right place, and are communicating with someone who can help. Your organization may have many touchpoints or only a few. No matter the total, these comprise the entire foundation of your brand. Consider carefully how you expect your employees to represent your organization at each. 2 | Determine The Absolute Minimum Your Team Needs To Know To Represent Your Brand This is where most brand guidebooks fail. Recognize that most employees don’t need to know the technical details or the philosophical rationale behind every brand decision — they just need the top-line essentials. In many organizations, that list of essential items will be simply how to get the correct logos, colors, and fonts for presentations and email communications. It may also include dress code and conversation expectations for those companies with a retail sales or on-site service model. 3 | Find A Way To Make Only Those Essentials Easy To Find, Learn, And Share Here is where a short video presentation can make all the difference. According to Forrester Research, employees are 75 percent more likely to watch a video than to read documents, emails or web articles. More engaging than text, video can make your message memorable, and helps you to highlight exactly what your people need to know. Moreover, video helps you create a valuable reference resource for your company. A quick recorded rundown of your brand standards is a tool that can be easily included in your onboarding programs, and also provides front line managers with a simple way to remind their teams to follow protocol. Best of all, for Panopto customers, your Panopto video library automatically indexes every word spoken and every word that appears onscreen in your recordings, so that any employee who needs to find a specific detail (like Hex color codes or the right font for web use) can quickly search across every video in your company archives and find exactly what they were searching for — and even instantly fast forward to the specific relevant moment.

When it comes to building a memorable brand, it's all about consistency. When you're shopping for your favorite cereal or coffee at the grocery store, you want to be able to spot it from a mile away. The best brands stick in our brains because their presence is defined by the repetition of the same logo, fonts, colours, and images. Once we see them enough, they become instantly recognisable, bringing us a clear sense of reliability and security. Developing a consistent brand starts with creating a brand style guide. Here is a snippet of the style guide we recently created for a client Branding and style guide by StartTeck.com

From the complete course, Creating a Brand Style Guide with Pariah Burke http://abbrv.it/BrandingVid --- Your brand is your communication—every communication, in every form, whether it’s an active or passive interaction. Your brand is how your company speaks for itself when a customer, vendor, or the press gives your company a chance to speak for itself as well as what your company says passively while being viewed from a distance. A brand style guide gives your team the direction it needs to control those interactions, to ensure that every interaction between your brand and someone else communicates what you want to communicate with as little room for inference as possible.

The second most populous city after Johannesburg, Cape Town's sneaker scene goes head-to-head with that of The City of Gold. The trend began in the '90s after apartheid was abolished and the city started receiving an influx of foreign media. Sporting giants from Portland and Herzogenaurach flocked to the Cape, establishing themselves in the new market via the introduction of Torsions, ZXs, Air Maxes and Air Jordans. Seen as status symbols amongst the youth in the notorious Cape Flats neighborhood, these models were endorsed by a different hero from the West, as drug dealers strut through the strip in expensive foreign footwear which helped paint a picture of success. While gangs and violence still run rampant, the sneaker (and legislative) capital of the country now plays host to exchange conventions and reselling events, garnering attention from across the Western Cape. The movement is rife in part thanks to a number of store which ensure the locals are kitted with the hottest kicks. In this segment of "Mzansi Style Guide," we visit Shelflife, a mainstay frequented by writers and sneakerheads. Launched by Nick Herbert, the store opened its doors originally to sell spraypaint and has since gone on to be a Tier 0 stockist, putting SA on the map with releases such as its patriotic New Balance 574 collaboration which pulls colors from the city's trains, alongside motifs from traditional tribal artwork and the indestructible Parktown prawn cricket. We also venture to CBD, PUMA Select's concept store where the brand's slew of collaborations with the likes of A Bathing Ape, SWASH and Rihanna are shelved in a boutique setting. Lastly, we check out Lost Property, a sneaker den tucked away in Rheede Street Mall where a young reseller turned his past time into a full-fledged business quenching the appetite of restless sneaker addicts. "The same kids who are spending money on the latest Yeezys are eating a $2 Gatsby sandwich on the street corner." said founder Zaid Osman. Following the trailer of "Mzansi Style Guide," we bring you the first episode of our three-part series which looks at South Africa's street culture and the personalities that make up its creative landscape. Dubbed "Braamfontein Scene," we take to the central suburb of Johannesburg. As part of a cultural arc that connects the historic Constitution Hill fort, the University of Witwatersrand and Newtown (where galleries, cafes and retailers flood the streets of the newly developed tourist destination), Braamfontein is situated bang in the middle of the City of Gold but is a far cry from the economic and commercial metropolis Johannesburg has become. In this segment, we visit concept store Area 3, sneaker boutique DIP ST. and local hangout Father Coffee, all of which have become bastions of light for the streetwear community in Jozi. Tucked away on the second floor on an inconspicuous mall, DIP ST. has become a mainstay for those looking for both local and foreign brands. While DIP's operations continue to be hindered by crime -- with founder Tusa Mamba putting a halt on sneaker campouts for the safety of his customers -- the store and its surrounding retailers take pride in bridging the gap between rare, quality designs from Europe and the Far East and its loyal customer base. Check out "Braamfontein Scene" above and stay tuned for episode 2.
