TOKYO — A Japanese engineer has designed a new type of wind turbine that he believes would be able to harness power from typhoons. Atsushi Shimizu founded a tech company called Challenergy in 2013 and invented a wind turbine that not only can draw power from the force of wind, but can stay functional during typhoons. The typhoon turbine consists of three vertical blades and a central rod. It has an omnidirectional axis so that it can respond to wind coming from every direction. Instead of driven by a propeller, the turbine makes use of the principle of the Magnus effect: air curves when passing by a rotating object, and the downward deflection of the air-flow produces a lifting force that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the object to remain airborne. The blades are controlled by the central rod, which can be tightened to slow down, or stop the blades regardless of the external forces. Under normal circumstances, the typhoon turbine can achieve about 30 percent efficiency while conventional wind turbine can achieve 40 percent, ScienceAlert reported. However, conventional wind turbines could be damaged by typhoons while the typhoon turbine would be able to function normally. "Japan actually has a lot more wind power than it does solar power, it's just not utilized," Shimizu told CNN. "Japan has the potential to be a super power of wind.” According to the Japan Guide, about seven or eight typhoons pass over Okinawa prefecture each year, with about three hitting its main islands. Shimizu believes a single typhoon could generate enough energy to power Japan for 50 years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. In unfavourable wind conditions, factors such as low wind speed, high turbulence, and constant wind direction change can reduce the power production of a horizontal axis wind turbine. Certain vertical axis wind turbine design principles perform well under these harsh operating conditions; but, these wind rotors typically have low power coefficients. To overcome the problems above, a novel cross axis wind turbine has been conceptualised to maximise wind energy generation. This is achieved via harnessing the wind energy from both the horizontal and vertical components of the oncoming wind. The cross axis wind turbine comprises three vertical blades and six horizontal blades arranged in a cross axis orientation. Initial testing using deflectors to guide the oncoming airflow upward showed that the cross axis wind turbine produced significant improvements in power output and rotational speed performance compared to a conventional straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine. In particular, it was found that the cross axis wind turbine integrated with a 45° deflector produced a power coefficient 2.8 times higher than the vertical axis wind turbine. The rotor rotational speed was increased by 70% with well-improved starting behaviour. Initial computational fluid dynamics analysis was done to illustrate the flow field of the deflected air stream by an omni-directional shroud. The simulation showed that the approaching air is deflected upwards by the guide-vane, which would interact with the horizontal blades and produce additional torque. The cross axis wind turbine is applicable in many locations, creating significant opportunities for wind energy devices and therefore reducing dependencies on fossil fuel.
Wind turbines operate on a simple principle. The energy in the wind turns two or three propeller-like blades around a rotor. The rotor is connected to the main shaft, which spins a generator to create electricity. So how do wind turbines make electricity? Simply stated, a wind turbine works the opposite of a fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind, like a fan, wind turbines use wind to make electricity. The wind turns the blades, which spin a shaft, which connects to a generator and makes electricity. View the wind turbine animation to see how a wind turbine works Wind is a form of solar energy and is a result of the uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun, the irregularities of the earth's surface, and the rotation of the earth. Wind flow patterns and speeds vary greatly across the United States and are modified by bodies of water, vegetation, and differences in terrain. Humans use this wind flow, or motion energy, for many purposes: sailing, flying a kite, and even generating electricity. The terms wind energy or wind power describe the process by which the wind is used to generate mechanical power or electricity. Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power. This mechanical power can be used for specific tasks (such as grinding grain or pumping water) or a generator can convert this mechanical power into electricity.

http://bit.ly/13vEGo4 - One of the greatest challenges to engineers is to build a wind-powered car. If you consider car run by wind power a car which can drive any direction either against the wind or with the wind or through its cross-wind component; indeed that would be remarkable and recently in an online think car run by wind power tank this issue came up and a writer from the UK, Laura asks;car run by wind power "How does the wind powered car work exactly?"car run by wind power How does a wind-powered car work, well you know that really depends on which version of the concept we are talking about and since there are several they all use different set of variations of principles. Generally a combination of Bernoulli Principle, car run by wind power aerodynamics, vortex airflows, wake turbulence, lift, sails, low air pressure exploits, lasers, gravity, sound thickening and molecular alignment of molecules of air, propellers and of course other alternative energies in a hybrid configuration such as solar, battery power, magnetic principles, fuel cell, electrolysis, moisture collection, etc. Different versions of the designs and different engineers approach the challenge differently. The goal is a self-powered car requiring "no fuel" if it uses a fuel it must collect it from the airflow. You can see why building a wind-powered car is so complex even though the over all idea is so simplistic. Consider this in 2006.

http://tinyurl.com/q9udk6g Innumerable of us include discovered previous windmills and understand they by some means offer you a provider in the direction of its operator due toward the wind. Consequently it is with some of the more recent propellers by yourself are looking at out upon the horizon. They far too are building wind electricity. Wind generators get the job done upon a basic strategy. The electrical energy in just the wind turns 2 or 3 propeller-such as blades near a rotor. The rotor is involved toward the principal shaft, which spins a generator in direction of crank out electrical power. Wind generators are preset upon a tower toward catch the optimum electric power. At 100 toes (30 meters) or additional over flooring, they can acquire ease of more quickly and considerably less turbulent wind. The blades of the wind turbine are formed in just these types of a course that wind triggers them towards rotate, which spins a small rate shaft with a products at the stop which is involved towards one more lesser equipment upon a significant tempo shaft that operates during a generator housing. The generator makes electrical energy applying substantially the exact same strategy as the alternator upon your automobile (dependent upon the turbine fashion). A magnetic rotor upon the substantial-pace shaft within the generator housing spins within loops of copper twine that are wound above an iron main. As the rotor spins over the within of the main it produces electromagnetic induction in the course of the coils that creates an electric powered existing. That latest is then controlled and fed into the grid (or a household grid talk course of action) at the time some amendment as a result that it can be utilised in just our houses or routed into a battery financial institution for storage. Where by a battery lender is employed, a regulator stops overcharging. In just the conclusion, if on your own contain a person wind turbine, by yourself can deliver ample electric power for your household. Services who individual quite a few wind generators retain the services of them towards Deliver electrical power in direction of plenty of Those people in just its grid. Wind generators for business electric power output standard wide variety versus 100 kilowatts in the direction of 5 megawatts. A wind turbine for residence employ the service of is made up of rotors concerning 8 and 25 ft inside of diameter and ordinarily consists of the upcoming toward produce involving a several hundred watts and 6 kilowatts of energy. Some wind generators can be made use of in just conjunction with a grid communicate process. For each individual kilowatt-hour of energy created by way of wind electrical power or other environmentally friendly signifies, practically 1.5 weight of carbon is averted towards likely into the natural environment if that electric power experienced been sourced in opposition to coal fired energy vegetation. Carbon dioxide is a primary contributor toward world wide warming caused weather variation. Hence how considerably wind is necessary toward purchase comprehensive hire of a wind turbine? A wind turbine often requirements wind speeds of in close proximity to 10 miles an hour (16kmh) toward commence manufacturing electrical power and highest wind pace for hefty generators is just about 30 miles for every hour; therefore using them isn't Quite an possibility if your self're uncovered inside of an Place the place winds are traditionally mild and issue. Some versions are previously remaining designed that can deliver electrical power with as minimal as 5 mile for every hour wind speeds - in particular the vertical axis fashion. Wind pace frequently raises with peak and in which there are no organic or person-designed obstacles. This is why yourself from time to time look at wind generators upon hilltops or within the centre of wheat fields. The blades of a wind turbine rotate at a price of involving 10 in direction of 50 revolutions for each moment. In just a circumstance exactly where wind speeds are extraordinary, for illustration if there's a gale, the turbine routinely shuts down towards avoid hurt. The lifespan of a impressive turbine is pegged at near 120,000 hrs or 20-25 several years. Inspite of what some may possibly believe that, wind generators aren't extremely noisy. Oneself will mainly listen the swoosh of the blades passing the tower. Of study course, if your self're residing conclude toward a high wind farm, it could possibly clearly show some sound difficulties; yet greatest international locations contain laws with regards to the place of wind farms within relation in direction of household elements. Generators utilized within household scenarios are substantially quieter than their wind farm counterparts, nevertheless your self'll need to have in the direction of examine with your community gove

http://www.altaeros.com - First public video of the 35-foot-wide Airborne Wind Turbine. The scale prototype harnessed strong winds up to 350 feet high to produce over twice the power of traditional wind turbines. The prototype was tested in Limestone Maine by Altaeros Energies, a wind energy company formed out of MIT. The Airborne Wind Turbine uses a helium-filled, inflatable shell to ascend to higher altitudes where winds are more consistent and over five times stronger than those reached by traditional tower-mounted turbines. The automated lifting technology is adapted from aerostats, industrial cousins of passenger blimps that for decades have lifted heavy communications and radar equipment into the air for long periods of time. Altaeros is developing its first product to reduce energy costs by up to 65 percent by displacing expensive fuel used to power diesel generators at remote industrial, military, and village sites.
