The truth about unwanted arousal | Emily Nagoski

Sex educator Emily Nagoski breaks down one of the most dangerous myths about sex and introduces us to the science behind arousal nonconcordance: when there's a disconnect between physical response and the experience of pleasure and desire. Talking about such intimate, private moments can feel awkward or difficult, yet in this straightforward talk Nagoski urges all of us to share this crucial information with someone -- judges, lawyers, partners, kids. It’s not you, it’s my hormones Testosterone Influences | Lisa Welling | TEDxOaklandUniversity

16:25
My research finds that increases in testosterone is associated with increased preferences for sexually dimorphic (i.e., masculinity in males and femininity in females) characteristics and changes in self-perception. Specifically, research shows that testosterone influences perceptions by increasing preferences for masculine men and feminine women, and influencing men's perceptions of their own dominance. This research demonstrates that, far from being arbitrary, our preferences and perceptions are at least in part governed by biological processes and that beauty is not just in the eye of the beholder. Dr. Lisa Welling is an Assistant Professor at Oakland University. Her Ph.D., entitled Individual Differences in Face Preferences, was completed in 2008 and was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Grounded in evolutionary reasoning, Dr. Welling’s research generally surrounds three related areas: hormonal influences on behavior, sources of adaptive mate preferences, and interpersonal relationships. In addition to having co-edited a book entitled Evolutionary Perspectives on Social Psychology, Dr. Welling has published five book chapters and more than fifty scientific journal articles. Her research has been featured in the media multiple times on programs including lthe Oprah Winfrey Show and the Discovery Channel documentary Curiosity. In 2009, 11,341 untested rape kits -- some dating back to the 1980s -- were found in an abandoned warehouse once used by the Detroit police to store evidence. When this scandal was uncovered, prosecutor Kym Worthy set a plan into action to get justice for the thousands of victims affected. Understanding PTSD's Effects on Brain, Body, and Emotions | Janet Seahorn | TEDxCSU

15:59
PTSD disrupts the lives of average individuals as well as combat veterans who have served their country. The person experiencing the trauma often then impacts the lives of his/her family, friends, and workplaces. PTSD does not distinguish between race, age or gender and often goes undiagnosed. Even with proper diagnosis, many individuals do not know where to turn to get help. Society needs to understand the aftermath of trauma especially combat trauma and how to prepare for warriors when they return home. Janet Seahorn, Ph.D has been a teacher, administrator, and consultant for over thirty years. She currently teaches a variety of classes on neuroscience and literacy as an adjunct professor for Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. Jan has a Ph.D in Human Development and Organizational Systems. Her background includes an in-depth understanding of human development and neuroscience research as well as effective practices in organizational systems and change. She conducts workshops on the neuroscience of learning and memory, the effects of “at-risk” environments (i.e., poverty), brain development, and researched-based instructional practices. Jan has worked with many organizations in the business and educational communities in creating and sustaining healthy, dynamic environments. Dr. Seahorn has researched and studied the effects of trauma on the brain and how excessive or extreme trauma can impact changes in the brain’s neuro network and how that change impacts behaviors in s This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Addiction and trust: Marc Lewis at TEDxRadboudU 2013

09:55
A former drug addict himself, Lewis now researches addiction. In order to get over ones addiction, he explains, self-trust is necessary. Unfortunately, self- trust is extremely difficult for an addict to achieve. There are two factors that make it so difficult to get over an addiction: lack of self-control and an inability to put off reward. An addict wants his fix and he wants it now, despite the risk of losing out on a happier, healthier future. The way to build self-trust, Lewis explained, and get over an addiction is for the addict to begin an internal dialogue with his future self to convince his present self that it can, in fact, live without its addiction. Lewis finished by explaining how he did just that. By writing the simple word 'NO' on a piece of paper and reading it at every moment he had a craving, he gradually started believing that if he could cope a few hours without drugs, then he could cope for a few days and, eventually, for good. He pleads that the only real way to help addicts is to motivate them to place their trust in themselves and to encourage them to engage in their own positive internal dialogue. What no one ever told you about people who are single | Bella DePaulo | TEDxUHasselt

18:01
Movies, novels, love songs, and even scientific research all seem to tell us the same stories: Everyone wants to find that special someone. Once you get married, you will live happily ever after and you will never be lonely again. However, more people than ever before are living single – often by choice. A close look at the best scientific studies shows that people who get married do not end up happier or psychologically healthier than they were when they were single. The stories we have so often been told are distracting us from other stories about single people that we have never been told. The untold stories help us understand why so many people choose single life and thrive there, often finding meaning, fulfillment, autonomy, mastery, rich and varied personal relationships, and sweet solitude in their single lives. Hacking happiness -- how to give big data a direction: John C. Havens at TEDxIndianapolis

13:10
John C. Havens talks about: Quantified Self. The Internet of Things. Augmented Reality. Each of these technologies reflect aspects of our Digital Identity. Today, the Big Data representing our personal information is controlled by other people, keeping us from fully utilizing the insights based on our words and lives. By taking back our data and understanding how we can take a measure of our lives that embraces technology but also allows us to focus more on optimizing our well-being and the lives of others, we'll be able to Hack or rethink Happiness in a way that will give Big Data a positive direction to change our world, for good. Havens is Founder of The H(app)athon Project, a contributing writer for Mashable, The Guardian, and the Huffington Post and author of Hacking Happiness -- Why Your Personal Data Counts and How Tracking it Can Change the World. (Tarcher/Peguin, March 2014). The H(app)athon Project is a non-profit organization, "Connecting Happiness to Action" by creating sensor-based smartphone surveys utilizing economic indicators to increase civic engagement and wellbeing. As he describes it, his goal is not to achieve fluency in each, but rather to learn about foreign history and culture through the medium of language. He spends much of his time perfecting his linguistic skills in different neighborhoods around the city, and to date his Youtube channel has received over 3 million hits. Tim has been interviewed (in English, Mandarin, Arabic and Farsi, among others) for media outlets such as The New York Times, BBC, The Today Show, Reuters and The Economist. The True Gifts of a Dyslexic Mind | Dean Bragonier | TEDxMarthasVineyard

16:52
In this inspiring talk, advocate and educator Dean Bragonier offers a different take on Dyslexia. By looking at the unique mindset of Dyslexics as a strength, Dean reframes a perceived weakness as a powerful tool and teaches us all an important lesson about the power of an open mind and an open heart. Dean Bragonier is a social entrepreneur in the EdTech space. Shaped by the challenges associated with his dyslexia, Dean became an advocate for learning and disability equality and has founded, managed and served on the boards of organizations working to create systemic change in this field. As the Founder and Executive Dyslexic of NoticeAbility Inc., Dean leads a collaborative team from Harvard University, Tufts University and the Carroll School that is building curricula designed to offer authentic inquiry experiences in vocational subjects that cater to the neurological strengths of the dyslexic mind. Upon graduation, Dean embraced his entrepreneurial instincts and acquired a small seasonal restaurant on Martha's Vineyard Island that he transformed into a successful full-scale enterprise (see Boston Magazine, July 2001). It was through this endeavor that he was able to contextualize his years of laborious academic learning and discover the true gifts of his dyslexic mind.
