In particular, it was found that the cross axis wind turbine integrated with a 45° deflector produced a power coefficient 2.8 times higher than the vertical axis wind turbine. The rotor rotational speed was increased by 70% with well-improved starting behaviour. Initial computational fluid dynamics analysis was done to illustrate the flow field of the deflected air stream by an omni-directional shroud. The simulation showed that the approaching air is deflected upwards by the guide-vane, which would interact with the horizontal blades and produce additional torque. The cross axis wind turbine is applicable in many locations, creating significant opportunities for wind energy devices and therefore reducing dependencies on fossil fuel.

• Wind power is the use of air flow through wind turbines to provide the mechanical power to turn electric generators. • Wind energy is electricity created from a wind turbine • Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power • A generator can convert mechanical power into electric • When the wind turns the blades, the blades turn a generator and create electricity Why Wind Energy? The project is environment friendly • Operation and Maintenance (O&M) costs are low • The cheapest source of electrical energy (on a levelled cost over 20 years) • A project with the fastest payback period • A permanent shield against ever increasing power prices. The cost per kwh reduces over a period of time as against rising cost for conventional power projects • Least equity participation required, as well as low cost debt is easily available to wind energy projects • A real fast track power project, with the lowest gestation period; and a modular concept • No marketing risks, as the product is electrical energy • A project with no investment in manpower

Altaeros - Airborne Wind Turbine Prototype 2012

The scale prototype harnessed strong winds up to 350 feet high to produce over twice the power of traditional wind turbines. The prototype was tested in Limestone Maine by Altaeros Energies, a wind energy company formed out of MIT. The Airborne Wind Turbine uses a helium-filled, inflatable shell to ascend to higher altitudes where winds are more consistent and over five times stronger than those reached by traditional tower-mounted turbines. The automated lifting technology is adapted from aerostats, industrial cousins of passenger blimps that for decades have lifted heavy communications and radar equipment into the air for long periods of time. Altaeros is developing its first product to reduce energy costs by up to 65 percent by displacing expensive fuel used to power diesel generators at remote industrial, military, and village sites.
