“Losing Earth”: How Humanity Came to Understand Climate Change & Failed to Act in Time

11:58
https://democracynow.org - “Losing Earth.” That’s the title of The New York Times Magazine article by Nathaniel Rich published August 1 in a special edition of the magazine dedicated entirely to climate change. The story tracks the 10-year period from 1979 to 1989, the decade Rich claims that humankind first came to a comprehensive understanding of climate change but failed to address its extreme dangers while there was still time. The story was produced with the support of the Pulitzer Center. We speak with Nathaniel Rich, writer-at-large for The New York Times Magazine. From 1979 to 1989 scientists, activists and the government came close to solving global warming. Unfortunately, they didn’t act on the established science that showed climate change is not a hoax. New York Times Magazine Special Climate Issue lays out the narrative in two parts in their new issue. Losing Earth: The decade we almost stopped climate change. A strategy in two acts. New York Times Magazine Climate Change Issue - Panel Discussion

01:27:42
On August 5, 2018, the New York Times Magazine published a special issue devoted entirely to global warming. Writer Nathaniel Rich investigates what we understood about climate change in the 1980s, how close we came to taking national action, and why that effort failed, with enormous consequences since. The magazine also includes an aerial photo and video essay on climate-change impacts across the globe by photographer George Steinmetz. The project was made possible with the support of the Pulitzer Center. Please join us on Monday, September 10 at 5:30 p.m. for presentations by Nathaniel and George followed by a panel discussion with the Pulitzer Center’s Executive Director, Jon Sawyer, and moderated by Dr. Anthony Leiserowitz, Director of the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.
Climate Change: What Do Scientists Say?

05:05
Climate change is an urgent topic of discussion among politicians, journalists and celebrities...but what do scientists say about climate change? Does the data validate those who say humans are causing the earth to catastrophically warm? Richard Lindzen, an MIT atmospheric physicist and one of the world's leading climatologists, summarizes the science behind climate change. I’ve published more than 200 scientific papers. For 30 years I taught at MIT, during which time the climate has changed remarkably little. But the cry of “global warming” has grown ever more shrill. In fact, it seems that the less the climate changes, the louder the voices of the climate alarmists get. So, let’s clear the air and create a more accurate picture of where we really stand on the issue of global warming or, as it is now called—“climate change.” There are basically three groups of people dealing with this issue. Groups one and two are scientists. Group three consists mostly, at its core, of politicians, environmentalists and the media. Group one is associated with the scientific part of the United Nation’s International Panel on Climate Change or IPCC (Working Group 1). These are scientists who mostly believe that recent climate change is primarily due to man’s burning of fossil fuels—oil, coal and natural gas. This releases C02, carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere and, they believe, this might eventually dangerously heat the planet. Group two is made up of scientists who don’t see this as an especially serious problem. This is the group I belong to. We’re usually referred to as skeptics. We note that there are many reasons why the climate changes—the sun, clouds, oceans, the orbital variations of the earth, as well as a myriad of other inputs. None of these is fully understood, and there is no evidence that CO2 emissions are the dominant factor. But actually there is much agreement between both groups of scientists. The following are such points of agreement: 1) The climate is always changing. 2) CO2 is a greenhouse gas without which life on earth is not possible, but adding it to the atmosphere should lead to some warming. 3) Atmospheric levels of CO2 have been increasing since the end of the Little Ice Age in the 19th century. 4) Over this period (the past two centuries), the global mean temperature has increased slightly and erratically by about 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit or one degree Celsius; but only since the 1960’s have man’s greenhouse emissions been sufficient to play a role. 5) Given the complexity of climate, no confident prediction about future global mean temperature or its impact can be made. The IPCC acknowledged in its own 2007 report that “The long-term prediction of future climate states is not possible.” For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/climate-change-what-do-scientists-say

This 360 video shows how climate change is affecting the world’s reefs and oceans. Subscribe to TIME ►► http://po.st/SubscribeTIME Half of the world’s coral reefs have died in the last 30 years. New research in the journal Nature shows that even if people succeed in protecting reefs from pollution and overfishing, global warming remains a deadly threat. In The Crystal Reef, viewers meet marine scientist Dr. Fio Micheli and see the effects of climate change. With Micheli, viewers explore a rocky reef off the coast of Italy to learn about ocean acidification and the toll that human-produced carbon dioxide is taking on the reef. The Crystal Reef was produced by Cody Karutz. He worked with Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab (VHIL) to create the experience. The Crystal Reef is now offered on Blue Trot and LIFE VR. The climate-change experiment | The Economist

05:21
Climate-change experts are researching ways to cool down the planet using geoengineering. How could spraying chemicals into the stratosphere help counteract global warming? Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 What if you discovered a way to cool down the planet? Extreme weather events are becoming more common and more ferocious. As the surface temperature of earth continues to rise, so too will the ferocity of natural disasters. In 2018 scientists will take bold steps to explore a technology that could reverse the effects of climate-change. They’re looking at ways to reflect sunlight back into space and cool down the planet. Insurers say the number of weather-related disasters has quadrupled since 1970. While world leaders are debating and disputing climate-change and the ways in which humans alter their behaviour on earth, some scientists discuss changes to the earth itself. In 2018, they’ll take to the stratosphere to learn what it might take – or cost – to cool the planet directly. Geoengineering is the pioneering science that could well be on everyone’s lips in 2018. The team from Harvard University is the first in the world to test the effects solar geoengineering might have in the stratosphere. The experiments in 2018 won’t impact the climate, but if one day implemented, this controversial intervention could help curb extreme weather events. Solar geoengineering has the potential to save lives, but it also poses unknown risks. And there are fears that merely researching geoengineering might be detrimental to the long-term fight against climate-change. Some environmentalists say that the drive to reduce carbon dioxide emissions could be lost if there’s seen to be a quick fix. And deciding who controls a technology that affects everyone on the planet won’t be easy. Ultimately solar geoengineering could prove a risk not worth taking. But ignoring it now could be even more dangerous. Daily Watch: mind-stretching short films throughout the working week. Climate Change - Global Warming or Global Cooling? What Does the Data Show? Dr. Don Easterbrook

01:09:52
Climate Change - Global Warming or Global Cooling? What does the original data show? Dr. Don Easterbrook - Senate Work Session (2013) - Slightly condensed Dr. Don Easterbrook, Professor Emeritus of Geology at Western Washington University gives a presentation during an informal work session with the Energy, Environment & Telecommunications Committee, Washington State Senate. Dr. Easterbrook shows us data about what has happened with climate change in the past, and how we can expect climate to change in the future. He busts a number of myths that the mainstream media refuses to report on. He will also make the contention that the data the IPCC uses to predict climate change has been manipulated by NASA, NOAA, and other institutions. Don Easterbrook is Professor Emeritus of Geology at Western Washington University. Easterbrook was educated at the University of Washington, where he received the BSc in 1958, the MSc in 1959, and the PhD (Geology) in 1962. His doctoral dissertation was entitled Pleistocene Geology of the Northern Part of the Puget Lowland, Washington. Easterbrook has studied global climate change for five decades. He was chairman of the Geology Department at Western Washington University for 12 years. He is an active environmentalist, having initiated undergraduate and graduate programs in environmental geology at Western Washington University. As always, use this info to gather more info. F. WILLIAM ENGDAHL ~ "Gods Of Money & Climate Change Hoax" [Age Of Truth TV] [HD]

46:16
WHO ARE THE GODS OF MONEY? The NEW WORLD ORDER enslavement plan! THE CLIMATE CHANGE construct! The ruling elite´s succesful economic crisis & The Federal Reserve! Media manipulation lies! Vaccinations and chemical medicine that makes people sick! The 9/11 lie! Oil and energy = Rothchilds vs. Rockefellers! The political voting scam! Nikola Tesla and Free Energy! GMO food poison! The Bilderberg Group! etc... These controversial and eye-opening topics and more - discussed in this interview with award-winning American author, professor, historian, investigative reporter, geopolitical analyst, economic and conspiracy researcher: F. WILLIAM ENGDAHL. AGE OF TRUTH TV´s Lucas Alexander is interviewing F. William Engdahl is this straight forward hard-talk interview, filmed at the Open Mind Conference in Skanderborg, Denmark in September 2013. Biography of F. William Engdahl courtesy of: http://.www.williamengdahl.com: "F. William Engdahl has been researching and writing about the world political scene for more than thirty years. His various books on geopolitics—the interaction between international power politics, economics and geography—have been translated into 14 foreign languages from Chinese to French, from German to Japanese. His most recent works trace the strategies and events that led to the rise of the US as an international superpower. He describes the emergence after 1945 of an American power as a new kind of Empire not based upon sole military occupation of land, but control of vital resources. Domination was through creation of an informal empire where control of finance, of the basic food chain, of energy—above all of oil, would be the basis for what would become the greatest concentration of power in history, an American Sole Superpower after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Born in Minnesota, William Engdahl grew up in Texas. After earning a degree in politics from Princeton University, and graduate study in comparative economics at Stockholm University, he worked as an economist and investigative freelance journalist in New York and Europe. He has lectured on contemporary geopolitics as Visiting Professor at Beijing University of Chemical Technology and delivers talks and private seminars around the world on different aspects of economics and politics with focus on political risk. He has given talks at the Ministry of Science and Technology Conference on Alternative Energy, Beijing; London Centre for Energy Policy Studies of Hon. Sheikh Zaki Yamani; Turkish-Eurasian Business Council of Istanbul, Global Investors' Forum (GIF) Montreaux Switzerland; Bank Negara Indonesia; the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies; the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Croatian Chamber of Commerce and Economics. F. William Engdahl also contributes regularly to a number of international publications on economics and political affairs including Asia Times, FinancialSense.com, 321.gold.com, The Real News, RT.com OpEdge, RT TV, Asia Inc., GlobalResearch.com, Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun and Foresight magazine. He has been a frequent contributor to the New York Grant'sInvestor.com, European Banker and Business Banker International, Globus in Croatia, and has been interviewed on various geopolitical topics on numerous international TV and radio programs including USA Coast-to-Coast with George Noory, Al Jazeera, CCTV and Sina.com (China), Korea Broadcasting System (KBS), and Channel 1 Russian TV. William is a Research Associate of Michel Chossudovsky's Centre for Research on Globalization in Montreal, Canada and member of the editorial board of Eurasia magazine. He currently lives in Germany and in addition to writing and giving interviews on current events, consults as a political risk economist for various private organizations, major European banks and private investor groups. Why the "F." in F. William Engdahl? That's an interesting question." Age Of Truth TV Website: http://www.ageoftruth.tv Please Like and Subscribe to our channel. Your support is greatly appreciated! Climate Expert Jim Hansen explains the Climate Crisis (March 2017)

01:12:01
On March 8, 2017, Jim Hansen talked about the broad spectrum of global climate change, and how young people can take charge of their future. Hansen's blog http://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1 and his YT channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn3YhsvlaJ-UUsFyuhZA9Mw Dr. James Hansen, formerly Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, is an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, where he directs the Program on Climate Science, Awareness and Solutions. He was trained in physics and astronomy in the space science program of Dr. James Van Allen at the University of Iowa. His early research on the clouds of Venus helped identify their composition as sulfuric acid. Since the late 1970s, he has focused his research on Earth’s climate, especially human-made climate change. Dr. Hansen is best known for his testimony on climate change to congressional committees in the 1980s that helped raise broad awareness of the global warming issue. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1995 and was designated by Time Magazine in 2006 as one of the 100 most influential people on Earth. He has received numerous awards including the Carl-Gustaf Rossby and Roger Revelle Research Medals, the Sophie Prize and the Blue Planet Prize. Dr. Hansen is recognized for speaking truth to power, for identifying ineffectual policies as greenwash, and for outlining actions that the public must take to protect the future of young people and other life on our planet. Dr. Hansen's talk is the keynote address of Williams’ Confronting Climate Change year of inquiry. Throughout this academic year the college is hosting a series of speakers, events, and programming planned to shed light on the issue of climate change and how we should respond to it as individuals, as an institution, as a nation, and as a member of the global community. This event is sponsored by the President's Office, the Center for Environmental Studies, and the Geosciences Department. https://events.williams.edu/event/jim_hansen_climate_science_awareness_and_solutions Related YouTube channels: https://www.youtube.com/user/WilliamsCollege https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn3YhsvlaJ-UUsFyuhZA9Mw

A Fragile World (Climate Change). Full Documentary 2018

52:57
A Fragile World (Climate Change). Full Documentary 2018 ▶FULL DOCUMENTARIES | ▶ Spanish video: Our species is experiencing unstoppable growth and we are changing the climate of the planet. Every day, we are changing the world, adapting it to our needs, altering our natural parameters in such a way that even our biology, our animal essence, which, out of some kind of complex we stupidly ignore, is suffering the consequences. We are the only species which, instead of adapting to its surroundings, is capable of altering them in order to adapt them to our needs. And this, which has permitted growth and expansion never before experienced by any species, has turned us into the greatest threat for our planet. We are changing the world at a speed never before seen since the time it was created. What began as small alterations have turned into drastic changes on a worldwide scale, changes that are altering the landscape, extinguishing species, making entire ecosystems disappear and changing the composition and properties of our atmosphere. And the Earth is starting to show signs that it’s reaching the limit of its capacity to resist. Human population is constantly growing. There are millions of us all seeking food, shelter and benefits from the land and the water. The majority of human beings are poor and live in undeveloped countries, and so have no time to worry about the environmental problems deriving from their activity; that is a luxury they cannot allow themselves in the daily struggle for the survival of their families. The loss of the jungles has consequences beyond land biodiversity, affecting the very pillars of life on Earth. Because the jungle is responsible for the equatorial rains and their existence directly affects the water, the climate and the atmosphere of the earth. And, nonetheless, man stupidly and blindly continues to destroy his benefactor. We have all become dependent on constantly growing energy consumption. The problem arises from an uncompleted process. Because we have learnt to obtain and use energy, but we do not know what to do with the toxic waste generated by energy consumption. At first, we did not think this contamination was important, but the unstoppable increase in contaminating emissions is poisoning our world so much that its fabulous self-cleaning processes are unable to cope. Now, the contaminating gasses are changing the climate of the planet. And it is in places like Australia that we are starting to see the terrible repercussions this may have worldwide. The global warming of our atmosphere is a fact. Our climate is gradually heating up, the glaciers are retreating, the poles melting… We are causing a global change of magnitudes similar to those that marked the great extinctions of prehistory. And, paradoxically and sadly, we are in great measure doing so by burning fossil fuels, derived from oil, which are hidden beneath some of the last virgin refuges of unspoilt nature. We are altering ecosystems, changing landscapes, wiping out species at a speed 10,000 times greater than that required by nature to make new creatures appear. Man is the new vector of change, as meteorites and continental drift were in the past. And in this global process, we are all contributing to the change. 2018 Subscribe & More Videos: https://goo.gl/N3Lucw Thank for watching, Please Like Share And SUBSCRIBE!!! #massiveextinction, #climatechangedocumentary

TEDxObserver - Miguel Torres - Vintner, pioneer, climate change activist

14:40
The grapes of wrath -- wine in an age of climate change Head of Spain's oldest family-owned winery, Miguel Torres was recently hailed by Time magazine as one of the most influential global figures trying to figure out what happens to wine in a world of rising temperatures. After watching Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth Miguel became convinced that he needed to do something to raise awareness in his industry of the dangers of a warming world. Now his winery experiments with growing grapes at different temperatures to see how grapes and wine might be affected by climate change. He plans that his company -- the closest you get to wine royalty in Spain - will become carbon neutral in five years. He said, "I want to do whatever I can, in the interests of my children and grandchildren. I at least want to be able to say we did whatever we could." About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

"Science, Politics and Climate Change," Elizabeth Kolbert, The University of Kansas

01:17:26
Journalist Elizabeth Kolbert traveled from Alaska to Greenland and visited top scientists in her quest to find the truth about global warming. What she found were strong indications that the world was on the verge of a “climate regime . . . with which modern humans have had no prior experience.” Kolbert published her findings in Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change (2006). In her lecture, “Science, Politics, and Climate Change,” she will cut through the competing rhetoric and political agendas to elucidate climate change and asks what, if anything, can be done, and how we can save our planet. She will explain the science and the studies, unpack the politics, and present the personal tales of those who are being affected most. Kolbert has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1999. Her stories include political profiles, book reviews, comment pieces, and extensive writing on climate change. “The Climate of Man,” a three-part series that preceded Field Notes, won the American Association for the Advancement of Science Journalism Award and the National Academy of Sciences Communication Award. Field Notes was named one of the 100 Notable Books of 2006. Kolbert’s writing has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, and Mother Jones.
