Yep I was a very Angry Bird when Cadbury reduced their 250g family block to 200g. This downsize was sinister and raised a number of chocolate lovers eyebrows. Here is a history lesson in this product back-flip. 1 The downsize of 20% was very well hidden with a change in packaging. No big corner statement saying now 20% smaller. 2 The cocoa percentage was reduced from 26% to 21%..very bad move, this was changed back after many consumers complained. 3 The nut variety now had crushed nuts and not full nuts. That made many nut lovers angry as they enjoyed full nuts in their chocolate. I wonder which Cadbury Gorilla decided to make all these changes at once? So in one downsize there were 3 major changes and the chocolate felt and tasted different. This prompted many people to start online campaigns on social media sites. The facebook campaign was possibly the biggest. Consumers also dumped the brand and found another chocolate to enjoy as it seemed Cadbury were ignoring the once loyal consumer complaints. Personally I chose Lindt Chocolate, the 70% Cocoa variety is lovely. So after 4 years there has been a major brand back-flip by Cadbury, we have been sold back by slick advertising the things we had 4 years ago...as if we are that stupid not to remember. The only difference is we are still 30g shy of the original 250g family block. It took time but in the end the consumers won the battle. The nut lovers now have full nuts to enjoy, the cocoa percentage is back to 26% and the chocolate looks very similar to the old 250g format. Also what's very interesting is Whittaker's Chocolate have just downsized their 250g blocks to 200g. The trump card they have is a higher cocoa percentage 33%. The Cadbury downsize has to go down as a perfect example of how to destroy a much loved and very trusted brand by making too many changes at one time. It's a lesson for anyone in business about the power of the consumer, and the delicate balance of your product in the consumers eyes. People hate sneaky changes and corporate spin to sell these changes, that's for sure. In the video I show all the changes to the new format 220g chocolate bars, but has Cadbury acted fast enough to get back the people who walked away from their brand ? It's very interesting Cadbury they tell us these changes are all new...that's just corporate BS, we are getting back what we had before but only after a massive consumer outcry. Maybe my video will have some come back to this brand, let me know if this happens by leaving a comment on the video. I'm sure Mr Cadbury will be reading with interest. 'Nayi dosti ka shubh aarambh' with Cadbury Dairy Milk The TVC conceptualised by Ogilvy Mumbai focuses on new friendships using the backdrop of a wedding ceremony The theme of the new TVC of Cadbury Dairy Milk celebrates the beginning of new friendships. Titled 'Nayi dosti ka shubh aarambh', the TVC showcases the first magical moments of a blossoming friendship between a young girl and a boy on the sidelines of a wedding, an occasion that in itself connotes new relationships. The traditional setting, combined with the contemporary twist results in an easily relatable and youthful TVC. It is set to hit TV screens nationwide on July 21, 2012, and is expected to have a presence in over 70 television channels. To further strengthen the brand's digital presence, the TVC was released online on YouTube and Facebook on July 13. The response in the first six days has been extremely encouraging with close to 573,000 hits on YouTube and 10,600 likes on Facebook. Speaking on the campaign, Chandramouli Venkatesan, Director, Snacking & Strategy, Cadbury India, said, "Cadbury Dairy Milk encapsulates an enormous breath of emotions, from shared values such as family togetherness, to the personal values of individual enjoyment. The latest TVC celebrates and honours another very important aspect of relationships -- the start of a new friendship." Abijit Avasthi, National Creative Director, Ogilvy India, said, "The campaign is perfectly timed to coincide with Friendship Day on August 5. This is an exciting, action-packed time for youngsters since colleges reopen at this time and they get to meet new people and start new meaningful friendships that last a lifetime." The TVC will be supported by a robust integrated marketing campaign, including on-ground activations in 80 colleges, creative print placements, interesting radio capsules on leading radio stations across many cities and outdoor, to urge people to make new friends and celebrate special "friendship moments." The commercial plays out at a traditional wedding ceremony. A teenage girl and boy exchange notes on how every family has a "dancing uncle/aunty" and an "allergy aunty/uncle". They quickly realise that the two families have much more in common than they thought. When the girl excitedly asks, "Tumhaari family mein mere jaisa kaun hai?", the boy smiles and replies, "Main". A piece of Cadbury Dairy Milk is exchanged to celebrate their new-found friendship and the closing voiceover says: "Nayi Dosti Ka Shubh Aarambh. Kuch Meetha Ho Jaaye."
