The Apocryphon of John, Female Voice, Audio Book

The Apocryphon of John, translated by Marvin Meyer http://www.gnosis.org/naghamm/nhl.html The Nag Hammadi Library, a collection of thirteen ancient books (called "codices") containing over fifty texts, was discovered in upper Egypt in 1945. This immensely important discovery includes a large number of primary "Gnostic Gospels" – texts once thought to have been entirely destroyed during the early Christian struggle to define "orthodoxy" – scriptures such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, and the Gospel of Truth. The discovery and translation of the Nag Hammadi library, initially completed in the 1970's, has provided impetus to a major re-evaluation of early Christian history and the nature of Gnosticism. Excerpt from: The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagels Vintage Books, New York: 1979 pp. xiii-xxiii ... those who wrote and circulated these texts did not regard themselves as "heretics. Most of the writings use Christian terminology, unmistakable related to a Jewish heritage. Many claim to offer traditions about Jesus that are secret, hidden from "the many" who constitute what, in the second century, came to be called the "catholic church." These Christians are now called gnostics, from the Greek word gnosis, usually translated as "knowledge." For as those who claim to know nothing about ultimate reality are called agnostic (literally, "not knowing"), the person who does claim to know such things is called gnostic ("knowing"). But gnosis is not primarily rational knowledge. The Greek language distinguishes between scientific or reflective knowledge ("He knows mathematics") and knowing through observation or experience ("He knows me"), which is gnosis. As the gnostics use the term, we could translate it as "insight," for gnosis involves an intuitive process of knowing oneself. And to know oneself, they claimed, is to know human nature and human destiny. According to the gnostic teacher Theodotus, writing in Asia Minor (c. 140-160), the gnostic is one has come to understand who we were, and what we have become; where we were... whither we are hastening; from what we are being released; what birth is, and what is rebirth. Yet to know oneself, at the deepest level, is simultaneously to know God; this is the secret of gnosis. Another gnostic teacher, Monoimus, says: Abandon the search for God and the creation and other matters of a similar sort. Look for him by taking yourself as the starting point. Learn who it is within you who makes everything his own and says, "My God, my mind, my thought, my soul, my body." Learn the sources of sorrow:, joy, love, hate . . . If you carefully investigate these matters you will find him in yourself. The "living Jesus" of these texts speaks of illusion and enlightenment, not of sin and repentance, like the Jesus of the New Testament. Instead of coming to save us from sin, he comes as a guide who opens access to spiritual understanding. But when the disciple attains enlightenment, Jesus no longer serves as his spiritual master: the two have become equal--even identical. Orthodox Christians believe that Jesus is Lord and Son of God in a unique way: he remains forever distinct from the rest of humanity whom he came to save. Yet the gnostic Gospel of Thomas relates that as soon as Thomas recognizes him, Jesus says to Thomas that they have both received their being from the same source: Jesus said, "I am not your master. Because you have drunk, you have become drunk from the bubbling stream which I have measured out.... He who will drink from my mouth will become as I am: I myself shall become he, and the things that are hidden will be revealed to him."

The Apocryphon of John, Christian Gnostic creation myth animation

instagram @WillLull I still need to finish the story, but I wanted to release what I have. I stopped animating this in 2011. It describes the introductory portion to the Sethian Gnostic creation mythology including the concept of the demiurge, Yaldabaoth. I used this specific script from the Apocryphon of John, yet there are four main texts describing this same story from different angles within the Nag Hammadi collection. On another note, here's a gallery if you're interested in seeing my paintings: https://imgur.com/a/byPPi

The Secret Book of John

54:12
A special show: three preeminent Gnostic scholars explain the Secret Book of John. Many experts claim this text is the complete Gnostic Gospel since it covers so many doctrines and myths — from the pre-creation story to the fall/redemption of Sophia; from the Demiurge in the Garden of Eden to the battle of Christ against the Archons…and so much more. Beyond deeply mining this forbidden work — from origins to theology — we compare it to other ancient writings like the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Judas, and the Bible itself. More than exploring the Secret Book of John, this is a spanning odyssey of the Sethian and other Gnostic traditions and culture. Astral Guests — Stevan Davies, author of The Secret Book of John, the Gnostic Gospels, Karen King, author of The Secret Revelation of John, and John Turner, author of Gnosticism and Later Platonism. The Secret Book of John - Michael Waldstein, Ph.D. (Introduction)

01:42
https://CatholicCourses.BenedictPress.com/index.php/Counterfeit-Gospels The Secret Book of John Gnostic Lies about God, Creation, and Procreation By: Professor Michael Waldstein, Ph.D. Formerly titled "Counterfeit Gospels: Gnostic Writings in the Early Church. Modern novels and movies claim the Church suppressed secret writings about Christ and his apostles for centuries...and they're right! If you've heard of The Da Vinci Code, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Jesus Scroll, Holy Blood Holy Grail, Foucault's Pendulum, or The Golden Compass, you've been told that the Church hid the "truth" from the world. In a way, these novels and movies are right. The Catholic Church did suppress and constrain the publication of these so-called "gospels." And with good reason. The Gnostic writings were circulated by pseudo-Christian sects who had broken communion with the Church. Many Gnostic texts claim to be eye-witness accounts of the apostles or secret divine messages which expand on Christ's public revelation. All of the Gnostic texts contain elements of heresy. Claims to Secret Knowledge Gnosticism comes from the Greek word gnosis which means knowledge. In itself, knowledge is no bad thing. However, in the Early Church there were many groups of people who claimed to have received secret revelations about Christ, his mother Mary, or even his apostles. Among these revelations are those contained in The Secret Book of John, a Gnostic text that rewrites creation and salvation history. It, along with many other Gnostic texts, were excluded from the formal list of the books of the Bible - called the "canon of Scripture" - by the Council of Carthage in 419 A.D. The Secret Book of John details a vision received by John the Apostle from Jesus. Retelling the Story Jesus tells John the "secret truth" about the creation of the world. He claims to be the Father, the Mother, and the Son, part of the incorruptible "Monad" - the great spirit who rules over all. In this reimagining of the Holy Trinity, there is the One (the Father), Barbelo, (a female emanence from the One), and Christ. The Monad created aeons - pairs of male and female spiritual beings who are like angels. One of these aeons, Sophia, sought to conceive a son without her male counterpart. This son was born a monster, and he is called Yaldabaoth. This monster-spirit then becomes the "god" over physical creation. According to The Secret Book of John, Yaldabaoth is the Yaweh of the Old Testament; an evil and perverse god who trapped the spiritual souls of Adam and Eve in matter. Yaldabaoth's wicked designs are perpetuated by human procreation... because bringing forth new life into a material world is a process of ensnaring more spiritual souls and trapping them in a physical form. Get the Truth In recent years, Gnostic writings like The Secret Book of John have gained in popularity due to references from a variety of media sources. Even those of us who knew the claims in The Da Vinci Code were fictional struggled to articulate the historical truth. Dr. Michael Waldstein, expert translator and commentator on the Gnostic text of the The Secret Book of John, will guide you through the claims of this false gospel. His commentary will help you understand why this book, and others like it, were excluded from the canon of Scripture. Dr. Waldstein discusses the danger Gnosticism poses to true Christianity - how it attempts to repaint salvation history, divide the so-called "God of the Old Testament" from Jesus Christ in the New Testament, and how it distorts the truth and goodness of God's creation. In this course, you'll get the truth you need to combat any Gnostic misinformation. About Your Professor Professor Michael Waldstein holds his Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Dallas, a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, and his Doctorate of Theology from Harvard University in New Testament and Christian Origins. He is the Max Seckler Professor of Theology at Ave Maria University in Florida. Previously, he taught at the University of Notre Dame and the International Theological institute in Gaming, Austria. His published works include a critical edition of the four Coptic manuscripts of the Secret Book of John, a Gnostic text discovered in the Nag Hammadi codices. His articles have been published in Nova et Vetera, Communio, Anthropotes, and the Journal of Early Christian Studies.

The Gospel of John (2003 Full Movie) [HD]

03:00:52
http://www.2028END.com An epic in the spirit of "The Passion of the Christ", this widely acclaimed motion picture is a meticulous recreation of the turbulent era of Jesus and the events that changed the course of history! Narrated by Golden Globe nominee Christopher Plummer (Best Supporting Actor, "American Tragedy, 2000), it's the bold and powerful story of Jesus as told by his disciple John. The best-loved but least understood of the gospels, John presents a uniquely human portrait of courage and passion encompassing Jesus' entire three-year ministry, the final years of his life. Intimate and reflective, "The Gospel of John" offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the incomparable life and times of Jesus Christ. The dialogue of the movie is word for word, solely based on the Good News Bible (also known as Today's English Version). We will review this text in order to establish the connections between the the approved canon and what are the gnostic texts found in 1946 in the desert surrounding Jordan and Israel. Being just slightly older than the gospels which make up the canon, the Nag Hammadi codices hold insight which in my opinion has largely been stript away and hidden by those seeking to deceive and lead astray the masses

It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried in response to a letter from Bishop Athanasius declaring a strict canon of Christian scripture. The Coptic-language text, the second of seven contained in what modern-day scholars have designated as Codex II, is composed of 114 sayings attributed to Jesus. Almost half of these sayings resemble those found in the Canonical Gospels, while it is speculated that the other sayings were added from Gnostic tradition. Its place of origin may have been Syria, where Thomasine traditions were strong. The introduction states: "These are the hidden words that the living Jesus spoke and Didymos Judas Thomas wrote them down." Didymus (Greek) and Thomas (Aramaic) both mean "twin". Some critical scholars suspect that this reference to the Apostle Thomas is false, and that therefore the true author is unknown. It is possible that the document originated within a school of early Christians, possibly proto-Gnostics. Some critics further state that even the description of Thomas as a "gnostic" gospel is based upon little other than the fact that it was found along with gnostic texts at Nag Hammadi. The name of Thomas was also attached to the Book of Thomas the Contender, which was also in Nag Hammadi Codex II, and the Acts of Thomas. While the Gospel of Thomas does not directly point to Jesus' divinity, it also does not directly contradict it, and therefore neither supports nor contradicts gnostic beliefs. When asked his identity in the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus usually deflects, ambiguously asking the disciples why they do not see what is right in front of them, similar to some passages in the canonical gospels like John 12:16 and Luke 18:34. The Gospel of Thomas is very different in tone and structure from other New Testament apocrypha and the four Canonical Gospels. Unlike the canonical Gospels, it is not a narrative account of the life of Jesus; instead, it consists of logia (sayings) attributed to Jesus, sometimes stand-alone, sometimes embedded in short dialogues or parables. The text contains a possible allusion to the death of Jesus in logion (Parable of the Wicked Tenants, paralleled in the Synoptic Gospels), but doesn't mention his crucifixion, his resurrection, or the final judgment; nor does it mention a messianic understanding of Jesus. Since its discovery, many scholars have seen it as evidence in support of the existence of the so-called Q source, which might have been very similar in its form as a collection of sayings of Jesus without any accounts of his deeds or his life and death, a so-called "sayings gospel". Bishop Eusebius (AD 260/265 – 339/340) included it among a group of books that he believed to be not only spurious, but "the fictions of heretics". However, it is not clear whether he was referring to this Gospel of Thomas or one of the other texts attributed to Thomas. Secret Gospel of Mark - Jesus initiated his Apostles in secret

09:10
The Mar Saba letter' is a Greek document which scholar Morton Smith reported in 1973 that he had discovered in the library of the Mar Saba monastery in 1958. The letter, addressed to one Theodore, discusses a "Secret Gospel of Mark" and quotes two excerpts from this gospel, one of which mentions "the mystery of the kingdom of God." Clement begins by commending Theodore's actions against the Carpocratians, a heretical sect. He then turns to address questions posed by Theodore regarding the Gospel of Mark, a secret variant of which the Carpocratians claim to have. Clement admits to knowledge of a second secret or mystical version of the gospel, written by Mark for "those being perfected". However, he asserts that the version promoted by the Carpocratians is not an accurate representation of this; they have corrupted the original with their own false additions. To illustrate this, two ostensibly genuine excerpts from the gospel are supplied. The letter breaks off abruptly as Clement begins to explain the passages. Through detailed linguistic investigations, Morton Smith argued that Clement's discovery could likely be genuine. He indicated that the two quotations go back to the original Aramaic version of Mark, which served as a source for the canonical Mark, but the quotations also reference the Gospel of John. According to Smith, the historical Jesus was a magus possessed by the Spirit. Jesus baptises the resurrected dead man in a possible same-sex act, and the libertinism of Jesus was then later suppressed by James, the brother of Jesus, and Paul. From a BBC documentary "Jesus the Evidence" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YxoeBzC4CE Read: Scott G. The book, a redaction and expansion of Scott Brown's doctoral dissertation, cuts a logical path through the thickets of 30 years of scholarly "folklore," removing "the weak, the misinformed, the fanciful, and the intellectually dishonest arguments" of which there have been more than a few. There are a number of reasons to praise this work. Here are a few of the more outstanding: First is the intellectual point of departure of the book. In large part, work on the "Secret Gospel" has been agenda-driven. Most critics of Smith's discovery and his interpretation of its significance have merely written in support of their "religious commitments" (to use Brown's very diplomatic terminology). Additionally, the majority have more or less closely followed Smith's interpretation of the evidence to the detriment of their own analyses. In contrast, Brown has had the temerity and good sense to step unencumbered from under Smith's shadow and address the textual evidence afresh, and has done so without disparaging the erudition or intelligence of Morton Smith. This approach has yielded rich rewards. Using a form of narrative analysis not contemplated when Smith published, Brown produces an examination of the text of Mark that moves well beyond the relatively superficial elements of vocabulary and syntax to reveal deeply embedded methods of Mark's narrative technique. The results of his study strongly confirm the authenticity of Clement's letter and the Markan fragments it contains, and offer a persuasive scenario for the composition and preservation of both. A further item of note is the clarification of mustikos, one of the words used by Clement to describe the nature of the longer gospel. Referencing the works of Clement, Brown demonstrates that the word is better (though still not adequately) translated "mystic" rather than "secret." Although the reading of the longer gospel was limited to those whose knowledge was being perfected, Clement clearly did not understand it to be either secret or apocryphal. A number of translators, the present writer included, must stand corrected on this point. Although other interpretive issues involving the gospel(s) of Mark, the gospel(s) of John, and the tradition behind them remain incompletely resolved, this book represents an enormous step toward that solution. Mark's Other Gospel is the standard by which all future work on the Clement letter and the gospel text it preserves will be evaluated."

THE APOCRYPHON (SECRET BOOK) OF JOHN

49:40
NAG HAMMADI CODICE "The Nag Hammadi codices, ancient manuscripts containing over fifty religious and philosophical texts hidden in an earthenware jar for 1,600 years, were accidentally discovered in upper Egypt in the year 1945. A group of farmers came across an entire collection of books written in Coptic, the very language spoken by Egyptian Christians. The excavations, prepared by James M. Robinson, the former director of the Institute for Antiquity and Christianity and Professor Emeritus at The Claremont Graduate School, did not occur until 1975 due to travel restrictions and a breakdown in political relations between the United States and Egypt. This immensely important discovery included a large number of primary Gnostic scriptures. One text in particular received much attention - the Gospel according to Thomas, which was originally called 'the secret words of Jesus written by Thomas'. These texts, scriptures such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, and the Gospel of Truth, were once thought to have been entirely destroyed during the early Christian struggle to define "orthodoxy." The discovery and translation of the Nag Hammadi library, completed in the 1970's, has provided momentum to a major reassessment of early Christian history and the nature of Gnosticism."
